Anyone ever use Gentle Leader collars?

We have a Westie who thinks he's a rottweiler, he thinks he's big and bad and has no manners. He tends to drag us all over the place. So I got a Gentle Leader collar and he's a different dog. I can actually go for a walk without him pulling me.

Hmmm. This might be something we could use at our house. How does it work?

Never used one myself, but when I had both my dogs in obedience classes, the trainers were HOT on them and even demonstrated them a few times. They are great for very rambunctuous dogs (like labs) and seem to work quite well.

Here's the website - http://www.gentleleader.com/

We haven't been able to walk Mickey out of the yard because he drives us crazy. He leans his whole body into the collar and pulls the whole way every time we've tried to take him for a walk and we always get disgusted and bring him back home before we've gone very far.

But the Gentle Leader is working great. I just took Mickey for a mile long walk, and he wasn't dragging me. Plus, we went by the horse farm for the first time and he didn't go crazy when he saw the horses. He got hyper and barked a couple times, but after I corrected him a couple times, he settled right down. A whole mile walk for Mickey and my arm isn't tired. :teeth:

The Gentle Leader has a collar with a loop that goes around the nose. High up around the nose, just under the eyes. It doesn't prevent the dog from opening his mouth, eating or drinking, but the leash is hooked to the nose loop and if the dog pulls, it pulls his mouth closed. Then they stop pulling. Walking down the road on our way home today, Mickey stayed right at my side and didn't pull. You would have thought he had been trained to heel. :)

My dog doesn't like hers. She gets so humiliated (okay, that's just the way she looks!) and keeps trying to get it off! We finally bought a regular harness type thing for walks. She doesn't do as well with that, but it's still better than a regular leash. Honestly, she hated her gentle leader (even though it worked great!). For a while I carried it in my pocket and whenever she started pulling I'd get it out - she'd shape right up because she didn't want me to put it on her!

We use a Halti which is the same thing...I love it. No one could walk Ruby because she just drags you, but the Halti put a stop to that. It took awhile for her to get used to it, but she's ok with it now.

Another gentle leader fan here....altho our dog has figures out how to get the snout lock undone:rolleyes:  . He has chewed thru 2 now, and at $20 a pop I am not happy! It's the best thing we've found tho. Especially since it's notharmful. I also use it to put on him when I'm expecting someone to visit. It keeps him from jumping up on them and the door. I guess I need to buy them in bulk!

Mickey doesn't wear a collar in the house. I only put his Gentle Leader on when I'm going to take him outside, so he associates it with something he wants to do. :) Now he gets all excited as soon as I pick it up.

We use Haltis for our two 100 lb. labs. The chocolate it does not bother in the least, but the black gets all frumpy every time we put it on him.

They work great on both dogs on their walk though! :D
