We really want to get a nice camera but I don't want to put out a huge amount of money right now. This camera is in the $400 range which seems reasonable, however, I would like to know someone has one and it takes nicer pictures than my Samsung digital.

Nikon D3100 is a great camera I use it everyday :-)

All of my photo's are taken using the D3100

Just a few, if you want more example message me and I'll give you a link to my facebook photo page.

I am not familiar with Sam241, but he/she is obviously a talented photographer. Do not expect to automatically get shots like those! Also, the D3000 and D3100 are very different cameras. If you are value sensitive, then you should look at Pentax or Sony. They always offer more bang for the buck than Canon or Nikon.

lol my bad I honestly thought it said D3100 not 3000, yeah I have no experience with the D3000.

Thanks - UKCATFAN, Can you suggest any specific models of Sony or Pentax?

Pentax K-r and possibly K-x (probably not available anymore)
Sony A390, A580, A33, A35

d3000 user here, here is a sample, now i admit i am not the best photographer, but these are all un-edited photos

for a entry level camera, i find it can take quite nice photos, it is easy to operate, i would caution you to get the vr lens (vibration reducing) lens or a tripod

I have a D3000 now (and a Samsung point and shoot too!) and I love it! Its a great starter DSLR! You can get some really good, fast lenses for it and it takes great pics.

Really simple answer - other than getting into much more advanced photography, where you really begin to push the boundaries of low light capabilities, focus speed, buffer size, continuous frame rates, etc - which probably 85% of all DSLR owners do not, then even the most entry-level DSLR will give you an excellent tool, capable of excellent photos, and a brilliant teaching platform with flexibility to shoot any type of photography. It's what makes a DSLR system stand out from a P&S camera.

So brand, model, even an older one from a few years ago, as long as it's not broken, will be a fine choice to get you started in photography and can work for years in pushing you to be a better photographer. And as you feel the desire to invest in the system, buy good lenses - the best lenses can be kept and carried over to newer, better camera bodies down the road, and still be fabulous, so you don't really lose anything on the investment.

UKcatfan had some good recommendations - look at all brands, and handle them all too if you can - the Nikon D3000 & 3100, the Canon T2 or if they're still around T1, the Sony A390, 33, and if you can still find them around A500 & 550, the Pentax KR, and if you can still find them around KX. All good DSLRs as starteer systems, some with little feature content perks, or slightly better sensors, and varying sizes and grip designs, that might make one of them just right for you.

Thanks for all the information. (I love the picture of the duck!) We just found a Nikon D3100 with the 18-55mm AF-S DX NIKKOR lens included - on sale for $546.99 - sounded too good to pass up. (My husband and I had been really into photography 30+ years ago - took courses in college when you had to develop film in the dark room) This feels like starting all over again - looking forward to learning how to take some beautiful pictures like you guys post.
