anyone ever rent points?

I just rented points through David's yesterday so I just saw the contract.

What it says is that if the owner hoses the renter by cancelling the reservation or whatever then David's will try their best to find equal accommodations. So I'm guessing they'd pay out of pocket for you to stay at the same deluxe in a non-DVC room. As a renter going through a broker I would feel confident that the worst case scenario is you are still going to be in a Deluxe hotel.

Now, also know that the reservations have a confirmation number that can be verified at any time. I'd imagine that brokers are checking up on the confirmations regularly, and probably obsessively in the last week, to make sure the reservation still exists.

I rented points before buying into DVC to try it out and it was a very smooth and easy process.

Pros of renting: try out DVC before you buy into it (that's what we did); stay in larger rooms (1 BR) that aren't available at the non-DVC wings of the hotels; cheaper than rack rates

Negatives of renting: mousekeeping is not daily, can only stay at DVC hotels (so no Poly)

The broker really can't check up on every reservation since their name isn't on the reservation. And they don't own the points, so they can't check it as the owner. You are just trusting them to at least give you half your money back.

Unless David can give you a better answer.

It's been awhile since I"ve been on the Dis as my life has changed a lot in the last few years. I had to sell my DVC points :( but will buy again one day soon I hope :flower3:

I rented many many years ago from 2 different people on the Dis and had great experiences; I would prefer to do that again, not from David's (no offense). I can't find the rent board..am I missing it somewhere? Again, been a while since I've been back, but planning on catching up :cool1: Thanks for the help!

I think you lower the risk considerably dealing with David's or The Timeshare Store.

I think the risk of renting DVC points from a DIS member is very safe and in 10 years of reading this site, I think there have only been a couple of documented cases where there was a problem.

So, yes, the risk may be lower with a broker, but the prices will be higher and the risk may be negligible when viewed over time.

If you rent from an "Active" DIS member who has been a member for a while, I would estimate the risk as almost zero.

I've rented 4 times. There is that edge of concern and I would guess a seller has the same twinge. On the other hand I paid $10, $11 and $11.50 a point. Awesome for a cheapskate like me.

Hi. I am considering renting points for our next trip and staying at A.K.L standard villas. I am not a dvc member but it seems I could save a few hundred dollars by renting points and buying park tickets separately vs a vacation package for a similar room. Are there any catches or hidden costs here? Can anyone tell me the positives and negatives? I understand there is no housekeeping. Are there any other drawbacks to renting? It just makes me wary because I have never done it before. Also, Where do you rent from? Thanks in advance!!
I've rented two different times and both times went off without a hitch. Get yourself a contract with them and hold on for the ride it is up to them to do everything for you. Once your there you get all the perks as a member would because you rented points. You get the discounts and so on. Have fun.

We rented twice before buying in. Both times from someone here on the DIS and both times a great experience. However, when I needed to rent points out I used David because I didn't want the hassle of finding someone to rent my points.

As far as renting, also keep in mind that unless things have changed, if you want the dining plan, you will need to add it at least 48 hours before your trip and it must be paid in full at the time of adding it on. This is different than a cash reservation.

If you are not a member, you are not entitled to DVC member perks. So don't plan on getting them. You might get one or two here and there. But don't base your vacation on getting those DVC member perks.

Not completely correct. I'm not sure what discounts and member perks you are referring to but you will not get shopping discounts and you can not go up to the Top of the World Lounge at Bay Lake Towers. You also will not be able to attend mixers or other events for members. You need member cards and matching ID for these and other perks.

It's been a while, but the few times we rented points our KTTK cards listed us as DVC members. I knew at the time we weren't eligible for any perks so didn't ask for any. Even so, every once in a while we'd receive a discount if we changed something to our room. I'm guessing the switch to MBs takes away this unintentional "perk" from future renters.
