everytime I open brown sugar, it gets hard! does not matter what I do to keep it fresh, it still gets hard!!

anyone out there with tips to keep it fresh? or is that just the way the cookie crumbles?

I heard you can pop it in the micro to soften it, but never tried it. Also, they sell this sort of little trra cotta thing that is supposed to keep it moist. haven't tried that either. :confused3 I usually just throw it out and run to the market for more.

Put it in a large Ziploc with a slice of bread.

Ziploc baggie in the fridge with a couple of slices of apple.

As soon as I bring it home from the store, I put it in the freezer. Then when I need it, it thaws in about 10 minutes. I don't know why this works, but it does.

The last time I bought brown sugar, it came in a bag that had a zip lock on it. That was probably a year ago, and it isn't hard yet. I buy dark brown sugar, if that makes any difference.

I store mine in a canister in a ziploc bag. Doesn't get hard. I also have seen people store it with a piece of bread in the canister.

I keep it in a Tupperware-type container in the pantry and it stays soft as long as I remember to seal the container tightly.

You can also use a tupperware container, and seal the top with saran wrap before putting the tupperware lid on.

I have mine in a glass jar with a slice of bread in there and sealed the top with saran wrap tightly before putting the lid on. Stays moist and I've had this batch since last year.

here in ocean city it's so humid. in the spring/summer brown sugar never gets hard here. you could leave it on the counter open for a month and it wouldn't get hard. that has to mean something or suggest a solution to the brains among us.
Salt however can become a lump.

The microwave to soften method works great, just don't overdo it...LOL...or it will melt............but I've done that and it does the trick.

Works for me too.

I've always just used plain white bread. It will turn hard as a rock. :)

I have a little terra cotta bear a friend bought me and it works great. I just drop it in the bag with the brown sugar and it always stays soft (used to have a terrible time with it getting hard all the time, I love that little bear! lol)

I haven't used real brown sugar for years but when I did, I put it in a ziplock bag along with a slice of bread. It works wonders. A slice of bread will soften up the hardest brown sugar.

I was tired of the rock-hard brown sugar too....then, I bought the genuine Tupperware. Now, I never have the problem.....always soft!
