Looks like some job opportunities are opening up for my DH there. Would be an interstate move for us. Never been. Wondering what all you could tell me about it.

Would be interested in school info too...

TIA!!!

I'm not too far. I'm in Alpharetta, which is in Fulton County, but also a northern suburb. Let me know if I can answer any questions for you. :)

I'm in Marietta. We moved here from up North almost 5 years ago and love it!

We like that Atlanta is so close, but you can also get away from the craziness of the city very easily.

Marietta is in Cobb County. There are Cobb County schools and City of Marietta schools. Our DD is in 2nd grade at a Cobb Co school and we like the schools. There are definitely some schools that are better than others, but we've been happy with ours.

Let me know if you have any specific questions you'd like answered. I won't say that I know everything, but I can try to help.

PS--It's also very nice to only be about 7 hours or so from WDW....it's makes getting the DH to vacation there yearly a lot easier. :rotfl2:

We moved to Smyrna (neighbors Marietta) about 18 months ago and love it. East Cobb in Marietta have the best schools in the county, but we are pretty happy where we are in Smyrna (less costly houses). Its a great area because it still has that close community/small town feel, but we are 20 minutes from downtown Atlanta.
Good luck and feel free to PM me if you have any questions.

I live in East Cobb which consist of marietta and Roswell.

Here are a few school districts:
Tritt Elementary, Hightower Middle, Pope High (we live in this one )
Sope Creek Elementary, Dickerson Middle and Walton High
There are a lot of great schools around here. The reason I chose Tritt as an elementary instead of the others. ( They are all great schools ) is beecause a lot of the elemtary schools split and go to different middle schools and then split again and go to different High Schools. Tritt does not split. All of the kids attend the same middle and high school. Some Elementary shools to consider...Elementary: Tritt, Sope Creek, Shallowford Falls, Mt. Bethel, East Side and Murdock
Middle: Dickerson and Hightower
High Schools : Pope and Walton

If you have any questions feel free to ask.

I'm not in Marietta but in Paulding County which is to the left of Cobb County (Marietta). I just wanted to say hi! :wave2:

Hi everyone! OP here, thanks for all the replies and offers for help! I really appreciate it.

Looks like SIL is getting a job there, and likely my DH will be getting one there too. As things become more concrete, I'll probably have more questions. Everything I read and from your replies, it sounds like a really nice place...

I lived in Marietta about 3 years ago and now live in the city of Atlanta - one thing besides what every one else has said is that the taxes are much lower in Cobb county! We live just (and I mean just) over the county line from Cobb County and you will have to pay city + county taxes if you were to choose that route versus directly in Cobb county.
Another thing is that even though he is getting a job in Marietta, that doesn't mean you have to live directly in Marietta. I don't know what your budget would be, but some Marietta addresses and areas can be a bit pricey for homes. However, my husband and I have considered moving to one of those areas because of the school districts. You can very easily live in Smyrna and some Atlanta addresses and still be pretty close to Marietta.

We aren't going to be buying. We are renting all the way. But I thank you for the info on the taxes. We might eventually be interested in buying, but after our last few experiences, we are more than thrilled to rent.

DH is currently commuting 60+ each way and has been for 2 years. We are SO looking to reduce his commute as much as possible, though I understand what you are saying about distances.

The area we like of Marietta (from info about schools) is more east than west, but I think that he would be more on the west side. Not sure. I'm pretty sure he would be just north of the base.

Not sure what other communities we would be looking at. Schools are the most important consideration...well, we have to be to afford it too! LOL.

We actually weren't too far from the base. We were right off Cobb pkwy. If you are looking at apartment complexes, there are plenty of those around to rent from, but you may have to look a little further (i'm only talking a few miles here) to rent a house. You would also probably want to look off of South Cobb road for renting as well. It is not far from the base. You really have many major roads that are right around the base that you can look at renting. You can PM me if you would like any more information.

We weren't looking at apt complexes. We were looking at houses. There are several in the area. Because of schools, we had zoned in on the attendance zones for Timber Ridge and Mount Bethel and a few others all in that area that appear to be similar to the school DS currently attends.

Thank you for being so helpful. And I appreciate your offer for more help. I'll be taking you up on that when we are ready to deal with more specifics.

Anyone have a son that plays soccer? Can anyone tell me anything about the different clubs/academies in the area?

Timber Ridge is a great school. I dont know about what size of house that you are looking for, but there are a couple around here for rent 2000 sq ft 3 bdr for $1500 and a 4 bedroom 3,800 sq ft home for $2,400. My house just sold and we thought we were going to rent until we found a house that we liked. So, I know what is currently out there. These homes are in the Tritt, Hightower, Pope district. what I can tell you about our elemntary is that we meet and exceed the states requirments. We also have a foundation run by and funded by the parents that pays for things not covered by the state. We have a computer lab, science lab and all of our classrooms have a smart board.

As far as soccer goes, I'm sorry. But if you want to know anything about baseball, basketball and lacrosse then I'm your girl.

We live on the northeast side (kind of) of Marietta. We aren't too far from Roswell and Woodstock. I work in west Cobb and the drive isn't too bad. It usually takes me 15-20 minutes to get across on regular streets.

Good luck! When we moved from Chicago, we had about 3 weeks to find a place to live and move due to my husband's job. It was nuts! But I'd do it all again because I love it here.
