Anyone Ever Sold Their China? (Dinnerware)

We've been married for 12 years, and I've never used my good china. Without question... my tastes have changed.

I'm just wondering if anyone's ever done this - and if you think it was worth the trouble.

I just received a list of prices from one of the larger "Replacement" (hint hint)companies on the Internet - and they're basically offering me $24 per place setting. Ouch! Their price to SELL that same set is $69.96.

I don't know if eBay would be a better vehicle.....

Anyway... Just looking for someone else's experiences....

Sold mine on eBay. Sold my stemware for more than it costs in the store - ?? I personally think that company is a rip-off.

Did you check the Completed Auctions at eBay for your particular china pattern to see what it's going for? Since the Replacement companies are paying you per piece, you could always try selling at both places. Or maybe trying to sell your whole set, intact, at eBay? Surely someone might want a complete set.

What's the pattern?

I have a good friend who wants to sell her Limoges, and I've photo'd it to put on Ebay. I'm waiting for just the right time to list it.

The popular patterns usually bring more than some of the ones that have gone out of style. But I'm curious about the pattern because I've been married just about as long as you and would really love to expand my china to include a second pattern. If it's just the right one, well then who knows?

I'd toyed with selling mine. My ex and I picked it out (I sold China and Crystal years ago) and it doesn't get used. Perhaps 4 pieces have been used about five or six times.

Ebay is what I'd suggest, but I'd go to a UPS store or someplace like that to pack it up really good.

I've been thinking of ebaying mine, as well. I'm just afraid of how expensive s+h will be since I would want a pack n ship to do it since it's all fragile. Why don't we register for practical stuff when we get married ?

I've used a replacement (hint, hint right back at 'cha ) company twice and had great results both times. Once I sold them flatwear and they gave me more than we paid at the time of purchase! Another time they bought a dessert set and I felt the price was very fair. Good luck which ever route you choose.

Replacements Ltd. is about 10 minutes from my house. I love to look through his showroom.

He is notorious for buying cheap and selling high. I think it would be worth it if the price is one that you can live with.

What's the pattern?

It's Lenox's "Citation Gold" It just doesn't match the decor of our house. We have NO brass or gold finishes - everything is brushed nickel, pewter, etc. That gold rim around the china just doesn't work for me anymore... Unfortunately - I have a LOT of the stuff!

I'm surprised so many people didn't ever use their china. I use mine pretty frequently, mostly around holidays or family birthdays. Any kind of dinner that I want to make special.

That is the exact pattern I am wanting to sell. Too funny. I am getting a divorce and I never used it in the 15 years I have been married. We use our Spode Christmas china for Christmas and that is the only time we use the "good" stuff. I guess I know where not to go

ETA: On top of that 24 they were offering you, you would have to pay shipping...is that correct. It would cost a lot to ship and definitely would not be worth it.

I am one of the strange ones who registered for everyday stoneware when we got married. We knew we would never use china and almost 17 years later...... we were definitely right. Corelle works great when you have boys and their sports teams to feed! Same deal at Christmas - we have 30 people here and it's very informal.

Good luck getting rid of your set - If I were in your position I would probably look to sell locally either by word of mouth or by putting an ad in the paper. I think shipping and insurance would really eat into your profits otherwise.

China....collect it, sell it, buy it, give it away...I do it all. Most retailers that happen to buy and resale don't offer enough to make it worth the aggrevation of having to box it up and ship to them. In fact, their prices are usually down right insulting! Advertising in my local newspaper has worked best for me. I've also given a few sets as gifts to close friends and relatives.
