The climate? Hot and sticky summers. You'll be close to Montgomery for major shopping, events or the airport. Montgomery is growing right now. You'll also be close to Victoryland Greyhound racing, if that's important to you. The cost of living should be pretty reasonable. I think it's lower than than average.
Orlando is a little over 400 miles away. It will probably be a 6-7 hour drive...depending on speed limits. During football season, you'll see LOTS of people flocking in for games. They come in RV's, tents, everything. They take their college football seriously in Alabama.
There is the outlet shopping mall there. It's a bit older though. Most of the areas around there are a bit rural. You'll definitely be in the Heart of Dixie and that will be reflected in the area and the locals.
