We have ranch house (from the late 40s, early 50s) and the furnace is Smack Dab in the middle of the house! 
Okay, it is in it's own "room", behind a door so we're not looking at it all the time or anything, but, all the hallways, doorways etc. conveniently (not!) skirt around this 4x4 room.
Has anyone ever had their furnace relocated? Was it a huge deal? The only reason I can think that the 2 or 3 sets of people who lived her before us didn't move it is because it would be a real pain, real expensive, or perhaps impossible!!??
Any thoughts?
