Anyone have a teenager with terrible PMS?

My daughter is having a terrible time, not so much physically, but emotionally. She is 17 years old, in good health, eats well, exercises, and sleeps well. She is a high achiever, and tends to be hard on herself anyway. 10-14 days before her period, she is an emotional wreck. I've read about Zoloft and other Rx that can be given, but I hate to go that route. Anyone have any experiences with natural remedies (vitamin supplements, etc.)? I would like to try this before anything else.

A woman I work with has a 17 year old daughter who gets terrible PMS symptoms. She's also been having anxiety issues, does a lot of hair twirling, always seems to be nervous about something but can't put her finger on what it it. They discussed it with her doctor and he did a blood test. It turns out she's extremely anemic. They just put her on iron to try to even out her blood levels. They don't know if this will help the PMS and anxiety but she'll have another blood test in a couple of months to see where she is. I would recommend discussing her symptoms with the pediatrician or an OB/GYN. Maybe there's something going on that can be easily addressed.

if its that bad, it might not be pms it might be pmdd. i know that the birth control yazmin is supposed to treat this. take her to an obgyn, and ask her if its possible she may be suffering from pmdd.

I've got those issues now. It's still physically bad with all the cramps and stuff. But now I feel like I'm bipolar or something in the week before it starts. I get so pissed off at Kari for no reason, we have fights over stupid stuff, I sleep it off and in the morning I'm fine again. And our cycles are fairly close together, so lots of raging hormones going on at the same time. But my mood during the whole month, I can pin point to when its about to start. First couple of weeks I'm fine, 4 days in the middle I'm like on this emotional high, then the week or so before I get depressed, angry, upset.

Is there any one else in the house with a period on a similar cycle?? I really do think it can play a part in how some one acts. In high school I was the only one at home with a period, so I didn't get these major mood swings. Now living with Kari, if we argue for a couple of days, then we both agree "it's about to start isn't it?" And move past the fights. Sometimes taking a midol helps too.. dunno why exactly, but it can.

Birth control pills can REALLY help even out the hormones. Really helped my daughter when she was that age.

My sdd suffers fromt this as well. Her mom and dad did not want to try the birth control since she was young, around 14. The dr did recommend behavior therapy. It took awhile because there is a maturity issue there as well. I can remember times when the 7th of the month would come around, we would scatter as soon as she came through the door. Her moods were like light switches, happy and sad or angry, crying at the littlest thing. We were at lose at what to do because we didn't know if what we said would be heard differently by her! So we all learned to be very careful and she learned over time to remove herself from certain situations, to clearly explain to us that she was not feeling well etc. And, I will add as she got older it got a lot easier. Even to this day I think she would have been an excellent candidate for the new YAZ. She was great during her cycle..it was the few weeks leading up to it. I think, not as a dr but as a mom, she would have benefited from having a bit of hormone therapy to get her through.

Birth Control pills have helped me alot with all that and with the Cysts I would get. Talk to her doctor or take her to a ob/gyn.
