My DFIL has asked DH to sell his 1950's pickup truck. DFIL is in poor health and wants this squared away so DMIL doesn't have to deal with it. Has anyone ever done this before? I know there are auctions, ads in the newspaper, Craigslist, ads in Auto Trader, etc. I'm just not sure the best way to get started. Has anyone every done this and if so have any words of wisdom for me?

I've sold several 60's muscle cars using craigslist and ebay as well.

With craiglist you have to pre-interview them about are they able to pay, how they will pay (cash, certified check, wire transfer etc...). If you don't every person in town will want to waste your time taking a look at the truck with no intention whatsoever of buying it.

good to know, thanks!

We sold a 1941 Chevy thru Craigslist a few week ago, it was quick and easy and did not cost anything. I would post a lot of pictures.

I recommend doing some research online and see what other identical trucks sold for or are being sold for.
(Not just in your area, but I would check other states as well. More and more older cars are being bought and restored for car shows. Lots of buyers are looking for what's for sale in surrounding states.)

Be warned you may have a few people calling acting interested then show up offering you a few hundred dollars telling you that it is all its worth ( and they are hopeing you don't know what its worth.)

Good luck

Does it run? My dad bought one of his antiques at a car show. One of the local cruise nights.

He also bought two on e-bay. He had both shipped to him from across the country. Be prepared if selling on e-bay the fees are high!

He bought several thru craigslist as but except for the one he bought from CA and had shipped here these tended to be junkers that he bought as parts cars. These also tended to be the newer cars - 70's era. The other cars were 1940 and older.

I'm actually looking for an early 50's Chevy truck. I just looked at both eBay and Craigslist. There is a wide range in prices, depending on condition.

If it's collectible at all, there are specialty advertisers that may be worth looking into. My dad is a car collector and restorer and he used to get Hemmings Motor News for years and years (till he discovered the internet, LOL). He has bought and sold some on Auto Trader. He's bought from Craigslist, but I don't know that he'd sell there, since the vehicles he's usually looking to sell are already restored and collectible.

Yes, it runs. We were thinking about local car shows, I wasn't sure if it was worth it. It's in good shape, restored, runs, everything.

I was thinking about Craigslist, but was a little nervous about it. I've only sold small stuff on there. I'll have a look at it.

It looks good and is correct, but DH thinks it isn't "numbers matching". We have looked into Hemmings.
