Please make me feel better. Listening to our friends and family talk about all their summer/fall trips is making me sad!

DS had some medical issues and had some expensive testing in January. I had a complications from a kidney stone last month and spent some time in the hospital and had 2 surgeries, and now DH will be off work for 6 weeks due to a hernia surgery. Needless to say, any type of travel this year is out for us. We were planning on a week at the beach, but I've canceled everything.

Anyone else who was planning to travel now having to stay home?

you're not alone, OP. no vacation for us this year either. our heat pump died in january, in the midst of one of the coldest winters alabama has had in a long time. we paid half the cost and financed the rest through our power company, which we just paid off w/ our income tax refund yesterday. i am under the care of a chiropractor now for subluxations of the c-spine and l-spine and have been unable to work for a month (don't know when i'll be able to start working again), so any chance we had of a trip is gone. we were planning a trip to washington d.c. oh well, maybe next year.

DS19 joins DD20 in college this year, so barring us hitting the Powerball, all spare $ will be going for tuition/room/board.

We feel fortunate to have afforded vacations the last few years--missing a year or 2 won't be fun but will be OK.

We've been watching our pennies since DH was laid off last year. If he gets a job before summer, he probably wouldn't be able to take a week off anyway. We'll be spending a week in Lake Tahoe regardless since my parents have a cabin there and we can stay for free. DH will go if he's still not working. If he is, my mom and sister will go with the kids and me.

We aren't either. Dh was unemployed for 6 months, still just trying to get on track, that doesn't include a vacation.

You are not alone!! I can't afford it this year.I'm going to visit my mom in Md for a weekend but that is about it.

One can travel but not spend money, other than food and gas. Go to visit a realtive that you only see once in a while due to the distance. Go camping, fishing and the like. All can be done on a shoestring budget.

That's nice, but with all of our medical bills, missed work/missed paychecks and no paid vacation time off for me, there's no money for food, gas or camping. This has just not wiped out our vacation fund, but we have to tap into our emergency fund as well.

same here, OP. with me not working, the $40 per visit co-pay for the chiropractor is coming out of our savings and for the first 3-4 weeks, i was going 3 times a week. thank goodness i'm down to once per week. we're REALLY going to have to watch our money this year.

With the way our math program works at the high school and marching band, our kids have 2 days off this summer (the twins) and DS17 is working 50 hours/week this summer so no, we are not going anywhere. We do a weekend camping trip with friends from our old town every summer-Friday night-Sunday morning and we will do that, it is only $50 for the campsite for the weekend plus food but we have to eat anyway.

we bought a lot, and now have to pay for a $26000 boat slip to be put in, so no trip here...:sad2:and i am so sad...My grandfather called me this week to tell me he was too old to travel now, and he paid a time share to disney, so all we would need to pay is gas, food, and spending....I still cant go:sad1:

i'm SO sorry! that would break my heart! i hope he can get his money back, or find someone to take it off his hands!

I was out of work for a year and a half and have been here at my job now for almost a year. I think it'll be another year or two before I can be frivolous.

I don't envy those who do, I did it before and I'll do it again, and so will you. This is your time to take care of your family. Everything has a season.

Oh I know. Just having a pity party :) I just got to listen to a friend talk all about their trip they're taking to Europe and a mom at school today was asking Disney advice, so it was just a little bit of a bummer today :)

i am so upset...We have been to dis every year since 2005. i truly will miss it this year....

I hear ya! Ds told me he couldn't wait until we went to WDW this summer. Um...no! He assumed we were since we've gone just about every year! Unfortunately, the funds are going to pay for me to take summer school so I can student teach in fall. Then, since I'll be student teaching, I won't be working, so there won't be any money for a Dec. trip (although I tell everyone I will be taking contributions towards a trip as a grad. present). Tag fairy should put it up there for me, like an advertisement!:rotfl2:

Totally understand.

My 17yo son is home mumbling because ALL of his friends are in Florida this week and he isn't...

I didn't apologize. My house was flooded last September and he had to go thru two moves in 3 months. I had to pay two utilities and then my cat got very sick and eventually died. All this while learning a new job. The last thing on my mind now as I try to pick myself up is a vacation, and he had to learn that, too.

Life is hard, but we learn thru the trying times. It's how we shine thru the hard times that makes the next step feel all the more SPLENDID! :goodvibes

I'll bet that next trip will feel like heaven, huh? :thumbsup2

You chose to spend $26K on a luxury and that is why you can't go on vacation. That was you choice so why all the "being upset"?:confused3

Yes i am upset...I love to travel. It is wonderful--and there are no words to express how much i love dw. THere is no place like it on earth.

Dh and i have a small home right now, and want something a little better....We are choosing the new house over vacations right now...I love the lot, the slip and the house, but i will still miss my vacation this year...Then on top of that someone handing me everything but my spending $$, gas $$, and food $$--and i still (you are right) am choosing not to go...It does hurt...I think about being on the poly beach during wishes...THe seconds before the drop on TOT....and lord, i wish i were there now!!!

Add us to the list of no vacation this year....

The previous 5 years we have been to Disney every May and this year - we can't afford to go.

I know it is not the end of the word and we are thankful for what we have and our many blessings but there are times when I am truly sad that we won't be having a vacation - especially to disney....
:headache:
