With the threat of "second wave", I am worried that the supply chain is going to be even worse. And people are going to be even more scared!! Will there be enough toilet paper?

The thought has crossed my mind. I'm not a natural hoarder and got caught short here early on. I'm finally really well stocked up and am now using that stock. Every time I go out, I pick up a bottle of isopropyl alcohol or a container of wipes and I have way more than I ever normally would.

At some point though, the toilet paper and paper towels were taking over my house so I had to stop. But I'm starting to wonder if I shouldn't just resume picking up a smaller pack once per week so I don't have to deal with the insane stuff that might come in September.

I'm sure I'll do the wrong thing though--I always do and I can never get ahead of the doomsday preppers.

I'm not going crazy, but I am keeping well supplied. It's mostly because I don't want to have to shop too frequently. We purchased an extra 2/10ths of a beef from our local farmer (on top of our normal 1/4) because I want to make sure we have plenty of meat in our freezer. DH planted a few extra tomatoes, again for the freezer. I'm buying flour by the 25 pound bag instead of 10 pounds at a time. That's the kind of "stocking up" I'm doing.

I’m guessing a lot of people have toilet paper for the next 5 years😂. As with other supplies I think people are a lot more ready. Everyone I know has a stockpile now.

f people would have just shopped as they normally would there would have never been shortages in the first place.

i agree with respect to some products but what i foresee for the fall/winter will be shortages based on increased demand up against reduced production.

w/regard to disinfecting supplies-the head guy for clorox was on the news a month or two ago and was talking of how much they had increased production but so much of their products were being earmarked for hospitals that his hope was that, at best, if there was a flattening of the virus over the summer the demand for hospitals would decrease and they could start making normal deliveries to stores. well, no flattening in many areas and still no wipes on shelves. even if they get wipes on shelves consumer demand has increased (even non hoarders want more than the one or two packs they may have traditionally kept on hand) so i suspect we will see shortages.

on the reduced production front-we have lots of farming in ours and the adjacent state. b/c of disruptions in transport and manufacturing many farmers were forced to plow under crops (kudos to the ones who took the financial hit and still harvested but donated to food banks and offered free drive up pickup to the community :thumbsup2 ). those crops didn't get processed into many common food items so we likely won't see the vast quantities of those products on shelves that we are used to AND that people have during this pandemic turned to (potato crops were hugely impacted-they are staples in soups, hash and as a starch binder in a wealth of other products).

increased demand-people's habits have changed due to their circumstances. people who largly ate out had to turn to eating in and started preparing more of their own meals. many (as evidenced on the dis) have found they enjoy it and want to continue even when/if things 'go back to normal'. people are realizing this is'nt a one and done virus-we've got to deal with it for awhile and it's tremendously impacting their lifestyles. if k-12 schools don't reopen or do an abbreviated opening there will be people who are forced from being 2 parent working households to 1. those reduced incomes will change their financial lifestyles and likely create a greater demand for yet more home cooking.

there are allot of factors that play into shortages.

I just opened the last pack of TP we bought in March. Guess I should stock back up.

Yes there was some panic shopping, but the majority of the issues were supply chain related- there was enough of everything but way too much was in the restaurant and employment lanes instead of retail.

Its not as easy as just sending stuff made for schools/restaurants/office parks to retain stores since the products have different needs (like the one ply office toilet paper that you’d never buy for home). On the plus side they can make adjustments to the lines and products and most seem to have done that.

I'm just wondering if I'll ever see disinfectant wipes again. People are still buying all of it as soon as it hits the shelves. Don't they have enough yet?

That is literally the only product that I still cant find, online at least. You basically need to go to your favorite big box store at opening and hope they have a pallet out. As PP mentioned they focused more on medical production it seems and they aren't restocking consumer stores at required levels.

I think the hoarders of toilet paper back in March have enough for the 3rd and 4th waves of Covid!

i think some people were unfairly portrayed as hoarders in the media. the screen shots of people coming out of costco with half a dozen of the 30 roll packs of toilet paper, multipacks of wipes and the large packs of paper towels may in reality have purchased what they normally would have purchased/consumed over a 6 month period of time. it looks like an insane amount that would last the average family for years but it's what we normaly see in our region when people do a winter stock up in early fall with plans to have it last until late spring.

yes-it caused a hit to supplies on shelves but likely many of those folks will be looking to try and replenish soon along with the annual poor weather preparing folks (who are doing it earlier here b/c they are fearful of lack of supplies come fall).

I haven't received my normal subscribe and save delivery of toilet paper since early March.

this week, for the first time since february, walmart has had charmin on the shelves in our area AND available for delivery. target still won't do deliveries of it to our area (their site reads the zip code and claims it's unavailable in our region).

Really? Different distribution centers I guess. We never missed our TP subscribe and save delivery this entire time(Charmin Blue). We even skipped it this month as we have too much. They missed Viva paper towels last month but did double up for us this month. We havent received Clorox Wipes from them since mid-March.

Toilet paper and paper towels have been back on our shelves for weeks (I live near the headquarters of Kimberly Clark), but Lysol and sanitizing wipes have still been almost non-existent. I managed to grab a non-brand of disinfecting spray and almost choked at the $6+ price tag.

I was at Shoprite (very north slightly west NJ) last night and I heard the stock guys talking about low inventory again.

We were late to the party with the last TP frenzy so needed to resort to weird brands found at deli's and 7/11's. One brand was thick as pool table felt and clogged our plumbing. There's a 30pk of Scott out there with my name on it right now and I'm not feeling guilty about it. I might even buy 2 :P

Their inventory changes daily but we've been able to find a lot of out-of-stock items here at different times. We were able to get Clorox spray bleach cleaner, Scrubbing Bubbles, hand sanitizer refills, and hand soap refills when they were out everywhere else. They have all the good TP in stock right now.
