We live eighteen miles from Monroe. It is the nearest small city to us. What would you like to know?
The daily newspaper is called The News Star. The website is
www.thenewsstar.com You might get some ideas from that.
The University of Louisiana at Monroe is located in the city on Bayou Desiard. There is also a new community collage that will be building a new facility in the near future. Also Louisiana Tech University is located at Ruston, just 35 miles away on I-20.
There are four major hospitals in the area. one mall - fairly small but we did finally get an Old Navy, a seventeen screen movie theater located in Monroe's sister city of West Monroe across the Ouachita River, a small zoo, a small community theater group, various churches, not a lot of industry and schools that could use improvement.
Personally, I would not recommend moving to this area. State Farm Insurance moved its offices from this area last year and really hurt the economy. Also, while people are polite, they tend to stick to their own group of friends and not take strangers into their lives easily. The schools are not great, there is not a lot of entertainment unless you are a big hunter or fisherman, and not many things for young people to do.
The main problem with this area is the attitude of the people. It is hard for me to put into words but it just seems like so many people are just existing until it is time for them to die. If I could talk DH into moving I would be packed and out of here is a weeks time. Family is the only good reason to stay here.
