Here's my review, taken directly out of my Jan 08 dining review (linked in my sig)
We checked out the poly a little bit, checked in early to the Kona and headed over to the bar to get some yummy drinks. My rum-loving pirate wannabe BF ordered the Lapu lapu and I wanted something light so I ordered the raspberry mojito.
They were expensive (thanks to the Lapu) coming to $21 something. My bf left $25. By the time we headed back to Kona and our buzzer went off. We were seated on the right wall in the upper corner. The din wasn't overpowering and we soon became used to it. Our drinks were good. My bf said if you like rum, you'd like the lapulapu. It was strong and he felt like it had a good deal of alcohol. One of our neighbors even asked how it was, and he replied about the rum, and soon we saw the drink being delivered to his table. The mojita was a delight. Light, slightly sweet, fizzy, with just the right amount of alcohol. I tried ordering one from the AC, but alas, they didn't have mint. Much to our delight the macedamic nut mahimahi was back on the menu!!!!!!! My dbf knew that's what he wanted. I was a little fished out, so my choice was between the shrimp (which I heard was only ok), the tuna (which I'm particularly fond of, but was intrigued), and the chicken. I decided on the latter. Our bread was delivered, which was yummy, a little too sweet for my tase. It was soft, slightly warm, and that butter tasted like nut frosting (um...that sounded dirty ) Our server brought us our drinks, and our table was full of water, soda, and alcohol-yum. I had heard so much hype about the sticky wings so we went ahead and ordered them.
Unfortunately, they looked better then they tasted. They were good, but the strong sauce was overpowering. The accompanying salad had a strong sesame oil flavor. I'm glad I tried them, but they were messy (duh sticky wings! ) Wet wipes would be a nice side.
Then the entrees:
This was dbf's favorite meal of the trip. He loves both macademia nuts and mahimahi. Mine over was good but overly sweet. The sauce on the chicken was overpowering compared to the already sweet coconut crust on the chicken. The salad was wonderful though. Perfectly ripe strawberries and pineapple--yum! Sadly we were too full by the time dessert was offered. We took the chocolate macademia tart and the chocolate fondue with us (I wanted the banana creme brulee, but felt the fruit and cookies would hold up better in our room.)
I ate the fruit the next morning--it was perfectly rippened. The chocolate sauce was still good. I ate a bite of the thin cookie and the macaroon. They were ok. It was soon too humid and the thin cookie became too sticky. DBF didn't eat his until a few days later. He said it was good, and tasted like it would have been great fresh.
Overall, I'd go there again, but I might try Ohana first. It was too sweet for my taste--but that's Hawaiian food for you.
Food: 4.5/5 (Since it was dbf's fav)
Service: 4/5
Atmosphere:4/5. It's too open and I could see how it would be too loud. But I liked our corner table and there was an arm rest.
Hope that's helpful
