Anyone else not wearing sunscreen?

:sunny: We only wear sunscreen if we are at the pool area or go to the beach. We are very fair skinned, from Washington state and usually go for spring break in April each year. We find Disney to be plenty shaded and never have any problems. :sunny: :sunny: :sunny:

Despite the vastly increased use of sunscreens )chemical), skin cancer is increasing at 3% a year for the past 20 years. That's too fast a rise to blame on the hole in the ozone

That says to me that chemical sunscreens ain't workin'.

I think we should read more about this but my understanding is that the number of "high risk" (or bad ozone) days has gone up in the last few years by something like 25%. Bad ozone days are related to the hole inthe ozone - so would relate to the extra sun exposure we get. If sun cancer has gone up by 3% that would mean we're dealing with it pretty well - probably because we are putting on lots of extra sunscreen.

I just had to borrow one of those new spray on ones for my son at camp one day and was amazed as I drove off that my hands felt no residue at all.

Good luck and good sense will carry you far! (Hopefully!)

I can't take the greasy quality of most sunscreens due to oily, problem skin.

But the Neutrogena Dry-Touch works so well that I use it on my face. I goes on with a lotion texture but there is absolutely no greasy feel after application. I highly recommend it!

To those who think tanning is healthy - it is a reaction to the sun, showing that the sun's rays have penetrated through the epidermis, to the dermis of the skin. Tanning can cause malignant melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer. Tanning stimulates the melanocytes to produce melanin, and when this goes awry, melanoma occurs.

I have two lovely large indents on my body to show where they removed two Stage I melanomas, one on my calf, one on my back.

No tan is a "safe tan". Please be careful, especially with children.

Well, it's your choice, but for your children's sakes, please be sure you have adequate life insurance coverage. It's risky behaviour, no question.

Being Hispanic, Mediterranean or Black won't protect you, cancer is an equal-opportunity disease: (http://abcnews.go.com/Health/wireStory?id=2100496)

Base tans won't protect you at all; skin damage is cumulative, and every tan you get takes you a few damaged cells closer to cancer, while every burn you get takes you a lot of damaged cells closer to cancer. You may get lucky and never get there, but why make it any easier for that evil scourge to attack you? (Not to mention the 10 yrs all those sun-induced wrinkles add to your looks...)

Really. Shop around, find a formula that you can live with, and USE it.

no we wear sunscreen all the time we are ther, my sister is battling quite nasty skin cancer, theres no way I wont be wearing suncream

You do know that the numbers (15, 35, 45 SPF) only refer to the length of time you can be safely exposed to the sun?

The 45 does not give you better than the 15 protection, just longer.

It is a common misconception. Last year I learned more than you would ever want to know as my BF was diagnosed with malignant melanoma.

Thanks - I do actually know this, it's just over here I'm not usually out in the sun for so long, hence me wearing a higher factor in Florida :) I also cover up between 11 and 3 with long sleeves if I can.

But it's good for everyone to note, so thanks for pointing that out!

I am very fair and apply sunscreen throughout the day. I am amazed by the amount of people who don't use it, including my boyfriend.

I think that when you know someone with skin cancer it makes you think differently.

Seeing what a guy at work has gone/is still going through makes me even more willing to wear the sunscreen and cover up - it might be a little more uncomfortable/inconvenient but I don't want to take the risk :)

Ditto here. With 3 family members who have had to deal with early signs of it, I wouldn't wish that upon anyone. This includes my in-laws who grew up in the 50s when NO body wore it (did they even have it then?!)....neither of them has burn-prone skin, but they spent plenty of time in the summer sun. People tend to think that "if" anything happens, it's years away but believe me that day will come eventually.

Not taking unnecessary chances here! :sad2:

I see fried people at WDW every day. I can't help thinking how uncomfortable they must be running around in the heat and sun with a bad burn. Even though it is cloudy here, you can still get a bad burn.

Several members of my immediate family have already had skin cancer spots removed. I have several friends who have also had some. Remember, what you do in your early years may come back to haunt you as you get older!

How about the Coppertone spray on sunscreens? That's what we use and it feels pretty light IMHO. You just have to make sure that you apply enough of any sunscreen you use. For my face I use the Coppertone for face which is SPF 30, I have VERY oily skin and this one is definitely not greasy!

DH uses this. He can't stand lotions of any kind. And he can just about live with this. This year he's going to try this on his body with my avon ANEW ALTERNATIVE Intensive Age Treatment SPF 25 Day moisturizer on his face. This stuff is really light. (And he hates spraying his face) :sunny:

I do know the risks of skin cancer, and my mom had basal cell carcinoma, so I am somewhat careful. But I do not always wear it (I should, I know  ). I can't wear the oily stuff, and usually don't remember to put it on repeatedly. I usually go in the winter, so less likely to get burned anyways.

When I have kids, however, they will be covered in the stuff. :)

Lubriderm makes a lotion with SPF 15 in it. Though I prefer a higher SPF, I do like the Lubriderm because it's not greasy. :)

No offense, Mrs Mouse, but posts like this will get you flamed for 'texting' your posts rather than writing them.

Just a heads up.

When I went in March 2002 I didn't wear sunscreen. And I'm a very white redhead. I didn't burn. This summer though, at home (WNY), I've been sitting outside while working on my research and have gotten sunburn each time. Therefore, when I am going to WDW in Sept I will be wearing sunscreen.

I was at our lodge pool Sunday getting a tan and relaxing. It is my favorite weekend thing to do. By the way, I always wear at least a 15 and I have a tan. Anyway, I way lying down facing away from the family about 15 feet away and heard one of the 2 mothers scream at her mother who was about to put suntan lotion on the kids ages about 8, 6, 5, and 2. One of the mother's screamed (literally) "I don't want that stuff on my kids!" Well, grandma hollered (literally) back "You don't want them to get skin cancer! You don't want that on your conscience!" I think grandma won. I was so shocked to hear a young mother say that about her kids. Most young mothers are so overprotective of their kids (at least the ones I have run across) but this woman was a big exception to that rule.

I don't allow chemical sunscreens on my child, either. Maybe the mother objects to chemical sunscreens and uses a non-chemical sunblock (as we do). Perhaps that's what you overheard. :confused3

I never used to have an opinion on sun cream until my wife got skin cancer and she never really goes in the sun. Fortunately it was treatable and all was well in the end - BUT IT IS NOT WORTH IT USE SUN CREAM. Even if you do not get burnt your skin is still damaged. So please use it. pirate:

Not to sound ugly or anything but if you had seen this woman you would know she probably couldn't even read the words chemical sunblock let alone know what it meant. LOL. Not everyone at our lodge is white trash but some are. She didn't want anything on her children but grandmother insisted.
