O.K., I am terrified of snakes. We have a storage unit attached to the back of our villa, where all my Halloween and Christmas decorations are. There is a little hole in the side which I figured was no big deal. So a few weeks ago while I was out cooking on the grill I noticed something coming out of it. Upon further inspection, I relized it was a shedded snack skin, which I am assuming the snake lost when he went in. The problem is, I don't know if it came out. The leasing office won't do anything but come and close the hole up, but I am terrified to open up the door. My imagination is just going crazy with what I might find. Any suggestion on what to do...who to call? TIA

This is the ONLY reason I'm afraid to move to Florida! LOL

As I was reading your post, hubby came in the door and I jumped....snakes creep me out, scare me and make me wanna cry! :o

I have zero suggestions for you and am feeling the need to back slowly out of this thread so I can go lay down for a bit to recover from my horror at your story!

ok, so I just don't have anything helpful to add anyway, sorry. LOL

Wish I could have been more help to ya....good luck with snakey!
*multiple shivers!!!*

I'm still laying down trying to recover. We have lived here a year and have had no reason to really go into the storage unit so now all of the sudden I need a bunch of stuff out of there. I was thinking of going camping in the Keys over Thanksgiving weekend....tents in the storage unit, I ain't going to get it to air it out. And it looks like I will buy new halloween and Christmas decorations this year.

HAHAHAHaaaaaaaaaaa yeah, I WAS gonna suggest buying ALL new stuff!!!

When my granddaughter and I were at WDW last spring, we were enjoying the nice weather at Epcot. Kate LOVES to pick up/collect small sticks and just as she was reaching down for one, it SLITHERED AWAY!!

HONEST TO GOODNESS, I THOUGHT I was gonna have heart failure right then and there.

Caught my breath and realized SHE thought the snake was really COOL.......

and she wanted GRAMMA to go CATCH it for her!!!
   (how many  can I have in a single post?)

*shiver* snakes. What was god thinking when she made the SNAKE???

You poor thing. I just don't have any decent suggestions for you. I'm sorry. LOL

I always picture Shep as our resident snake expert! :teeth:

I once had a snake in the garage. I went a got a neighbor...a big guy and former sheriff! He didn't even want to get it but did. ::yes::

My real active imagination tells me that i'm going to open a door and my storage unit is going to be turned into a jungle and the one snake multiplied into like 20. This is Florida, I know there are places that will come remove alligator maybe they will come check for snakes...going to let my fingers do the walking in the yellow pages:wave:

You might try pulling items out one by one with a long rake and have something handy to clobber anything that comes crawling out.

As for tenting in the Keys... what was it you didn't like about snakes?

I have to tell you that I have such a terrible phobia about snakes that I didn't even read your post. Sorry...nothing personal...but I truly have a phobia.

BUT...I didn't want you to think I was ignoring you, so I just opened this post and hit "post new reply" and posted this :)

I wish I didn't have such a phobia but I do.

I know your fear. Probably the biggest reason we are not living in FL right now. We were watching something the other night like one of those "Cops" shows and there was this family in FL. that had a snake crawl into their home, yes right thru the foundation, and slithered into a closet to hide. The cops didn't want o deal with it and they actually called a non profit organization that will come to your home and remove it. So very sorry but I did not write it down so I do not know who they are. If one can get into your home I'm sure your shed is not safe. Are you sure it went into the shed not just rubbed up against it? Not to doubt your words just hoping for your sake you got a bad look at the situation. BTW, on the show we watched it said that most encounters are from harmless ones. Try this link

I also found this place but the links would not work. Not sure if they are still in service but it might be worth a shot. They were listed as non-profit.

do you have any friends/neighbors/relatives that could help you out....

We came home two weeks ago and found a 3 1/2 foot black snake in our bedroom. Yes, I did say our bedroom, and it was wrapped around our light on the nightstand. Needless to say, when my DH exclaimed "OH MY GOD" and told me what the problem was, I wouldn't go anywhere near that room.
We are refinishing our bedroom and apparently the snake got into our basement, crawled up the wall and entered the bedroom through a crack between the dry wall and the window.
When my DH tried to remove the snake, he tried to escape back down the wall. DH is standing there fighting the thing (he had it squeezed in a pair of vice grips) and I swear it took a good 15 mintues before DH won that battle. He ran though the kitchen and threw the snake, vice grips and all out the back door. Our bedroom smelled horrible (I guess the snake gave off some type of odor because DH was injuring him) and we had to run the ceiling fan, spray lysol and light 2 candles to remove the smell.
Needless to say, I now enter each room of my house with just a little fear! :earseek: :earseek: :earseek: :earseek:
The only other time we had a creepy crawler in our house was a few years ago. I went down to the basement and had a load of laundry folded up on top of the dryer. Lifted up the laundry and there was a black snake under it. I was hoping after that episode, history would not repeat itself, but alas it did.
Just hoping the old saying "Third times a charm" does not come true!

You have GOT to be kidding me!!!!!

Please tell me you are kidding. Are you in the city? Are snakes common in your area? *checking under my desk as I type this*

Seriously reconsidering moving to Florida. LOL Sheesh!!!

Ginger, I'm sure there are people (young boys who LIKE snakes?) who would come and help you by going through your storage items one piece at a time.

*shiver* You poor thing. I don't envy you.

I was not kidding.
It was a really freaky experience. Just ask my DH! (As manly as he is, he was none too happy!)
I live in Delaware and our development is built along a small river, so that could be the reason for those nasty critters in this area. I am just hoping never to come in contact with one in my home again. If I do, I'm moving!!!!!!!

Throw some moth balls in the hole. It's supposed to detract snakes (if you have cats, cats hate the scent of them too).

Unfortunately, I don't think there are very many places in the world you can go to completely avoid snakes. We live less than 30 miles from New York City and we get a variety of snakes in our yard. They're usually common garter snakes and black snakes, but we sometimes get a copperhead. The black snakes are often 6 feet long or more. We've never had any in the house, though, which is a good thing since my wife can't even look at a picture of a snake without freaking. I don't have any particular fondness for them, either.

The mountains behind our town are known to have the biggest concentration of timber rattlesnakes and copperheads in the entire country, and that's with a great view of the NYC skyline.

We're planning to move to Florida in a few years and I'm hoping the snake situation there won't be any worse than here. Well, I can hope...

Didn't St.Patrick drive the snakes out of Ireland? I'm thinking about moving there after reading this post!!:earseek:

You might try calling your local animal control. If they won't come out, they can most likely recommend a company that deals with "critter control".

Yes Mermaid,
We have no snakes in Ireland (except in the zoo of course!)
Come on over!
Just one thing - it's expensive to live here!
