they want to change the name of monkey pox since its racist its named for an animal
they should worry more about how to stop it instead of changing the name

I hardly think the monkeys will riot if the name is not changed

what a world

I heard they want to change it because it's not really from monkeys.

And yea, they can do two things at once.

Some just want to call it M-Pox.

I agree, it's ridiculous. We live in a sensitive world where everyone is offended. Some one probably identifies as a monkey so they have to change the name to not offend them. Next they will change Chicken Pox but will it still be okay to eat chicken?

I could see that, given the way "bird flu" and "swine flu" caused panic and overreactions involving both live animals and their meat. And lets not forget "mad cow disease". It would be a shame if somehow the name "monkeypox" inspired the slaughter of animals that have nothing to do with the spread of the disease among humans.

Actually Chicken Pox has been called by its proper name for awhile now.... at least 20 years since I got my varicella vaccine... varicella-zoster virus (VZV) ... I never had it as a kid, so when my children got vaccinated against varicella so did I.

Monkeys and humans are only one of many animal species that can carry the poxvirus. It is more common in rodents than primates It is endemic in certain areas of the world. Rodents can carry the disease without symptoms.
Why change? Using slang names is not good scientific practice, it is common for diseases to get real names based on science (family of virus it comes from etc.) rather that other potentially problematic reasons for a name. This makes it easier for scientific and medical communities from across the globe to use a common language, as slang or names for the same disease can vary from region to region.

This is an interesting link which discusses what species can get the monkeypox virus

Monkey has been used as a racist term for a very long time.

Soccer has a history of throwing bananas at black players as a racist insult.

Three things to keep in mind:

* The personal experience of Black people with being called monkey.
* The dehumanizing intent of using “monkey” as a slur.
* The history of our society, where the argument that Black people are less than human has been seriously advanced.

I never heard that term before. It's been years since I worried about it. I'm at the other end of the virus with concern about shingles.

This!

Op, you need a new news source.
Yes! Anyone who reads anything outside of these United States and outside of Fox etc, would know that monkeys are being killed en masse in Brazil and other countries because they are mistakenly believed to be the source of propagation of this virus. It's a major animal cruelty and maintenance of an important ecosystem issue.
