Anyone have a recipe for orange spiced tea?

My DH and I love orange spiced tea. I have been buying the Lipton orange spice tea bags, they come in a box of 20 for around $2 at Walmart. I use half orange spice and half regular tea bags when I make a gallon of iced tea. But we go through ALOT of tea, so the 20 tea bags go fast.

I got to thinking there must be a way to just throw the orange and spices in the hot water when brewing the regular tea bags. I'm thinking this would be cheaper. Has anyone done this or have a recipe, that would be cheaper than buying the flavored bags?

I don't, but this sounds great! Can you drink it hot too? I don't like coffee and am always looking for a warm drink for winter.

How much water to tea do you use??

I am not home right now but I do have something at home that might work for you. I make it in the winter, it is great for sore throats and very soothing on a cold night. I have had it cold but usually don't have any in the summer and have never thought to mix up a batch. I used to make it for gifts, it was great with a gift mug for my son's teachers.
I use powdered ice tea, tang and some spices. I hope I can remember to get back on line when I am home to put the recipe on here.

I'm sure you could drink it hot. It's just a regular tea bag, but flavored. You would just use a flavored tea bag instead of a "plain" tea bag. I can't get the picture to post, but just google "Lipton Orange Spice Tea" and you'll see a box of it.

Anyone else have any ideas?

I was just going to post this one. Its been around since I was a kid, but we always called it Friendship Tea!

Ye4s, that's the recipe I use. I got a craving for it last night after posting and bought the stuff and am drinking it iced right now. YUM, it is good iced too. I always cut down on the cloves since I am not crazy about the taste but keep the cinnamon, that makes it so good.

My mother used to make this for me when I was a kid....wonderful memories. I'm so glad you posted it.

I love that stuff. We used to take it backpacking. It was wonderful on a cold rainy morning on top of a mountain. Took the chill right away.

We always called it "Friendship tea" too! Instead of lemon podwer tea mix we use the small pkg of lemon kool aid. It is really good hot, I have never had it cold but I bet it is great!!

I make this same Russian Tea every year for my Ladies Christmas Brunch. One year I served hot apple cider and several people "mentioned" that the cider was good but they missed the tea because they look forward to it all year. I got the hint I make sure I have plenty of Russian Tea on hand. I make a large batch and ladle it from a large pot now, because everyone wants a cup of "that tea" and I don't want to keep making individual cups of it!
Oh now I have a craving for it...thannnnkks :upsidedow

You could probably play around with mulling spices and add them (just a little!) while the hot tea is brewing. I think you could probably get a good result using dried orange rind while the tea is brewing as well. I don't know how cost effective this would be, though. You can see if you can find the ingredients and figure out if it is a better deal.

Thanks for all the replies! We drink it unsweetened, so if I use this recipe, I could leave out the sugar.

I'm looking for something that is more "brewed" with tea bags, than instant. I googled and found most recipes include cinnamon sticks and whole cloves in the water when brewing the tea bags, then pour in enough fresh orange juice to taste. OR boil some oranges and/or peel in the water with the spices and tea bags.

Think I'll just experiment and see how it turns out!

Going to get the ingredients for this today...........about the tea powder---is it sweetened or unsweetened? And, is it just that kind (I think it's Lipton) that's in a tall tube-like container??

and what is the difference between lemon tea powder and regular tea powder. I would rather not buy two canisters if I am going to make this. It sounds yummy.

I use iced tea mix for the tea powder. You could use either lemon flavored or regular and unsweetened or sweetened with sugar or nutrasweet. I think buying both lemon flavored and regular would be overkill, but that is just me.

Here's my recipie for "Spice Tea:"

1/2 tsp. cloves
1 tsp. cinnamon
1 c. sugar
2 c. Tang
1 c. instant iced tea mix

Mix all ingredients well--best after settled a bit. Add 2 tsp. to hot water and mix.

I also sometimes just brew a regular cup of tea and add about 1/2 a spoonful as a sweetener. I also omit the sugar and buy the sugar-free Tang and iced tea mix.

Now I need to add these ingredients to my grocery list!

My mom's recipe calls for regular iced-tea powder and then a packet (Kool-aid) lemonade mix. That might work better & cheaper for some people.

We use that same recipe too! Reminds me of my mom!! She would make it for us when we were sick and would call it just 'spice tea'.
