Anyone have a Tivo?

I'm finally cutting the cable cord. But the hardest thing for me is getting rid of the DVR. I NEVER watch anything live!!

So, rather than a Roku or apple TV, I'm debating a TV for the bedroom so that I can continue to record those few shows I watch on "antenna" TV.

I see Roku's and Apple TV's mentioned a lot. Tivo looks like a $200 purchase and then $15/month, but that's still way less than the $180 I'm paying for cable. I have Netflix and Amazon prime which I can stream through the Tivo.

Anyone have one they love or hate?

We have a older Tivo on our kitchen TV, I like it and never had any issues with it but I mainly use it for streaming.

Look for used TiVo boxes with lifetime service on eBay and craigslist. You should be able to get the newer ones for around $300 and you won't have any monthly fees. I have four in the house right now, three at my parents house, and I've sold four or five in the past. The ones with lifetime service hold their value very well if you ever need to sell them.

Just an FYI you can't stream Amazon Prime on the TiVo. You can rent movies from Amazon instant but not prime. You'd have to use the Roku (or other compatable device) for that. I also agree to look for a lifetime box.

Tivo is a great product for recording shows. I'd say it's the best product for that. Boxes like Roku are as good (or better) for services such as Netflix or Amazon. I don't think tivo works with Amazon Prime videos.

Most of the newer tivo models are "cable only". Make sure the model you're looking at will record OTA.

I agree with the PP, A used tivo with lifetime service is probably your best bet.

We have an older TIVO and Apple TV. Really works out well.

I got a Tivo for that very reason. I bought an HD Tivo from ebay with Lifetime service for under $300 shipped.

My husband liked it so much he was constantly watching his car and sports shows.

I bought him one for his birthday last year for around $200 with Lifetime.

So, we now have two Tivos with Lifetime.

I LOVE them.....that was the one thing I missed about not having cable.

The four-tuner Premieres and six-tuner Roamios are cable only, but all others will work with an antenna.

I have the 4 Tuner Premiere, on our main TV and I love it. It has lifetime, as does an older 2 tuner Series 3 unit that my daughter uses in her room.

Series 1 and 2 Tivos do not record in High Def, so avoid those. (I have a Series 2 with Lifetime, that I do not even use).

I have cable, and I wish I could access the on demand features. But with no box, and just a cable card, I cannot.

The new tivo roamio can do over-the-air antenna in the base model only. We really like it. It can record four channels. We paid for lifetime service because our experience with tivo is that the hardware is made well. Our old tivo series 2 is still working fine. We were going to buy a tivo premier off of ebay but all the reviews said that the tivo premier has a slow interface but the tivo roamio had corrected the problem and was speedy.
