dh and I were talking about thanksgiving and the holidays in general this year. we decided 2 years ago that we want to stay home for holidays, it was too much with our young son, and this year with the twins added to the mix it just makes it even clearer to us that staying home is the way to go. my parents can't travel because grandma will be left alone (she won't travel), dh's mom and assorted family members usually come but this year they aren't for thanksgiving, so looks like it will be me, dh, ds2, twins 8 months. we're actually looking forward to it.

anyone else planning a small thanksgiving? what are you planning on having? all the fixings, or going smaller. dh still really wants a whole turkey, so we will get a smallish one and eat lots of leftovers. fine by us! we really seem to be planning on having all the stuff we normally would have with a crowd, just less of it.

Beanie is going to come out here and make me a full Thanksgiving feast (complete with apple pie) since she is such a grand cook. :)

Oh I can just taste it now!

Chicken farms are very smelly, it might ruin your holiday.

Yep...just 3 of us. We're going out for the first time this year.... to a casino Thanksgiving buffet :) Should be good.

I'm hoping the holidays go by very quickly for us. This is the first Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Years without DH. This will be my first Thanksgiving in 17 yrs without him. I've already decided that me and the kids are just going to get a small turkey and make our favorite fixings... not a huge spread but just the things that we like and watch the parade. DH will call and we will each talk to him and we will be thankful that through technology we don't have to be but a phone call away.

Just the two of us at home.

OOOOOHHHHHHH!!!!!!! I haven't been there in years! My mouth is watering at the thought of the place!!! I bet it will be packed for Thanksgiving!!

My DH, DD & I are going to my parents house. It will be just the 5 of us. We always do it up anyway - just on a little smaller scale. We will have the turkey & a ham, stuffing, mashed potatos, mashed turnips & carrots, pickles, olives & JELLIED cranberry sauce. Those are a given. My DD could live on cucumbers, so I know we will have those too. I am still trying to choose between making a broccoli casserole or a green bean casserole.

My DD5 just started baking with her doing most of the work ( I do the cutting with the sharp knives, & the oven & the supervising) . She is really good at it - she even cracks eggs better than me! So far she is a natural born baker, LOL! So, she will make the pumpkin pie. We will also have a lemon meringue pie & an ice cream roll.

Long story short. Years ago we all were to go to IL's for TG. They got sick on the morning of. The 5 of us had to run like bats out of hell to try & find a turkey and all the fixin's. We found more then we were hoping for and had one of the best times ever. We would have no problem having a small TG with just us. We had the most fun going to the supermarket and looking and picking up everything that goes with TG dinner. Luckily my IL's called us very, very early in the morn. so we went shopping very, very early and was able to have the whole meal on the table at a decent time. Now, years later we always bring up all the fun we had that day and I'll never forget how my dd's really, really, helped me cook/set up/clean up. It was just great.

A few years ago, we decided we weren't up for the running back and forth between two families anymore. It was always a fiasco. DH and I are the only ones in both of our families who have both sides in the same area, so we were always expected to attend both sides on the holidays.

So for Thanksgiving for us (DH, DS and I) we try to plan a trip someplace we've never been before. One year we spend Thanksgiving in the Redwood forest on the west coast, this year we will spend it in New England. We enjoy Thanksgiving so much more this way.

Yes. We are actually just going out to eat this year. :( I don't like to but DH and teenage DSs do. I love big family gatherings at our house but my side of the family is very small and DH's is too far away.

just me, the husband and the kids

It's just my DH, 2 DD, and mom. We buy the whole dinner for 30 dollars. MY younger DD doesn't like turkey.
My favorite Thanksgiving was our first trip to WDW.:)

For the last 5 or so years DH and I have done our own thing for most holidays. It's sooooooooo pleasant to not have the usual stress of having to choose where to go. We just stay home and make ourselves a small special meal...all the fixin's but less of them.

I suspect it'll be much the same this holiday season. This year TG falls right on DH's birthday as well, so there'll be a birthday candle in the pumpkin pie. :p

family dinner and if DBF gets to come in I'll slip out to the movies with him instead of leftovers

I think it will just be me, my boys and my parents. DH is unable to come home...he gets 48 hours off for Thanksgiving, but they're not allowed to fly out of el Paso.

We will do our usual Thanksgiving, just not as big of quantities I guess. Or we will, and have leftovers for days. :D

:(

Unlikely that I'll be having one. Nowhere to go. It's just me and the cats. Maybe I'll make a small turkey for the three of us. They LOVE turkey.

Cats are good! They might be all I have for Christmas. And boy do my demons love turkey...

Thanksgiving has always been a holiday just for me and DH after we got married. It's just too hard with the military to travel. I attempt to cook a turkey and all the fixings, but have yet to get it right. There's always next year!

We'll be home again this year - DH, DS10, DS4 & myself.

Last year, we played board games while the turkey and ham cooked. DH went out to get all of the sides from Boston Market so it really made doing dinner a breeze. Even though it was the 4 of us, I still set the table with holiday decorations and best tablewear. The kids were really surprised, especially with drinking their milk out of wine glasses.

I try to make holidays something special for our own family. Our extended families are not big on getting together for holidays.
