Anyone else upset with new posting rules?

Actually glad I found this thread. We are going to have [quantity removed] extra points that we banked and will need to rent out and I was planning on using this board to do so. Hopefully I qualify and it sounds like the DIS mods are doing a good job of helping to ensure the rentees are not getting scammed.

NOTE: Quantity of points removed so as not to be considered a Points for Rent thread. Edit appears in green. - Chuck S

The only problem with that is the rentees may be moving on to other places as well.

A good friend of mine who used to be a regular rentee of other people's points tried his hardest to get points for a reservation he wanted on the R/T board and finally gave up because of the lack of points being offered to rent. He has since found the points to rent elsewhere.

The R/T board up until a couple of months ago, used to actually be Disney's best kept secret. I know many, many people who have had incredible (and affordable) Disney vacations, courtesy of the R/T thread. I'm in agreement that there should be a bar of some kind, but I know most people (if they had to pick) would rather be able to have a shot at renting points then making it so safe that there's no points left to rent.

I understand what you're saying BUT think about it this way. How can you "check" out the owner you are to rent from if you can't see a good amt of their previous posts before contacting them?
Not saying this is a foolproof method, but at least you can check out what they write etc. etc. before you decide to PM them.
No this is not good for the market but this is Disboard's way to take care of their members. Unfortunately there are of course negative effects of this rule, but overall I don't think this is a bad rule. It's not convenient for lurkers or seasonal members, but it is what it is.

WHile it may be more work for the mod's but perhaps if the mod's create a new thread for previous owners that had posted on Dis for rentals. Sort of like an Ebay set up-- where you would rate the seller.
I agree nothing is foolproof but it just a shame to see LESS DVC offers on the R/T trade which will result rentees (and owners) to other places since many many people rented from here because of DIS.

Just out of curiosity, what lead to this rule in the 1st place?? Was there rentee/owner problems?? Abuse of the site??:confused3

I believe (and someone will correct me) that they felt that the site had really just become a free place for any and all DVC owners to rent their points. From what I have read, the intent of the board was to give DIS members, who may occassionally find themselves with a few extra points a place to rent them to others.

I think the fact there has been such a decrease in activity supports that those renting had really no interest in being an active part--and by active, I mean a contributing member--on a regular basis.

Now, those that want the ability to rent have to commit to sharing their knowledge and opinions with others on a regular basis. My take is it is like any other membership--there is a fee to use the facilities--in this case, the "fee" is 2 posts per week.

That sort of a program was suggested by Pete a number of years ago, but the outcry in opposition from those using the Rent/Trade Board at that time was deafening and the idea was dropped.

Another option is being considered at this time - hopefully to be implemented in the near future.

I am one who is effected by the rule as well. I have been here for years, and for a long time was on the boards too much. I don't post as much now, however, I do log-in every day and read the DVC boards and occasionally post. I don't meet the posting requirements now and am not able to try to get the transfer I need for an upcoming stay.

I would be more in favor of the ratings system than this system.

I'm not sure if I'm for or against the new rules, I understand the reason for the change but think it hurts regular board members who visit often but don't have anything meaningful to offer on current subjects. I work construction and am out of work from mid Dec to mid April, I'm on the board every day and post when I think I can help out with something, but somedays I read everything and the responses and think anything I had to offer has already been offered, do I respond and say the same thing over again just to keep my posts up? When work starts up again I'm up at 4am out of the house by 5am, hope to get home before 7pm so I can kiss the wife eat ,walk the dogs, cut the grass, etc etc then get to bed by 9 or so, very little time for the boards. details removed pertaining to rent/trade.

I have been an active member in the past but have not been to Disney in a couple of years because of life changes.... kids in college and other travel.

In the past, we have always rented/transferred our points through this board. I felt it is a good place to find renters. However, I just don't visit often unless I have a trip planned or have just returned from Disney.... it makes me too homesick :sad2:

Are there other boards to use to rent out points?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but don't the minimum post requirements only apply to the renter? Can't anyone respond to a rental/transfer post? I understand that you may not be able to post a request, but you can respond to others.

The posting requirements apply to anyone starting a thread. Since you can't post a thread asking for points, you can only reply. Anyone can reply.

Nope, I like it. As someone who rents points, I think there is a better sense of security* if you are renting from someone who is an active member of the community.

* obviously not fail-safe.

Aren't those who enjoy reading the post also active or does posting only makes one active?

If everyone was reading and no one was posting, the result wouldn't be very rewarding for anyone.

Though I am not a Rent/Trade board Moderator, I know the posts can be anywhere on the DIS, not just the DVC boards.

They do check them for content, though. One word posts, smilie posts, etc. do not count, nor do posts that are "complaining" about the new Rent/Trade Board rules...

What would be the reason for "complaining about the new rule" do not count? Isn't it still actively contributing opinions on this board?

Going forward, we will be using this thread as the "Official" DIS thread to discuss the topic of the Rent/Trade Board changes and comments here on the DVC Boards.

We will be limiting the topic to this thread so it may be more easily monitored as it has become a "Hot Topic". Thanks everyone!

I like the rule because it does limit the number of renters and I have noticed that the price per point has slightly increased giving us more value for our points. I have been renting for years and found that the price per point has actually decreased in the last few years. Maybe this will change things.

I am just wondering how they define "evenly" I averaged 8-10 posts per month but then one month around 30. I also had one month where I just didn't use the computer much and I think I only posted 3 or 4. I know this because when I wanted to rent some points I was given the break down and told that my posts were not even enough and therefore couldn't rent even though I was over 50.

Are we supposed to count every post to be sure we are not over or under compared to previous months?

The Rent/Trade Board Mods have previously posted that just two posts per week over 6 months will be enough to be considered active. :)

I think it is a good idea to have some limit of activity to screen renters, but this is a problem I see with the new rule:
We had 15 month APs last year and took 7 trips. I was on the boards almost daily in planning my trip and sharing advice with others.
This year we went on a cruise a few months ago and have another planned soon--neither Disney--so I am spending my time on cruise critic planning for them. This could be the year I need to rent points since we are vacationing elsewhere. Actually, I do not see myself renting points, but others could no doubt be in the same situation.
I could see a lot of us not spending time on the boards when we are not going to the world (yes some of us actually do other things on vacation!) and as a result of travelling to other places, that would be the year we have points left over to rent.
Is there maybe a better measure of activity rather than just the last 6 months?
