Anyone get a MBA?

I'm currently in Computer Information Systems, but I'm having a lot of trouble getting through the required programming classes. I seem to enjoy the required business courses than the computer courses because they seem more real. So I was considering an MBA. I already have a B.A. in English, so I think I need to take the GMAT too. I think I can do it, but for those who have survived an MBA, how is it? Would I be better off beating myself with a belt? :) What sort of job opportunities are out there?

Thanks!

I got mine in Marketing 17 years ago (BA in Economics/Sociology).

I can't say it was ever a requirement for advancement but it was always acknowledged as I moved up the ranks. I will say however, that I personally feel I learned more in grad school than anywhere else (probably because it was the first schooling of my own choice). The lessons I learned in problem solving and seeing the bigger picture etc. were invaluable.

It was hard though. While most of the courses were enjoyable (especially since I was now working and could relate), Quantative Methods of Analysis (Calc), Statistics & Operations Research formed their own Math Axis of Evil. And this was before Excel was popular.

The moral of the story is today I am the CIO of my company. I picked up on the Technology as I went along but it was my thorough understanding of business that has made me relate the technology to the practical business needs.

Yep, in about 2 weeks, I'll officially have mine. :)

Math Axis of Evil... I liked that!

I have a MFA - about as far away as you can get from an MBA. :)

I went for my masters immediately after undergrad, so it was a lot easier for me. So many of my friends are now in grad school, - difficult when you have to work full time and/or raise a family. Still, I think its worth it.

As a HR Recruiter, we require many positions carry a MBA -- I've noticed they are a dime a dozen lately. When I was starting out, a college diploma was all one needed (and not even that in many cases), now it seems as though employers are looking for people with advanced degrees.

Good luck, Barry!
