Anyone else is paranoid of flying???

I also have Meniere's Disease and I just chew gum at take off and landing. I hate to fly but I do it just so I can be there in 2 hours. I just keep it out of my mind until I get to the airport. I do what the other posters have said and watch the flight attendants. I watch how they walk around and how at ease they are flying which helps me a little bit. I take good magazines. I tried to listen to music but that just didn't work for me because I wanted to be able to hear what's going on in the plane. I always sit in the aisle seat, too.

I do not care to fly. I think all the years of listening to my Mother say how dangerous it is to fly has finally sunk in! I am trying really hard not to say anything so my son doesn't feel like I do about flying.

I am wondering... what is dangerous about flying?

Another vote for Xanax. Holly took it the first few times we flew. Now, she doesn't need it anymore.

I do not fly, period. I flew one time in my life. I was 12 and we flew to WDW.
I have never done it again and I will never do it again.
The only way I will ever get on a plane would be if a member of my family's life depended on it.

I know all the statistics about flying being safer than driving but no one ever fell 25,000 feet from a Chevy Malibu.

Don't know of anyone falling from a commercial airline either.

I just want to try to understand where these irrational fears com from?

I've been thoughroughly researching this issue, as I do not want to board a plane in a paranoid state come December. There's a mix of factors that create irrational fears. Some people fear giving up control to someone else, others are not aware that flying is the safest way to travel. It's been great to be able to speak to people about this. I feel much better about my trip now.

I understand the giving up control issue as I hate beign a passenger in a car. But, that's usually because the person is going to slow.

Are far as flying safety, I've had many more close calls driving than flying. The thing is that when there is an airline acident it is reported everywhere, whereas not every car accident is reported, very few are at all.

I am also one of those few people who can easily sleep on a plane. I can sleep on any flight except for night flights. Don't know why that is. I dont know how many times I've slept through turbulance.

I flew 75K miles last year and about 35K this year. There is no method of travel easier and faster than flying. The only thing that comes close is train travel.

. I bought him some xanex, and plan on pumping him full of it. :cloud9: He'll be sleeping in the clouds in no time.
Is Xanex OTC?

I am terrified of flying but will be for our Dec. trip as I could not talk DH into driving to WDW from Iowa. :confused3

Luckily DH is very understanding of my fear as he was present on the last flight I took when I LOUDLY gasped "Oh My God!" when we hit a bit of turbulance. :rolleyes1

Our plan is that we are taking our portable DVD player to distract me as I am a big movie buff. The bonus is that my favorite Disney movie, The Little Mermaid, comes out tomorrow so I am not going to get to watch it until our flight. popcorn:: I believe that the POTC sequel comes out while we are at WDW so that will by my motivation on the way home.

I am still considering getting some drugs from the doc though. We will see how my nerves are as we get closer. :sad2:

We are leaving for airport in 25 minutes to head to WDW. My flying problem is that I got upgraded to FC but wife and daughter didn't.

Hoping to either weasel both of them an upgrade or get the two of them seats and I'll sit in coach.
