Anyone have a child with year round allergies? What meds do they take?

DD age 7 is going to the Dr. for yet another earache. This is the second one in less than a month.
She has terrible allergies and Im wondering if because she is constantly stuffed up, it is affecting her ear.
She has tried Claritin and another medication (think it started with a Z) and they didnt help. She recently took Phenclor and is still constantly stuffed.
She cant go anywhere without a tissue, her nose is constantly runny and she gets stomach upset from the constant drip. Should her Dr. be sending her to an allergist at this point?
Between her cough, ear and stomach she has missed so much school!

Your DD sounds like my son! He and I both have horrible allergies. (I took shots for 10 years.) He is practically allergic to everything, but especially dust, tree molds, and pollen.

He took allergy drops (orally) for over 6 years (hates needles) and they helped but after a certain point it kind of stalled. He then went on Zyrtec, which really helped, he was on that for 2 years but it did have a tendency to make him drowsy. He tried Claritin, but he can't swallow pills and that didn't work. He's 14.5 and at the end of the fall, he said, "Let me just try to go without medicine for a little while and see how it works out."

Well........ he missed one day in October for the beginning of a viral infection and so far that's it! (Usually he's up to 6-8 days of missed school.)

He also used Flonase (which might really help your DD). He only uses it when he feels it is needed.

I am not a child (36) but I also have year round allergies, and I have been taking Allegra for a few years now, and really like it. Only thing is, I am not sure if they make it in an application for kids, but might be worth asking.

DS (5YO) has springtime allergies and was on Zyrtec and it actually really hypers him up.

My DS 15 has year round allergies. He has tried sprays and pills that are perscription, but they all seemed to work for a while, then stop working. This went on for a couple of years. I can relate to missing school. He missed because of his allergies too, if you can't keep those passage ways clear then they are going to get infected and make them feel lousy.

I have him on an all natural remedy now and it seems to be working great! For 6 months he has been pill and perscription spray free!

He does spray his nose with Ocean...it's a saline spray morning and night (over the counter) and drinks 2, 32 ounces of a PH balanced all natural drink each day. It hasn't only helped his sinus's it's helped his energy and his complection is clear now too!

We have found that the best alternative is not to take medication all the time-both of My DS's have year round allergies and have taken Claritin or Claritin D long term-1 it stopped working and 2 the phsedoephedrine in the D gave one of them an irregular heartbeat. Now they use Rhynecort (nasal steriod) on an as needed basis and it works much better!!!

DS is year-round when we have a mild winter, like we have so far. He also went thru Claritin (there was a dissolving one for kids) and, something else. He's also had Nasacort, when needed and now, he's taking Allegra. First it was the twice-a-day but he's now taking the once-a-day, he's 15yo. Just this morning he woke up sneezing, sneezing, sneezing. Not sure the once-a-day really lasts 24 hrs. I guess he could try Zyrtec next.

And I thought I was the only one in this world with year round allergies! Well, WELCOME me to the club! I would suggest to your Dr. the idea of your DD going to an allergist. She may be allergic to something she's eating- stopping that would be a very easy cure. I have also sought treatment through homeopathic (natural med) and that worked wonders for me when I was working with her. It was the first time in 10 years that I didn't have to takle benedryl ( no wonder I'm sooooo tired now!) every day. I actually took nothing for over 2 years!

My ds, 7, is on 2t. Zyrtec daily. I think it helps
but lately, he seems to have a runny nose a lot.

As an adult with year-round allergies (2 years ago I was in the same boat with work as your DD is with school) I go for allergy shots. It's a pain to get started, but now I only go once a month. That is enough most of the year, but sometimes I use Zyrtec (as needed, not every day) and saline nasal spray (especially in the winter as we have no control over the heat in our apartment and it dries me out!)

Give her a big hug for me, I know how awful it feels!

My family has allergies. I took shots and now DS does. He was always a mess and had constant ear and sinus infections prior to this. He went to the allergist when he was 8 and it has made a big difference. The allergist has said the BEST medicine is the steriod nasal sprays, used daily(we use Rhinocort, but there are many others). Better than ANY antihistamine. You just have to use them consistently. We don't have to use them daily since being on the shots though. He does take Claritin some too. Get a referral!
Oh, another thing they recommend is flushing the nose out in the shower with a saline mixture and bulb syringe.
Many people often have "non-allergies". These are allergic responses to non-allergic things(smoke, perfumes, even heat and cold can trigger it! ). Your allergy test will show nothing, but you still have the symptoms of allergies. The nasal sprays will help these too! Many allergic people have these non allergies also.
