I am trying to talk my dh of getting a puppy in spring and think this would be a good type. I'm allergic to dogs and these seem to be good for alergies and we also have 2 kids ages 7 and 10. Thanks

My FH's aunt has one... she is a devil dog. Just the other day, she said that she was "this close" to getting rid of her. She is known to destroy the house by means of using both ends of her little self, if you catch my drift...

Also, a lady down the street from me has one. It used to live with the family in the house, that is until it displayed behaviors similar to those mentioned above... now it lives out on the heated porch.

Someone else I know used to have one. It was adopted out. Too much to handle.

Hello, I have a Yorkie - see pics below. The one on the right is from when she only 9 weeks old and the one where she is older is about 2 years old (which is most recent). She happens to be a large size Yorkie compared to the tiny Yorkies. She is absolutely a love. She loves to cuddle and sit on your lap. She does love to bark alot but I think she picked that up from our other dog that we have cuz that is what he does all the time. I have to say she has been excellent in the potty training aspect. Maybe, once every 3 months she may have an accident in the middle of the night but it is rare that she does. She tries to wake me up to let her out and sometimes I just don't hear her so I think that is when she has the accidents. ut I'm very lucky /c it doesn't happen often at all. If you have any questions just let me know and I would be more than happy to answer them :) Good luck in getting a puppy ;)

I hope so, because you'll have a better chance of getting a good match for your family if you go to a responsible breeder of a single breed, than if you find someone who's intentionally breeding mixed breeds.
Both Bichons and Yorkies are great dogs, but I think a Bichon would be better suited to a family with smaller children. Yorkies can be a little more high strung and seem to do better in adult homes or homes with older children.
Also the Bichon is a better choice for the allergy situation.

Bichons are great temperament-wise, but take it from me--they are NOT non-allergic dogs!

We got a Bichon puppy because the breeder said they were good for people with allergies. I was fine for about 6 weeks, and then had the most horrendous allergy and asthma attack. I ended up in very serious condition in the hospital for 5 days. I almost didn't make it. Since then, my allergies and asthma are worse than they have ever been. We ended up getting rid of the dog, but as my husband says "she was the gift that keeps on giving".

My allergist and pulmonologist both said there is NO such thing as an allergy-free dog. Do not listen to anyone who says there is.

My sister has a Bichon. She is a decently hypo-allergenic animal. She's cute, but dumb as a brick. I almost feel bad saying that, but it's true. Of course, my sister thinks that her dog is a genius  House training this dog took a very long time. She is also as lazy as the day is long, and she has to be forced to take a walk

We have a Yorkie named Roxie. She's a year and a half old is the cutest thing you ever saw and has a wonderful personality. She weighs about 2 lbs. Just looking at her makes me smile.

My next door neighbor has six (yes SIX) Yorkies & a Pekinese mix... they yap alot... get them out back with my three dogs & the neighborhood must hate us!!!

We have 2 Bichons, my 12yo DD is allergic and she tolerates them fine. It really depends on your level of allergy. They do have to be groomed about every 6wks. We've started doing ours every 4wks and it seems to work out better keeping their coats maintained.

They are very friendly dogs and pretty sturdy. I really enjoy them.

My coworker's husband is allergic to dogs so they had to get a dog that doesn't shed. The best dogs for people who are allergic to dogs are Schnauzers, Carin Terriers, and Poodles. I love Bichon's and I want one myself but its too much grooming responsibilities for me. Good luck in your search! :wave2:

We have a bichon named Buster. (if I knew how to post a picture I would) He is wonderful, smart and fun to be around. He is the best dog I have ever owned infact we are thinking of getting another one this spring. Ya they need groomed alot but so what its worth it.

Thanks for all the help. Some sounds good, some not so good. I'm not sure if this made me want one more or not. I am thinking of a Bichon Yorkie mix. There is a breeder about 3 hours away that breeds pure breeds and mixes of them, They seem like a reputable place. I want to know more about the potty training and temperment (with children) of these dogs.

Our Bichon, Ollie is a year old and is great with the kids- 5,7,9,11. He's very playful but knows when he's getting too rough. As long as we get him out at least every 5 or so hours, he does well in the potty training department. He has held it for 8 hours on many occasions, and of course makes it through the night without a problem.

He's a real love. My dd is very allergic to shedding animals and does great with Ollie.

If you have known dog allergies, you may want to try some trial runs w/ someone you know who has a "hypo-allergenic" dog. We have a pure-bred Shih Tzu, another on the hypo-allergenic list. I have severe cat allergies, but no dog allergies. Either way, I wouldn't risk the heart-break of getting the pet only to have to give it up.

We have a Yorkie Poo, and he is the best dog we have ever had. He absolutely adores our kids, and is a real family dog. He is very smart too!! We also have a friend who has really bad asthma and he is allergic to most dogs, however not with ours. He wants to get one himself!! He does not shed AT ALL!

not a great picture, but she is a sweetheart

We have three Bichons. Very sweet and very smart. Definitely good for folks with allergies (My son and I are allergic and have no problems with Bichons and we had huge problems when we had Labs).

I've had both types of dogs. I grew up having 2 Yorkies, and I currently have a 3 yr old Bichon. Both are great dogs. We got the Bichon because my son has allergies. He does great with the Bichon. She has the best temperment of any dog I know. My ds (6) can do anything to her and she just takes it. She's never even growled at the kids. She loves to play with them, and she is so loving. It does take patience to train them, but now she does great. She'll have an accident in the house if we're gone too long. We took her to "puppy school" and she still remembers everything she was taught. When she comes inside from playing in the snow, I have he sit on a rug and she stays there until I tell her she can leave. I think they are the cutest dogs...you can't get mad at them...they just give you that look! :goodvibes

Most replies seem to say this mix will be goo with kids and me for allergies. Thanks, now I just have to convince dh. Anyony potty trained a dog in snow? I'm wondering if it's any harder than in the summer. Also how often do they need to be trimmed, how expensive,a dn can I do it myself? Thanks
