on what settings to use for fireworks and nighttinme parades?

I have tried and I cannot seem to get the hang of this new camera for nightime events. Thanks!!! :)

I have a 510, which is identical to the 520 except for megapixels. There is fireworks setting. Look at the dial on top of the camera and select "SCN" for scene. Once you have selected that, use the right/left sides of the big round button on the back of the camera to choose the scene selection you want - eventually, you'll see one for fireworks. There's also a scene selection for night shots.

Thanks! I did that and it just did not work. Is it because i handheld it? I plan on getting a small tripod for next trip.

Anyone set it to manual? what settings? I used to know all about this stuff in college and now...

Jaysmom gave you the answer to your question. Canon provides on-line manual if you lost your manual http://alpha03u.c-wss.com/inc/ApplServlet?SV=WWUCA900

Your camera was designed with this special scene mode feature to allow you to shoot under eight engineered modes specific to the category type. This is a not magic mode, so you still need to stablize your camera by using a tripod or other non-vibrating platform, since this is an exisiting light situation. :wave2:
