My son collects out-of-control expensive sneakers (using money he earned himself.)

I would like to get him a pair for Christmas, but want to check on the validity of the site where he found them: repbeasts.com

They're located in China, and money has to be sent via moneygram, which of course makes me very suspicious. But everything I've been able to find onlne, like on youtube, is positive.

Anyone have any experience here???

I did a "whois" search and the initial registration date of that site is August 19, 2013. And it is in China.

I would be more than suspicious. And more than likely anything they sell is counterfeit or defective rejected merchandise from a manufacturer. And moneygram gives no recourse from fraud, especially international.

I wouldn't purchase anything like that from any website other than a nationally (USA) known retailer. They are almost definitely counterfeit and the fact that you have to send money via MoneyGram should send up a huge red flag!

DON'T DO IT!!!!!!!!!!

If you truly want to waste your money on them, find a reputable retailer here in the US to buy them from.

I've found that 15 year old boys are VERY trusting of websites, especially those offering 1/2 price footwear (sneakers and cleats). Ds15 learned the hard way. Most of the footwear is going to be full price - just pay it and hope his feet don't grow too fast.

OP, when I goggled that website then clicked the link, my McAfee site advisor bar went from green to yellow & the McAfee page came up saying, "Whoa, are you sure you want to go there? This page has been linked to suspicious activity." etc.

How exactly does a kid get into "out of control expensive sneakers" in the first place? Thank God my boys (16 & 13) aren't into that. I usually don't spend more than $60/pair for Nike, Vans, etc.

Hey Alice! I would say no to that website too.

My dh goes to China frequently for business. I printed out the Dooney Disney Bag and asked him to get it for me there. He said the hotel concierge said its not even Made in China. Its actually made in Taiwan and for export only.

A lot of the stuff in China is knock off. So I hope your ds finds a reputable place to get his kicks. Heah, sweet kicks are very important you know:)

Oh and belated happy cancerversary! Stop by the thread and say hi! Hope school is going well for you.

He works over the summer and earns his own money. He puts a third of what he makes into the bank. And he asks his parents whether he can spend the rest of his money on sneakers that cost close to $200 a pair. That puts them into the same financial ballpark as the UGGS a lot of his female classmates wear.

Would it be my choice? Absolutely not.... I'm more of a Payless shopper. But he's learning the value of a dollar and of working hard. Apparently he thinks that a pair of Air Jordan sneakers is worth the money and the time it cost him to earn that money-- he's in a group of kids who buy and sell these things among each other and at sneaker shows.

He got up every morning over the summer and was at work by 10 am. And I know where every dollar went-- I'm not concerned that he's into things he shouldn't be. Up until now, he's paid for each of those pairs of sneakers on his own.

If this is the one thing he's asking for at Christmastime, I'm going to try to see whether we can make it happen. And, knowing that, he thought he had come up with a way to save us money. I was just concerned-- and now I'm sure-- that it wasn't the best option.

But thanks for your help.

Thank, LMP. Hard to believe the nightmare was 5 years ago. But if it, and the recent loss of a good friend to cancer, taught me anything, it was that sometimes I have to throw caution to the wind and simply invest a little in happiness.

I really wasn't trying to be snarky & didn't meant to sound that way. We all have things that we're passionate about that maybe someone else would say isn't worth the $. I don't know why, just some things surprise me. It's all relative.
