We are leaving Sunday. I have been watching the weather and it looks like a hurricane or tropical storm Danielle is starting to form. We are there until next Saturday. From the looks of it, it may hit sometime mid to late next week. Should I be worried?

You scared me because we're leaving on vacation next week -- don't need any hurricanes hitting the homestead while we're gone! So I looked up the latest on this storm. It's projected to be possibly a major hurricane ... but it's supposed to take a path completely out in the Atlantic.

I really hope you are right! Stay out in the Atlantic please :scared1:

How can anyone know where a storm, that isn't even named yet, and is still hovering near the African coast, will hit and when it will hit?

Yes, traveling at this time of year carries risks of tropical weather, but there's just no point in worrying about something now that is currently more a threat to Africa than to the western hemisphere. It could end up becoming the next Katrina or it could be a little depression that fizzles out somewhere around Bermuda. No one can know this for a long time to come.

I'd keep my plans and have fun. It's good to have some ponchos with you, just in case.

:sad2: I couldn't agree more!

Breathe :goodvibes

You are going to WDW :thumbsup2 You'll have a great time, rain or shine.

We have been to WDW in Aug/Sept nearly every year since the 1980s and we have weathered (pun intended) several tropical storms.

Fay was the worst (lingered for several days) and Ernesto was practically nothing (just 1 day of rain).

Part of travelling to Florida between May and November is dealing with the threat of hurricanes and tropical storms.

Personally I find the forecasting laughable now, it is almost like tabloid journalism! This "storm" is still off the coast of Africa and may not even develop into Danielle. :confused3

I totally agree! I leave on Monday for 1 week. Disney can handle us if a hurricane hits! I am a firm believer in "I will cross that bridge when I come to it" . If a hurricane hits, well there is nothing I can do about it but make the best out of our stay - we are in Disney after all! HTH
See you in the world!:dance3:

So what happens if a hurricane DOES hit? I'm going down on 8/25 - 9/2. What will happen? Just stay in our room, or will they send us home? TIA!

*If* (and that's a very big if) a hurricane actually reaches Disney World (which is unlikely since Kissimmee is in the middle of the state), things will go on normally until it becomes too dangerous to go out. At that point, Disney will instruct its guests to stay in their rooms for a certain length of time. For Frances, it was 24 hours (we were there). It was no big deal, we had plenty of warning, the gift shop and food court were open until right before travel was stopped, there was entertainment on the TV and Disney lifted our lockdown just as soon as they could.

Quite honestly, I wouldn't worry about it. I only advise you take at least a couple decks of cards and maybe some travel games, word searches, crossword puzzles books, or whatever will keep you happy in the VERY unlikely event you will be stuck in your room for 24 hours. And remember, it's VERY unlikely. HIGHLY unlikely.

Now THAT thread title caught my attention.

A namesake - imagine that. :lmao:

I just looked at the NOAA Hurricane Center.
THERE HAS BEEN LITTLE CHANGE WITH AN ELONGATED AREA OF LOW PRESSURE LOCATED ROUGHLY 300 MILES SOUTH-SOUTHWEST OF THE CAPE VERDE ISLANDS. ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS APPEAR FAVORABLE FOR DEVELOPMENT AND A TROPICAL DEPRESSION COULD FORM DURING THE NEXT COUPLE OF DAYS. THERE IS A MEDIUM CHANCE...40 PERCENT...OF THIS SYSTEM BECOMING A TROPICAL CYCLONE DURING THE NEXT 48 HOURS AS IT MOVES SLOWLY WESTWARD.
(Note - their capitals, not mine)

I would not worry about it at all, at least for another week or so.

This is why I like the Dis, I am in Florida and not heard a word about a storm. But I click on the Dis and there is a thread about it.;)

On Friday, the 13th of August, 2004...we arrived at the CR about 2:00. We arrived about 6 hrs. before Charley did. And arrive he did. Passed right over our heads later that evening. We were told to stay in our rooms. We were given food to take back to our rooms since all the restaurants were closed at the CR. They had closed the parks down around 3pm....needed time to prepare for the storm. There were lots of updates left on our phones. They had a ton of Disney movied playing all night. The next morning, we were told that housekeeping wouldn't do a full clean, but would leave off clean towels and soaps. The restaurants were staffed with fewer CMs and they didn't have full menus.
The CMs that were there, in the morning, had pretty much just stayed overnight. They slept on pool chaises that had been put in one of the convention halls. No CMs were allowed to leave that night since it was so bad out there..and they would never have gotten back in the morning. If they could have gotten out by 7ish, they were allowed to leave, but those without families opted to stay.

The next morning, MK was opened ontime. Epcot opened ontime, as did DHS. AK opened later due to a lot of tree damage.
Those guests at FtW campgrounds were moved and put in other resorts. That area was flooded..no HDDR for us!!

I have to say that if you can get to WDW, with a hurricane on the way, go for it. You can't ask for a better, safer place to be.

;)THanks Everyone! I knew coming on here would make me feel better. I knew there was a chance of hurricane when we booked in August. It's our first time going in August. We have went in October, December and Spring Break 2 times and never really worried about it. It's just me and DH this time without the kids so I'm not really all that worried about the weather, but want to make sure I can get back out when its time to leave so I can get back to the kids when its time :)

As others have said IF it were to happen you will in a pretty safe place, don't worry about it

We were in WDW in 08 for Hurricane Faye. It really was okay. It cooled things off, the parks were not as crowded and one night @ MK it raining a bit hard. The park was much less crowded. We had our ponchos and umbrellas and just walked on all the rides. It was great!!

Keeping our fingers crossed that it doesn't affect airflight travel too much - we are traveling in that time frame, and have had problems with storms in the past. If worst comes to worse, we'll get as far south as possible, then rent a car and drive the rest of the way down!

From a FL Res, so far it sounds like the next two tropical trouble spots they're watching will probably develop into hurricanes, but will probably curve into the Atlantic, well away from us in FL. They are tricky to predict but hope it stays that way!

Good places to watch for storm news before your trip :goodvibes:

I especially like the Crown Weather site because the owner posts the info in a easy-to-understand format, plus he has mentioned on his site that he is a Disney lover! I seem to remember reading he even got married there!
