Anyone have experience booking their own flight to Cancun?

I was wondering what airlines fly into Cancun. Is there a good time to book Cancun flights for Presidents week (Feb 2004)? Does anyone have a tips on how to get a good rate for this type of flight? I am thinking that I could save money, but maybe not - perhaps I should just book a vacation package through an agency. What do you all think?

I flew Delta into Cancun. We had booked early (like almost a year)because one ticket was bought on Skymiles, after that the price fell two times and I have almost $400 in vouchers (which I need to book soon. To where I have no idea).

When I was researching my trip it appeared that booking a whole package was the way to go but because we wanted to fly out of our local airport and the free ticket it wasn't an option.
