I realize this thread is way off base for here and I hope the moderators allow it. I wasn't sure where to post it, but here goes--

I discovered this board a few months ago and have gotten a wealth of information about Disney. This board is also so much fun to use! We're also planning a trip to Hawaii next summer and I wonder if a similar board exists for travellers to Hawaii. Or if there's something similar to Mousesavers, etc., for Hawaii. Thanks!

You can also check Epinions.com for people's reviews of hotels. Are you cruising there? If so, check out CruiseCritic.com. Even if you're not, if you go to the forums and click on Ports of Call and then Hawaii, you may still get some good ideas of what there is to do. Also check out Gohawaii.com, lots of good info and you can send off for free travel info. Like you, we couldn't find info "all in one spot", but by searching the net we got lots of great info. Are you on AOL? If so, go to the Travel Forum and there's lots of AOL members discussing Hawaii hotels and tour info. That's the only thing I miss about AOL !!

We were there on a cruise in May 2002, hope to go back to Maui sometime in the near future. It IS paradise!!

Been there, LOVED it, hope to go back!:D

Oahu and Kauai - 1993
Big Island - 2002
Maui - next time, but I don't know when.

K9pal is so right. It is truly paradise on earth!:sunny:

When I planned my trips in 1999 and 2000, I didn't find anything like the DIS board. Sure would have been great.
At that time, it was cheaper to go through a travel agent to get a package than to book it on my own. The last time we got a package through Blue Sky, where we picked a hotel from their list and then we picked how many nights we wanted. Airfare and rental car was included. After researching on the internet, I knew which hotels I wanted and I knew their prices, so I knew I was getting a good deal.
Two hotels my family loved, and would return to in a heartbeat, were the Kaanapali Beach Hotel on Maui and the Hilton Waikoloa Village on the big island, Hawaii. Both are deluxe and oceanfront.
The Kaanapal Beach Hotel had been voted the "most Hawaiian" hotel and had a very friendly staff (best I've ever seen). It is also located on one of the best beaches in the world (some list it as #1). Black Rock is nearby, and is toted as an excellent snorkeling area. It also had a kids passport program when we visitied, where my DS got gifts when we visited different locations at the resort. He ended up with a hat (still wears it!), water bottle, frisbee, sand pail, and fanny pack. Really nice items! They also had classes you could attend for free. The ones we attended were lei making (two different styles), a printing project where we painted leaves and flowers and pressed them onto fabric (take a T shirt-makes a great souvenir) and a grounds walk where they taught us about native plants and their ancient uses. This resort was built in the 70's, and they were renovating the rooms when we were last there. While not the prettiest resort, it's probably the one I've felt the most welcomed at!
The Hilton on Hawaii is a stunning resort! Some guidebooks refer to Disneyworld when they describe it. It's 62 acres include a saltwater lagoon you can swim, snorkle or paddleboat in. There are also canal boats and a tram that looks like WDW's monorail (but on the ground). There is a collection of asian art scattered throughout the complex, as well as wildlife displays (turtles, flamingos, and other exotic birds). It also has a couple of wonderful pools with slides. We also did a Dolphin Encounter there. While oceanfront, this resort does not have an ocean beach (rocky coastline), but the lagoon has a beach. The Hilton wasn't a very friendly feeling hotel, but it was the most beautiful hotel I've ever been to. Plus there was so much for our family to do (some water activities cost extra).
Sorry this is so long, but wanted to convey how great we thought these hotels were. Our first trip in 1983 wasn't as special as our last two, and the hotels had a lot to do with it!
Hope you have a great trip!

Thanks, everyone, for all the good info. To Earstou, I've been looking at the Waikoloa village on the big island as well. However, I came across some websites for B & B, cottages, etc. near the Volcano park. Do you have an opinion about them? They look like a unique experience, but I'm concerned about the temperature (I understand it can get quite cold there at night and most don't have heat), plus I understand fog can be a concern, especially returning at night. Also, I've read some disturbing things about crime in that area--burglaries, crack houses. I might prefer a "mainstream" type hotel with security and in-room safes. Any opinions? Thanks!

We stayed at Volcano House in the park for two nights during our last trip. It was really neat to wake up and see the crater right outside the hotel. But I thought the hotel was on the expensive side for what you got.
We had lunch in a small town right outside the park and that area seemed perfectly safe (as well as the park).
The park was very cold in the evening, especially up high by the hotel. I had a light jacket and was freezing! We spent one evening on the coast, waiting for sunset and lava glowing in the dark, where it wasn't nearly as cold but was still cool (pants and light jacket).
It is a very long drive to the park from the other tourist areas, which is why we spent two days in the park and five at the Hilton. On the previous trips, we always ended up making the drive back in the dark, along some isolated roads. We had a flat one trip, and that was one experience I didn't want to repeat!.
On my three trips, I've never encountered any "bad" areas, but I've barely covered much ground there! We have been warned by rental car agencies about leaving valuables in the car, especially when visiting remote beaches (like on Kauai).

We are leaving for Hawaii (Maui) in a week. I couldn't find too much info on it and wound up ordering some guide books from amazon and the library.

We got a REALLY good deal on priceline for a vacation package. Four adults, air, hotel (condo with kitchen and 2 bathrooms, it has good reviews) and car for 2,100. The airfare alone would come to almost that much. I am very pleased!!!

I am just hoping everything works out well.

One tip I got was to skip the first few attractions on the road trips and to hit them on the way back to beat the crowds.

Have fun on your trip!!!

Thanks for the info about Priceline. Actually, that price beats the airfares alone that I've been finding. We've already paid for our hotel and rent car ($748 for 6 nights ocean front room, compact rent car, $100 gift certificates per day for 6 days, this was a Marriott Rewards special), so we just need airfare. Many people are afraid to use Priceline for airfare because they are afraid they'll get very inconvenient schedules. Well, if you conveniently save money...So what is your air schedule like? I'll probably get up the nerve to use Priceline because I really think that will be my best bet.

My wife and I just returned in June in an Anniversary/last trip before second baby. We just stayed on the Oahu since my wife is pregnant she didn't want to change Islands. We stayed 7 nights at the Hyatt Regency Waikiki. We loved but its definitely an adult hotel next time we take our daughters we will stay at the Hilton Hawaiian Village again.

I would also like to know about Priceline vacations. My mother has informed me she is paying our whole family's way to Disney next summer so I am the planner for: 4 Adults. 1 teen, 1 child and an infant. Priceline vacations seems cheaper, but we are staying 10 days and need 2 rooms seems like that will be tough to do on priceline.

Hey, I found it! I'm the original poster who asked if anyone knew about a board similar to this one for Hawaii. Well, I found one. Its www.hawaii.com. They have a chat board similar to this one, but not as big. About 5000 members. Still, a lot of good info there. Thanks, everyone, for your tips. This board has me spoiled. I've learned so many budget tips that I've cut the cost of my next trip by 75%!!! However, now I expect to find similar bargains wherever I travel. Well, maybe I will!
