Anyone ever go from low-fat to low-carb?

What happens? Is there a tough transition time? Thanks!!

My program is both low-fat and low-carb...I can eat things like veggies and fruits in certain quantities, and whatever protein I eat has to be lean. I also have a friend on Atkins who tries to stick to leaner meats (her husband's a doctor, and she's a former nurse). I'm not sure whether my situation qualifies under your question, but I'm at the point now where I don't crave carbs (I can pass up a piece of cake or pizza if it's offered), and I have little desire for fatty foods.

Are you asking because you're thinking of switching from one type of a plan to another?

Not quite sure what you are asking either..since it is kind of hard to be low fat and low carb. Low fat foods/dressings etc make up for the flavor by adding a lot of sugar (carbs). Low carb diets typically have more fat..they use real butter, cream, sour cream, etc.

I have done both, separately...did ok with the low fat type diet...but would not give up my atkins eating plan for anything at all. The weight is pouring off, I have a ton of energy and I am eating great meals!

Low-Carb (Atkins) is the only way for me. I tried over and over for the low fat thing, but never had success!!
My DH, years ago did the low-no-fat thing, lost a lot of weight...lot of exercise, too. He didn't look so good. He is on Atkins with me now, has lost those last few stubborn pounds, in stubborn spots, and says when he compares the two, this is the way to go. He does not feel the highs and lows in his energy.
We both feel great on Atkins!!
Good Luck!!

I think the answer you are looking for is to the question is what happens when you transition from lo-fat to low carb, right? It is hard, because a low fat diet does depend on alot of carbs. And the Atkins info does suggest that if you do change to low carb from low fat you may have a slower than normal time of it- suggests that low fat diets can increase metabolic resistance. I attribute prior experiences w/ low fat as being why I am such a sloooow Atkions loser. It may not work that way for you, you may find that the pounds just fly off when you switch - but they may not.

I really like eating the Atkins way - but that said, I don't lose at a reasonable speed while on it. My DH has been very very happy w/ slowly losing w/ Atkins - he looks great, last year we did low fat and he looked emaciated after losing 25 lbs - not on Atkins. Also his cholesterol numbers have plummeted while on Atkins! Good reasons for us to do this.

You need to really evaluate why you might want to make the change - to have faster weight loss? It may not be worth it. Or is it a lifestyle you can live with? That's what it is for our family.

I hope this helps. Remember, this is just my opinion.

Yes, I was asking what would happen if I went from a low-fat eating plan to a low eating plan. My DH does Atkins and I do WW. We've both had good success on our respective plans. But, it's getting real tricky to come up with meals that can accommodate both of us. I was considering trying to switch over to the low carb way. But I'm still not sure it's for me. Thanks for the information.

Barb,

I think you are making the right choice - tough tho it is to come up w/meals! If you are succeeding with a plan you shouldn't mess with something else! No need to fix what ain't broke. Good luck!

Hi Barb

I did six weeks on a low calorie, low fat diet and then switched to Atkins two weeks ago. I felt horrific during induction for just over a week - I nearly gave up! I am feeling a lot better now, though I have not got to any 'I feel wonderful & full of energy' stage yet - hopefully that is to come for me! I found the change difficult, in that I was thinking - how can I be allowed to eat this much or have butter & mayo and so on - I was afraid I would not loose at all.

I 'only' lost 4lb during induction & reading others stories I had hoped for more - but I guess this is OK because it was following the pattern of loosing around 2lb a week that I had on the low fat diet.

One of the main reasons I decised to change was similar to yours - my DH has some weight to loose to nothing like how much I do - and Atkins was a way for us to eat together! During the low fat diet - I are my main meal at lunch - he had his at dinner - not fun really!!

Well hope this is some help.
Good luck with your decision,
