My 26 mo old son was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes last week so our life has been turned upside down as you can imagine. We had planned to go to WDW this summer or fall but now are thinking of waiting until next July (2005) when there is a conference there called "Friends for Life" for children who have diabetes and their families. The conference is held at the CSR just after the 4th of July. There is more info on it at http://www.childrenwithdiabetes.com.

Has anyone from here attended this conference? Any other experiences on taking trips to WDW with young children who have type 1? I'd probably prefer to go during a less busy time but this conference sounds too good to miss.

Thanks,
Carol

Hello! We have a son that was diagnosed when he was 10 months...He is now 5. We took our first trip to WDW when he was 2 1/2 and it worked fine. We never ran into any problems. We just kept the routine that we had set up at home while we were there.
The conference scheduled next July sounds great! I personally would love to attend sometime...What ever you decide to do - have a great time and enjoy WDW to it's fullest!!

Sincerely,

Shirree

Hi, I am a type I diabetic and am so sorry, it is devastating news to a parent. I was diagnosed at the age of 7. I have done everything and not once let my diabetes stand in the way. My parents were in a similiar situation when I was diagnosed. I was diagnosed in January and my parents had a trip planned for Disneyland in march. My mom was scared to take me that far away from my dr., but she wanted to teach me that I was still normal and so we went. I am now 25, a nursing student with plans to be a diabetic educator, no complications, with two healthy children. Last year, I thought my oldest may have diabetes, but it was a false alarm. So, I looked into the conference at CS also, it sounds great. I just wanted to say hi, and if you ever need to talk, ask a question, or want to say "why me" go ahead and e-mail me at nuts4wdw@graffiti.net

Thanks to all of you for your comments! Wouldn't it be great to meet some DIS'ers at the conference at WDW next summer? I figured that had to be a few of us on the boards that also had type I or have kids with it.

William is doing well - no major problems so far - it just gets very confusing sometimes.

Thanks again!
Carol

My DS 10 was diagnosed last October...Halloween week to be exact.... The first few months were a getting used to the routine...but we just roll with the punches and it is just part of our life....Don't really think too much about it....Not sure if everybody that has a kids with Diabetes feels this way but we just have taken it and stride and made it part of our lives....

We did take our son for a 2 week trip to WDW about 8 weeks later and it wasn't too bad...

I'm sure with a younger child the challenges might be a little different...I wish you well....If you have any questions feel free to PM or email me... kcdunlap@badshoe.com

I just mentioned the conference to DH he laughed and said you would want to spend your days at WDW at a conference....I think I might have to agree..:sunny: :sunny: :sunny:

Hey Zurgswife, if you want to, you can go to the conferance.

Me & Diabeties boy will be playing Who Wants to be a Millionaire - Play It!

We wrote about Connor's Diabeties in some of our Trip reports. They are indexed in this thread under the Delswife's Trip reports.

(If you haven't read Delswife do they are a riot and a good laugh goes a long way to making the 11:00pm shot easier to give.)

Best wishes, you will find the groove and deal with the diabeties just fine. Going to Disney World is always a good idea to help everyone escape some of the pressure of real life.

Hi Carol,

My precious son was diagnosed a year ago at age 4. We planned a trip just because he had diabetes. We felt like he (and us) had been through so much that he deserved it. And I think it's so important to show them they can still do anything anyone else does. I do know what you are going through - it's undescribable. I will pray for you - My son likes Psalms 144:1 as it reminds him of his fingerpricks!!

By the way, we went in the heat of summer and had a ball!! Good luck!!

Yeah! That is the attitude!

I love that you took your son to WDW after his diagnosis! I'd love to go this summer but don't know if we can swing doing that and going next year too cause I'd really like to hit that conference and stay afterwards for a week to do the parks.

I hope your son is doing VERY well! We've had a rough weekend as William had a cold and his levels were all over the place. :(

Good luck to us both!

Carol
