Anyone ever buy used tires. I have to get two new ones for my Volkswagen, but I do NOT have the funds. Yay or nay?

I used to, many years ago when I was younger and broke, but they were like new. I would only go to a reputable place and take someone with me that can check them out before you buy them.

Get the size you need off the car and then call around. Ask if they have any take offs in your size. Take offs are tires that are removed because the owner with to different rims or had to change a tire and wanted them all to match. There is nothing wrong with used tires. Just look at them closely. No marks, no patches on the inside and the same size and you should be fine. Lastly if your tires are bad and won't pass inspection your insurance company can deny your claim if you have an accident...

How much leg work have you done to compare the cost of new vs used tires?

My wife's mini van just hit 50K in miles and needed new tires. The first quote I got (from the dealer) was over $1100 out-the-door.

One Saturday morning of calling around and I finally agreed on a quote of $468 for the 4 tires with a better tread warranty than the original quote. (ended up buying from Costco)

BTW these were Bridgestone tires, not some off brand. The key is to call around and get the true, out-the-door cost with taxes, fees, mounting, etc.

I agree with the person who wrote if you're buying used, make sure they are from somewhere reputable. I've had used tires on my car many, many times (as they are SO expensive brand new!) I actually ran over a giant screw with my husbands car the other day, and had to get a "new" tire. I had to call AAA to come change it, and the drive that came was from a local tire place, they were great! Charged me $20 for the used tire (which actually looks better than the ones still on there, haha) and then $10 to mount and balance. It was $55 at Walmart, then $8 to mount and balance. Good luck! :)

No advice on the used tires, as I have never gone that route, but I wanted to second the looking around idea for "alternate" options.

The last set of new tires we got for my SO's car we bought off of Tire Rack (I had them shipped to my office, as we get UPS delivery ever day and I didn't want to chance them just being dropped off at my house when no one was there).

The only used tires I ever bought were from my trusted mechanic, who was "parting out" a vehicle like mine with very new tires. I would never do it otherwise.
