Anyone from Raleigh, NC area? Relocation help, please.

We moved to Fuquay Varina from Maryland about 5 years ago... we love it! I will never move back! I have a daughter in Wake county Public School... she goes year round, we love that and hae had NO problems with the schools.... Good luck!

I can't say much due to confidentiality issues, but I would avoid Wake County schools if I were you.

I don't live in Raleigh, but I went to school nearby so it was always a weekend trip for us... biggest city close to my undergrad university. It's definitely a fun place. I like Garner and Clayton, as well as Smithfield.

My sister has lived in Holly Springs, NC and has loved it and the schools! Some of the schools are on multi-track calendars, others are traditional school year. She thought they'd hate the multi-track but actually love it because they travel much more than they ever could and very often its 'off-season' rates when they travel.

We live in Holly Springs and LOVE it! It's close to the city but still has a reasonable amount of land versus Cary. Everything it seems is 10-15 minutes from us and it's growing rapidly. The land value and what you get for it is much better than Cary as well. It is VERY family oriented and has alot of great resources.
On a side note, my husband and I both work for the school system. It is a great system for the kids. The year round school is used to maximize the amount of students that can attend without having to build additional schools. (With current growth it is estimated that Wake will need 25 new schools in the next 5 years.) Reports are showing right now that year round schools have higher student performance than there counterparts. I wouldn't let the school board back biting sway you. It's a lot of political stuff and people making noise. Look at the schools in the area that your kids would be slated for and enjoy.

Edit: just saw you asked about Healthcare.... Holly Springs is opening a new hospital in the near future. It is currently under construction.

We will also be moving to Raleigh within a year. My mom lives there. Previous poster gave you a good idea on areas. Keep in mind if you are going to live in Cary and have pets that there is a 2 pet max.

The limit which only applied to dogs, was eliminated almost 10 years ago. There aren't any limits on the number of pets.

Is the job actually in southern Raleigh or south of Raleigh? The traffic here can be pretty bad, so it makes a difference. Cary, apex and holly springs are all good places to live with Cary being the most expensive, holly springs the least, but thats because cary is closer to more things, but they all boarder each other on the south west side of Raleigh. Schools in all 3 are good. The issue with the school board that is making news will be least likely to affect apex or holly springs since there's not a lot of bussing in that part of the county as it is, but it more affects north and east raleigh schools. If you have more specific questions feel free to pm. I moved here 10 years ago and never looked back!

We lived in Apex for three years and we loved it. It has been a while since we have been there but I have heard that it has really grown since we left about 9 years ago.

I really, really liked the Cary area too. I was not to crazy about Holly Springs, but I am sure that there is more there now than when we were there.

My Dh's job was in Durham, but when we looked at all of the possible areas, we decided that being in the Apex/Cary area would be the best place for our family.

Well, my dh got his job offer and he accepted it.

The kids had a four day weekend from school so we headed down to check it out! We just got back last night. I am exhausted!

We really liked Fuquay-Varina and Clayton. We checked out a house in the Riverwood community in Clayton and we thought that whole set up was great!

We found a great house in Fuquay Varina, but I am concerned because it is in Wake county. Anyone know how those schools are?

Thanks!

I missed a turn in Clayton last week taking my ds to a doctor there and ended up in the Riverwood community and really liked how unique the houses looked there.

My kids aren't in the Fuquay school district because of where we live, but our town is right next door so most of their friends from Cub Scouts are in that district. From what I've heard they are pleased with it. It's my understanding that it's not involved in alot of the mess with Wake county district, I think that's more Raleigh, because Fuquay only has one middle school, one high school and I think 3 elementary schools (I may be off there) so they don't have the bussing issues that seems to be part of the Raleigh problem.

Fuquay high schools have a reputation for having a fairly large drug issue. That along with the Wake school issues, I wouldn't buy there. We are in Clayton and love it and have been so, so happy with the schools here. You can't go wrong with Riverwood!! Welcome!

I have lived my whole life in NC and I prefer the Rolesville/Wake Forest area. From Rolesville you are not far from the 540 loop but the area is really peaceful and has the small town edge. You are only 10 minutes from Raleigh, so all major shopping can be gotten to easily. I could honestly care less for the Garner and Cary areas. I drove out to Garner a lot a few years ago while I was attending Wake tech and the traffic is horrible!! Cary doesn't have any charm to me, so I don't go out there unless I have to. These are just my personal opinions though :-) I grew up in Zebulon, It's a nice small town, but I don't hear a lot of good about the school system now. They would attend the same high school with Wendell. A lot of people are using East Wake Academy charter school in those areas. Knightdale is an okay town, and they do have a descent shopping area now. I live in Franklin county so I avoid all the school issues that Wake County faces. I think the commute from here may be a little more than you would want though. Check out Granite Fall subdivision in Rolesville, it may be worth your while. We have gone to a couple of swim parties at their club house there and I was very impressed.http://www.granitefallscommunities.com/index.shtml

Just my 2 cents on all this of course. Good luck!

Oh my. Cary has no charm and Knightdale is okay. :confused3

I know, it is just an opinion.:)

Wake county schools are having A LOT of problems right now. My Dad and his wife are moving out of the area so that way their two daughters can attend schools in a different district.

There has been a lot of news online as of late that you should be able to find easily :)

Good luck!

Out of curiosity, are they moving out of Wake altogether or just a certain school district within Wake County?

My neighbors sold their house last year because the area we live in bussed the kids to a school that wasn't so good. They moved about 5 miles away to an area that for some reason did not bus the kids. Both in Wake County.

I agree it is a mess. But it is such a political hot button I don't see it ending peacefully.

My In-Laws live in Fuquay and their daughter goes to the year round elementary school in Holly Springs I think. I don't know what determines if you go to school there or the elementary in Fuquay but they have been happy with that school.

my husband was looking at the fire dept in holly springs and other local areas to possibly transfer to new job, and i LOVED LOVED LOVED the holly springs area. i also loved the park they had there that showed movies in the summer. you could maybe google the area and find some info on it. i hope you find what is best for you and your family!!!
