Head and chest cold one week before the marathon:headache:. Took most of last week off and tried to run my last 8 this morning which ended up being 5, due to 3 inches of snow on the road and the heavy head. I felt lousy and it was demoralizing. So my question is, do I shut it down for now and roll the dice on 1/10 or suck it up and run my 3 miler on Monday and another short one after we arrive on 1/6? For the record, this is my first full and obviously nervous, but have run several halfs at Disney. Thanks for any helpful hints.

Everyone in my house has it.
Take the rest of the time off, if you try to push yourself through it you will make yourself worse.
Trust your training and you will be fine.

I have been almost sick for 2 weeks. After 7 days I felt better and did 4 miles. Next day went to gym and this caused me to start all over. I am resting until I leave for WDW. Better healthy and slightly undertrained than sick and trained. I have heard from everyone this is at least a 2 week sickness!

A couple of 3 mile runs is not going to make much of a difference at this time. Better to rest up and be healthy. Right now I'd think your body needs the rest more than anything.

see you soon.

I'd definitely vote for resting now. Skipping a 3 miler at this point won't make or break your training. Better to be well rested and healthy by race day.

Good luck with your first full marathon! :goodvibes

P.S. From your screen name, I'm assuming that you went to PC?

Nothing you do this late will help except staying healthy, and if you feel like a short run just to get blood going so much the better.

Just relax and feel better. You'll probably end up having a better run because your legs are getting some rest. Remember your legs are already trained, so now it's time to take care of the part above the shoulders.

You'll be okay, I've been through it and I know.

Good luck and have a lot of fun! :goodvibes :goodvibes

Yeah. I did a 5 mile runb on New Year's Day (after being outside most of the morning for work). Woke up yesterday with the sniffles and achy body.

Gonna take it easy and hope it goes away before next weekend.

I'm on my second round of antibiotics to clear up my chest congestion. I think I'm getting better, not sure.

As others have said, I'd take it easy. If you've been able to train up till now, you'll be in good shape.

I am not sick but I don't feel good! I flew home after Christmas vacation on Fri and I alway have problems with my ears equalizing but for some reason they wouldn't pop at all this time, I got the right one to pop when we landed but y left still won't go, so I can't hear in one of my ears and everytime I move my head it hurts and the I get nauseus! Then I went to put my belly bar back in (skip this part if you are squeemish!) and it wouldn't go so I pushed it and it split all the skin at the top of my belly button, so everytime I move it catches on stuff and then to top it off I woke up last night and my neck was spasming and now I can't turn it! I daren't even leave the house because I think I might fall down a pot hole!!! :rotfl: ok my whining is over now!

See you all in 5 days guys

Kirsty

DS just told me that he thinks he's working on something. Rest, rest, hydrate, rest...Get well.

I came down with something on Christmas Eve, may have had a mild sinus and ear infection, and started taking Airborne twice a day since then. I've still got some symptoms but hopefully they will be gone by the end of this week!

Get well everyone! :wizard:

I woke up this morning pretty sure I have at least a cold. At least it explains the terrible 10 mile run I had yesterday. I guess my training is over. Time to sleep, hydrate, and eat healthy! Oh, and pack!

Kirsty: I had the exact same ear problems last year before I flew to WDW for the half marathon. I was in Las Vegas for the new year and flew back on Jan 1, and had ear problems after that flight - I think it was a mild infection. No pain, but I couldn't hear and it just felt "full" if you know what I mean. I read online to take Sudafed as directed on the box until the symptoms go away. The key is to get the Sudafed with pseudoephedrine in it, though, not the type that you get off the shelf. You have to go to the pharmacist and ask for it and they will make you show ID and take down your address. This is because Sudafed is an ingredient in crystal meth production, so the drug is regulated. Anyway, it worked so well! The Sudafed dries up your sinuses (and your ear canal) and clears up the infection. It won't work for a bad ear infection, but it will work for a mild problem. If you have ear pain, you probably need antibiotics, but if it's just "clogged" try the Sudafed.

Disclaimer: I am not a doctor and get all my medical advice from Google. :rotfl2:

Isn't that the worst. You have something you have been planning and working towards for months and then you get sick just as it starts. All I can say is get some echinacea, vitamins C and D, and drink a lot of water and hopefully it will be gone. Of course it is better to do this before you get sick but that time has passed. I came down with a little cold on Friday and I am almost back to 100% today. I hope yours is also a quick one.

This has happened to me twice. First was the Disneyland marathon in 2006. I was one of the lucky ones that got the food poisoning from spinach that happened that week and spent Monday and Tuesday feeling like death. It went away and I felt better but there is no way that having food poisoning 5 days before a half didn't effect me.

The other and more frustrating was before my cycling trip to Italy in 2008. I had wanted to cycle Tuscany my whole life and finally had the chance to go. I was going with one of my friends from H.S. (Troy, some of you met him at the Nashville meet) and we were doing 3 days on our own, then 6 cycling, and then back on our own. The night before we leave I came down with a killer cold. There was just nothing I could do but make the best of it. I decided it wasn't going to ruin my trip and while it wasn't pleasant it only really effected on day in which I decided to sleep in and miss a couple hour of touring. Luckily it was gone for the first day of real cycling but it took a couple of days for my legs to really feel good on the bike. I did learn that grappa will clear sinuses better than any medication on the planet. The Italian tour guides told me it is how they clear up their sinuses and I literally touched a sip to my lips and I could breath like I was 100%.

I have no idea how this helps you other than to keep your head up, in both cases it wasn't ideal but I survived and even had a good time.

Not sick, but having early signs of a stress fracture. So may not be able to do the Goofy. Have to do what I can but be smart about the rest.

For those sick now...REST!!! Most important.

And...if you are still feeling really cruddy on race day, be careful. My first attempt at the full I had a cough and cold symptoms...and it was cold outside for race day. I tried to run through it and had to stop at mile 13. Was sick as a dog. So don't be stupid and make yourself sicker. It sucks if you can't do the race, but you have to watch your health overall. They will have the race again, if you have to bail. (and believe me, I'm probably going to be dealing with that tough decision by Saturday).
