Anyone Ever Get Sick at Disneyworld?

Or have you had a family member get sick while there? The night before our first trip with kids, DS came down with an ear infection, and had to go to the ER at 11:00 P.M. Thankfully he recovered soon enough to enjoy our trip. Last trip DH was sick for a whole day (which I blame on that blasted Body Wars we went on the day before, and left all of us nauseous.) I could have taken the kids to one of the parks while DH layed in bed, but would have felt guilty about leaving him there ... so we spent a few hours at the pool at our resort, and I caught up on some laundry. And the first time I went to WDW with DH, the day we left I woke up with a terrible sore throat, which lasted three days, then turned into a monster head cold. It was November with gorgeous weather, minimal crowds, and I felt like that!

This is a huge fear of mine at the moment! LOL! Heading to WDW in Dec. for the first time ever!

Thanks ... We're going first week of January (cold and flu season!). I'm gonna have the family take Vitamin C the week before we go, and then pray for good health while we're there.

every trip one of our family members get sick. (and we have been numerous times)
Can't really prevent it with all the rides and touching the same handle bars as 4 million other people. (especially with small children)

one year we stayed at Disney for a week and then did the Disney cruise for a week. The kids spent the whole week of the Disney cruise sick with ear infections and high fevers. What a total bummer! We learned our lesson though and whenever we combine a Disney stay with a cruise we always do the cruise first now!

And....one year I got food poisoning so bad that I was hospitalized. Disney did everything they could to make my family as comfortable as possible. Had spent 2 weeks with Disney and only ate on site or at Disney hotels. (we did not travel off site at all) Disney did try to find the source of the illness and traced it back to Sci Fi Dine in Theatre at MGM.

I bring lots of anitbacterial wipes, hand wash, etc and get the kids to take breaks often to wash their hands.

It really isn't avoidable.

Does anyone have any suggestions that work for them??

In Jan. '99, my DS (4 1/2) got sick while down there with a fever and bronchitis......he had pneumonia two months before. We had to visit the clinic while down there. The doctors were wonderful and ASSp provided us with transportation to and from the clinic. They even left a tigger stuffed animal and note in our room the next day to make sure he was feeling better. It turned out to be a great trip all in all and the sickness really didn't ruin our trip at all!!

You mentioned food poisioning! Yikes! How awful for you!

So are you taking a chance everywhere you eat at Disney or are some places just hands down cleaner? (Can you tell I will be a first timer?)

When we went down in March, I was still a nail biter. So I caught a really horrible stomach flu. I won't go into details, but we had to stay an extra day. I was sick for 4 days when I got home. It was horrible. Now, I no longer bite my nails and take extra precautions down in WDW. i wash my hands and take hand wipes to use before meals. My lesson is learned!

The stomach flu is what I am so worried about as we are planning to go in December. We are big hand washers and purell users! Guess it can really only last a day, but we will certainly keep our hands out of our mouths! Thanks for reminding us of that.

We were there from Oct. 3 - 8 to celebrate our DD's 4th bday (10/6). The day before we left my DD and little Sister woke up with the worse cough! I started pumping them with meds and thought they'd feel better once we got there. My sister was feeling better by mid week but my daughter was getting worse (continuous high fevers). To make a long story short, the day before DD's bday at 3:30 am I was riding w/her in an ambulance heading to the emergency room! Turns out my Princess had bronchitis (sp?) I felt horrible

when my family and i went in 98, i was 12 so my brother was 17, 18? He got sick when we went to epcot i think it was. We had gone to MGM in the day and hopped a bus to epcot and he got something like the flu. He had to hop on a bus back to our hotel and me and my parents went without him but we felt SOOOO bad. When we went again in 03 we made sure he got to enjoy epcot!!!

Both my husband and I got the stomach flu in December 2002. It was the year that everyone was getting the unkown stomach ailment on the cruise ships. By our estimations, we probably picked it up from someone that caught it on the Disney cruise. We lost 3 days of our vacation that year. I started getting sick during MVMCP and we had to leave. On the upside, my husband agreed to go again this year.

I am very careful about washing my hands, but I still caught it. Guess I should carry around the antibacterial gel as well.

Yes, definitely keep your hands OUT of your mouth! It's a dangerous place in Disney World in the winter... have fun everyone! And stay healthy!!

I got food poisoning on my Disneymoon last year, because I was stupid We had eaten at Rainforest Cafe in DTD, and brought the leftovers back to the room with no frig. We both ate them the next day. i got sick, but DH didn't (I think it was the sauce on my sandwich.) SO STUPID!

I am just careful what I order (like as though I am in a foreign country)
make sure everything is cooked properly and hot when served.

I do stay away from Sci Fi now.

Unfortunately, during our last trip to WDW, I had to go to the emergency room at Celebration Hospital. Trust me, it wasn't much of a celebration. This time, I am bringing medicine with me and bug spray to prevent anything from happening. Plus, my mother-in-law, who is an RN is also coming with me, so hopefully, I will not get sick again! I have adverse reactions to mosquito bites. After a bug bites me, I get a hive where it bit me. I don't know where I got stung, but some Florida bug bit me on my right leg. It was itchy so I scratched it. I had put some antibiotic cream and covered it in a bandage, but it didn't work. While we were in Epcot two days later, I noticed that my leg had become severely infected. We called my family physician in Atlanta and he told me to go to the ER. The ER doctor advised me not to walk on the leg and to use a wheelchair. (How can I not walk around at WDW?) I am stubborn and refuse to listen to his advice. I went to the doctor a few weeks ago and asked for an antihistimine to bring with me. I am definitely bringing Zyrtec with me in my fanny pack because I refuse to go back to the ER!

We had a horrible experience at 1900 Park Fair. We went to dinner there and then 5 out of the 7 of us got food poisoning. We think we narrowed it down to the chicken wings- but considering we didn't eat out the world, it had to been something there. My mom ended up calling Disney guest services and asked if there had been any other people getting sick- they denied it and said we had the flu! I felt so bad but the 5 in my party were so SICK! My husband still to this day so that it is the sickest he ever was. I felt the worse for my niece who the next day we convienced her that she was feeling up to going to the castle for breakfast (it was her 12th birthday that day) and ended up getting sick during breakfast. It wasn't a happy thing.
Even though this was a bad experience (and we are never going back to 1900 Park Fair) I have to say that through all the trips this is the first time it happened. Just take precautions and hope that nothing happens!

In mid-Dec in '03, dd got sick in WDW. We arrived on a Friday morning, and on Sat, late morning we were in MGM at the Haunted Mansion exhibit. She said she really didn't feel too great...dizzy, nausous, just plain yucky. I felt her head and she was burning up. We went back to ASMusic and she napped for a few hours, and had some ibu. Got something to eat at the food court and brought it to the room for her. Went to bed early. The next day she was much better, so off to the parks we went. But I told her not to put her hands on the railings and stuff. By mid-afternoon she was feeling yucky again. So back to the resort we went. Slept in late on Monday and she was much better. It was really not a great trip. The last two days were fine but the first half was nasty.

Yes, a number of times my DD has gotten sick just before we left and once we all got the flu after we arrived.
For my DD...
One trip..... she came down with horrible allergic reactions that we couldn't pin point just about a week before we left. She was on 3 different meds going down there.
Twice she came down with strep just 2 days before we left. Got to the Dr. and lots of anti-biotics, as long as 24 hours passed with the meds, she was okay to go.
Last year..... we all came down with the flu. First I got a very mild case...just didn't eat and made it a slow day. The next day, DD got sick at the pool, had to call housekeeping to clean it up.... boy did I feel BAD about that.
Then by time DD was feeling better, DH came down with it. He had it the worst. He missed 2 days in the parks. But DD and I had great quality time at the parks while he rested. DH called the front desk and they sent up lots of different over-the-counter meds for him. They were great about that!

Oh yeah. I was sick last week, Oct 1-8. The week before I felt like I was fighting something and I tried to rest but I had to push myself to clean the house and pack before we left. By the time we got to Orlando on Saturday I felt awful. I felt like I was going to pass out on Sunday. It felt like a UTI, which I've had before. At 5:00 pm I went to the All Star Sports guest services to ask if there was a way I could have my doctor fax me an RX. They gave me the number of a local pharmacy that would deliver. I called the doctor, she called in the RX to the pharmacy and they delivered it and charged it to the room by the time we got back from MNSSHP at 11:00. Over the next 48 hours I felt significantly better. Then on Friday and Saturday I battled a killer sinus headache. Boy was I glad I brought a bottle of Tylenol with me. I drank lots of orange juice and water and toughed it out. I was OK but have no idea how I managed to survive such an active week. If I were at home I would have called in sick to work and pulled the covers over my head! I can't imagine having a stomach virus. That must be awful!
