I know that being Deaf isn't a disability, but I just wondered if anyone is going to Silent Weekend in Orlando and combining it with some Disney. I'll be at Kidani June 25, 26, then Silent Weekend, then Bonnet Creek until July 6. Going to see other signers at Disney!

Sorry as someone who is hearing impaired - who says it isn't a disability! It is in the uk and rightly so - sorry but I couldn't let this pass]

Not going this year but have been. You are going to have a great time. I combine Disney with every workshop I do in the CFL area. If you get a chance and Trix Bruce is there she is great. Also anything with Jose Granda.
BTW most deaf I know view deafness as a language difference and not a disability. The few deaf I know that view it as a disability grew up hearing and are late deafened.

That's interesting as yes I am in the latter category as I have Menieres!! Happy signing

The Deaf I know believe in Deaf Gain and don't view not having hearing as a loss. I understand why with Menieres you feel that way, though. However, those who are Deaf (part of a worldwide Deaf Culture) not deaf (aren't part of Deaf Culture) would take offense at it being called a disability. Anyone going to Silent Weekend is part of Deaf Culture, regardless of their hearing status. I really didn't want to offend them. (and, btw, "hearing impaired" is considered not PC in Deaf Culture as it talks about what they don't have rather than what they do. Deaf is the preferred term.)

Losing your hearing later in life would certainly be more challenging. The friends I have in that situation fall into 2 groups: those who learn sign and participate in Deaf Culture and those who don't. It seems that the support of the Deaf community has helped in that there is a whole network out there who don't hear, wouldn't change that, and are very happy. It's good to know you aren't alone, and there is another language with people ready to help you learn, but I know it's still hard missing hearing. Best of luck to you, Jacqui!

I think we will see other signers at Disney. I'm really looking forward to it, but I'm afraid I'll get there and my receptive skills will be rusty.

You have explained it very well. There is the hearing view of deafness and the Deaf view of deafness.
According to my Deaf friends I am Deaf but according to the hearing world I am hard of hearing. It was my decision to embrace the Deaf World when I found out I am losing my hearing. I didn't want the isolation I see in my FIL who is completely deaf and refused to learn sign language, gave up his law practice and all the organizations he used to enjoy and refuses help of any kind. I have suggested TTY and other technology for him but no go.
My husband is learning sign now. He is completely deaf in one ear now and faces deafness in the future.
