Just wondering if anyone has ever had one lamen terms a collapased lung...I had three last winter and part of my lung removed and still in a ton of pain...wondering if anyone else could share their experience with me..thanks....

DS had a fluke pneumomediastinum in 2nd grade, no known cause. It was scary, wheezing that went bad. He spent two days in the hospital on oxygen. He's in 5th grade now with no repeat occurance, no pain. He has had some asthma, plays trumpet which I thought might trigger problems, but hasn't.

What do they say is the cause of your problems? Are you asthmatic?

Jackie

I had spontaneous pneumothorax once in HS after we had run the mile in gym class. It was only a very small part of my lung and fixed itself (I guess.)

Sorry you are in so much pain.

mine was a spontanous pneumo...they do not know why it happened...
thanks for all of the info..

thanks so much I joined both groups lets see what happens now...

I had one back when I was about 20 or so, I think a strain from lifting a very heavy object. Doctor said it was a 'bleb' (like a little bubble) there from birth, that just sort of 'popped'. It did hurt a lot, but healed, slowly. My best for you.

thanks that is what mine was from muliptle blebs.....

DH had one of these back in May of 1997. He had initially gone to the doctor, with intense chest/back pain. The idiot of a doctor, without even listening to his lungs, told him he was having back spasms. He gave him a muscle relaxer and sent him on his way. 3 days later, the day that we buried my mother (it was just my dad, my sisters and I...we had her creamated and had her service earlier in the week), he called me when he was leaving work, in extreme pain, telling me it felt like someone was "sucking the air out" of him. I called the doctors again, this time got another doctor from the practice, who sent him for a chest ex-ray. We went immediately back into the office with the exrays. The doctor was totally amazed. He said DH should not be standing there...he should of been flat on his back. His left lung was TOTALLY collapsed! This doctor said that the "bleb" probably popped the day that he initially went in and was given muscle relaxers. His very physical job caused this small bleb to turn into a hole the size of your fist! He needed surgery to have the ripped section removed and a "patch" used to repair the damage. He was out of work for 6 weeks while it healed. It's been almost 9 years and he has been fine since (or, I should say, the lung has been fine...lots of medical issues since then, non lung related  )

A little off-topic then what others have mentioned. I had a pneumothorax/hemothorax after a bad skiing accident in my mid-teens. It was very traumatic (spitting up blood, lips turning blue).

Spent almost three weeks in the hospital, had surgery to repair lung damage caused by a broken rib ripping into my lungs; blood transfusions, chest tubes and on oxygen.

I have since had minor long term breathing issues. I get frequent ‘attacks’ when I cannot take a deep breath, only slow shallow breaths. This is always accompanied by severe pain in my lungs.

I hope that you feel better soon. I know how painful they can be.

What does your pulmonary specialist say?

Michele

always quiet.
wow glad to hear that Dh is ok..

Chi girl--never saw a pulmonary dr.. jsut a surgeon...

You should definetely talk to a specialist. They are the ones who will be able to discuss long-term health issues. I meet with a specialist every couple of years, get x-rays, and discuss.

chi girl,
what type of specialist did yo meet with and for how long??do you still see one>>>

My son had one collapsed lung and one partially collapsed lung at 2 1/2 months old. He had been back and forth to the ER and the ped all week long with RSV, and by the end of the week he was really really sick and was transported (WITHOUT ME!) by ambulance from the ped to the Babies and Childrens Hospital. He was hospitalized for 8 days. They told us he might be prone to asthma, and he does gasp like a carp a lot. Even while sitting still playing video games (he is just-turned 6 now). He finally explained recently that he gasps periodically because he feels like he can't breathe sometimes. Gonna get him checked out next month, bet he has mild asthma.

Sorry you are going through so much pain!

Just after the accident I went to a Pulmonologists and an orthopaedist once a month for a year. I also met with a respiratory therapist frequently. Since then, I go to a pulmonary specialist once a year or two, to just check things over. They check lung function, do x-rays and since I have scar tissue in my lungs, the doctors want to 'keep an eye on'.

Good luck.
