On CNN.com:
PYONGYANG,
North Korea (CNN) -- The refusal by the United States to negotiate with North Korea over its nuclear program could lead to an "uncontrollable catastrophe," North Korea's state-run Rodong Sinmun newspaper has warned

Why NOW?

It sure seems that the United States is at the top of many "hate" lists around the world.

Denise, I see the situation in N. Korea as MUCH MORE SERIOUS than the ludicrous buildup in IRAQ. Of course, George wants his pound of ARAB flesh following 9-11, and the N. Koreans don't meet the bill. :( :( .

Hopefully, cooler heads will prevail, and they will not restart processing in their reactor. If they do, there's the potential that they could build SEVERAL nuclear bombs.......this prospect is UNACCEPTABLE for World Peace. They could literally sell them to the highest bidder.

If they are unwilling to backdown, I think that the allies would be left with little choice but to destroy the reactor. Of course, such an action could precipitate WAR:( :( :( ........

EROS, how did I know you would be the first to respond to this thread?;) I do agree with some of what you are saying but did it occur to you that Iraq could be that "highest bidder?" Although it sounds to me like North Korea is anxious to use the Nukes themselves on the "evil Americans.":(

Denise, a similiar situation presented itself in 1981 when IRAQ was about to bring a nuclear reactor on stream. The Israelis chose to bomb it into oblivion rather than let Saddam develop a nuclear capability. No WAR........just a surgical strike.

Now, the N. Korean reactor has 8,000 irradiated fuel rods. I haven't seen any analysis about the risk involved in bombing such a facility with resultant release of radiation.

So far, the White House REFUSES to talk to the N. Koreans until they allow renewed monitoring of the reactor. I feel that cutting off communication is a bad choice. We need to talk, even through third parties, rather than ramp up the risk of WAR........

And it certainly didn't help Donald Rumsfeld rattling his saber saying we can take care of North Korea and Iraq at the same time.
