I might be relocating. Can you tell me about the Roswell area? Any areas that are safer to live in than others within driving distance to Roswell? :) ANy advice or anything about the area you could offer would really be appreciated! I am from New England, so this would be a big change for me!

I lived in Roswell and Alpharetta for several years. Personally, I would recommend looking into north Alpharetta, in Forsyth County. Fulton County taxes are rather high. You could even check out east Cobb County, just to the west of Roswell.

But there are plenty of nice places in Roswell and Alpharetta, and East Cobb, etc.

I live in Johns Creek. It's a new city and we are in North Fulton County. We pay much higher taxes than in Forsyth, but our schools systems are some of the best in the state so if you have school aged children or are going to look into the public school districts I would consider Fulton County schools over Forsyth.

Roswell is nice. Alpharetta and Johns Creek are also good and shouldn't be too far depending on where your office is.

I have lived in the Atlanta area for 15 years now. We love it. There are many of us transplants and in this area it's actually hard to find a native Atlantan.

You need to hurry up about reforming Milton County! Break away from those ridiculous taxes and policies of Fulton County!

But congrats about the new city of Johns Creek. I've got plenty of friends there. And Sandy Springs. And isn't there a new city of Milton in north west Fulton now, or are they still working on that?

We would love our own county. It won't happen this year though.

I haven't heard of another city yet, so it's probably still in the works.

I am thinking my best bet might be a 6 month lease until I get the "feel" of the area/ :)Thank you for all of your advice, I have an interview at the end of July, wish me luck!!!

Roswell is a wonderful community. There is a sliver of Roswell that is actually in Cobb County so the taxes would be lower. The schools are excellent.

I live in east Cobb county, just next door to Roswell. It's a very safe area with great schools. Roswell itself is nice as well. My biggest piece of advice would be to try to live as close as you can to where you will work in order to minimize your commute--traffic down here is ridiculous!

When I first moved to Atlanta, I chose Alpharetta but just like others have said, the property taxes and registration, etc. are a lot more expensive. Okay area, but worth it? Not in my opinion. Roswell is nice but you really have to be careful where in Roswell you do live as there are some "bad sides" which shocked me. But, again you have the high taxes which to be honest are probably going to be a bargain for you. We now live in Cobb County - Acworth and our city was voted All-America City for this year. The school system is great, the city is very safe (almost too safe - you have a burned out headlight and I guarantee it could have just happened and you will be getting pulled over!), lots of outdoor trails and the lakes to enjoy, taxes are reasonable and it is very family friendly. I think depending on where you have to go in Roswell, the drive could be a half an hour to an hour. But, before deciding where to live, test out the commute. Our traffic in Atlanta is horrible and a deal may not end up being that way after spending a few hours in your car each day! :( I have a 30 mile commute to the Perimeter area of Atlanta and without traffic it is easily 30 minutes but on an average traffic day it is at least an hour to an hour and half. The record so far for my commute was four hours! :scared1: I would honestly try out the commutes first traveling from neighborhoods you may be interested in, and then decide on other factors like cost of living in the city/county, school system etc. after that. What fun is living in the best area if you spend more time in your car than enjoying your community? I wish I could ride my bike everywhere...so we are looking at moving closer to the city.

I live in East Cobb County, about 5 miles or less from Roswell. I would agree with you, the schools here are very good, the healthcare is excellent, services are excellent, standard of living is excellent. Interstate 75 cuts Cobb County in half, on the diagonal. Everything above I-75 is pretty much East Cobb. Everything below I-75 is either South Cobb or West Cobb. Having lived and worked in both ends of the county, I would choose East or North Cobb. South Cobb has always been in transition since I moved here in 1981. The better schools are in the north and east Cobb county. Home prices are also higher in the north and east, but those homes seem to hold their values better.

Cobb County is a very nice place to raise a family. It is traditional and conservative, but not provincial. You will have neighbors from all over the country and around the world. My own neighborhood looks like a little United Nations. We have people here who came from Mexico, Chile, Russia, Nigeria, and Korea, as well as good old Americans. Almost everyone in Cobb County is from somewhere else. They call us Tree Huggers, because we get transferred in with our new jobs, love it so much we grab on to a tree and never let go!

That's exactly what we did when we moved here. We knew the general area we wanted to be in and got an apt with a 6month lease so we could try it out. At that time DH worked in Marietta so we lived in Marietta. Later we found a house in East Cobb.

Eventually DH had his office moved out to Alpharetta, which was about a 45-60 minute commute each way. Here in the metro area, we don't say how many miles to work. It's not "12 miles", its "45 minutes." Commuting is the big hassle of life around here. Everyone has at least some commute. I work in downtown Marietta, about 5 miles from my house, but it's a 25 minute commute. Just depends on traffic flow in your area.

I would suggest that you get an apt reasonably close to where you work. Then you can scope out the traffic patterns and ultimately decide if you want ot move farther out, north, west, east or whatever. You will have to decide how long a commute you can live with. I have worked with people who commuted 90 minutes each way and thought nothing of it. Me? 30 minutes is about my limit, so it was a little bit of a trick to find something that suited me within that time-frame.

Good luck with your interview. I think you will love Georgia. It's quite temperate here, meaning that we have 4 distinct seasons. We don't usually have too bad a winter(this past winter excepting) and summers are warm and humid, but not usually awful. Everyone has A/C and we're not afraid to use it. My last winter coat lasted me for 15 years because I only wore it about 14 days of each year. Otherwise a good jacket will do.

Welcome to the Deep South!:cool1:
