i bought some dramamine less drowsy to try in advance of our wdw trip, to see how/if it would affect me, and i was pleasantly surprised when 3, 4, even 6-7 hours later, i felt no drowsiness. however, at anywhere from 10-14 hours later, i become SO sleepy i can't keep my eyes open. the first time (a week ago), i thought it was just b/c i hadn't slept well, but it happened again yesterday. i COULD chalk it up to a bad night's sleep once again, b/c i was really sore from falling down my rain-slicked doorsteps wednesday morning, but i strongly suspect, since this is a 24 hour medication, that the drowsiness comes from the medication. has anyone else experienced this delayed reaction? i don't know what to do now...i desperately need something for motion sickness, but i don't want to be the party pooper who falls asleep in her dinner plate! should i reduce the dosage (1 pill instead of 2)? would i be better off w/ some ginger pills or scopalamine patches? any suggestions or personal experiences are welcome and appreciated! TIA! :goodvibes

Well they are designed to be "less drowsy" but they should make you drowsy at some point in time. Try taking just 1 and see how you do on that. We take Meclizine *Which is the active ingredient in Dramamine LD* on all of our cruises and I've taken some at different theme parks like Six Flags and we do eventually crash and burn on it.

As for the patch....I am admittedly against it due to the horrific side effects it had for me and some members of my family. I missed 3 days of a 7 day cruise with it because I had an allergic reaction to it. I would have prayed for motion sickness during that time. If you are thinking of the patch I'd most definitely try it out at home before you go. Also read the article listed by Transderm about the possible side effects.

As for ginger...it can help but I wouldn't rely on it solely in case it doesn't help you. The wristbands have been known to help but sadly it doesn't work for me or my dh as the plastic disk doesn't go deep enough to hit the specific point to decrease sickness.

Sadly for most people the things that help the most cause drowsiness like Benadryl, Meclizine, Antivert. They all have a great potential to cause drowsiness.

I'm thinking that 10-14 hours later, you'll be ready for sleep and you'll sleep great. Try to time it that way. I take Bonine at WDW and maybe that is why I sleep better at WDW than any other time of my life!

The bonine, which is the same as the less sleepy dramamine, knocks me (and my DH and DD) out for 24 hours. To the point that we can't hardly function. We weren't smart enough to try it out before a trip like you are and we lost a day of vacation one time. :sad2: We don't have a delayed reaction, but it's entirely possible that's how it can work with some people.

We use ginger capsules, which help a lot. At one time I was able to buy concentrated ginger, which were great, but I haven't been able to find them again. So now I buy the regular capsules and take twice as many (a couple capsules at least an hour before riding and a couple more if we start to feel sick). We also use the ginger if we are feeling sick for another reason. I don't have many problems with motion sickness, but my DH does and it really seems to help him. And the best thing is that we haven't had any side effects except a strange taste in our mouth, which I don't mind.

My DH asked the doctor about the patch and the doctor literally laughed at him and told him it's fine if a person is taking a cruise, but it shouldn't be used for going to a place like DisneyWorld and that he should just skip going on rides. :furious: Maybe my husband didn't want to skip the rides!

I use Bonine and it doesn't bother me at all. But I only use it on cruises andmaybe I don't notice I am so relaxed!!!

I would think that you should just time the meds better. Even though it's a 24 hour medication you wouldn't want to be "less drowsy" for the whole 24 hours would you?

Two dramamine is a lot. I only use 1/2 of one and am fine, never get tired. I take it in the morning though, so maybe by the time that the tiredness comes, I would be going to sleep anyway. I have tried Bonine (made me too jittery), seabands (did nothing), ginger (did nothing). Less Drowsy Dramamine is the only thing that helps me.

It's so funny to hear how different people react to different medications. I hate dramamine because it makes me feel like a zombie. Now Bonine I love. Took it the whole time we were on a cruise and I felt fine and had no motion sickness. I always take Bonine before I fly too.

Doctors will prescribe it for flying, so try that.

They also make an oral version of scopolamine now, which I think works much better than the patch. :thumbsup2

Bonine and Less Drowsy Dramamine are expensive packaged Meclizine HCL 25 mg. They both are exactly the same in formulations and in amount of medicine in the pill. Buying the "name brands" is doing nothing more than costing you more $$$$. You can usually get a bottle of Meclizine from the pharmacy without a prescription for a LOT less than a box of either Bonine or Dramamine L/D.

Regular Dramamine is just another expensive version of Benadryl. The active ingredient in Dramamine is diphenhydramine which is Benadryl. The Dramamine has 50 mg per tablet and you can take 2 benadryl and get the same amount of medicine for a LOT less too.

I posted this on the Disney Cruise Line board but I think it might be relevant here as well.

Sea Bands and Relief Bands

Sea bands are a terry cloth type band that you wear on your wrist. It has a white knob that if positioned correctly CAN put pressure on the wrist pressure point. Here is a website with a picture of a Sea Band

http://www.etravelergear.com/noqmotdiswri.html

These bands are very cheap but beware that since they rely on hitting a specific spot in your wrist it is possible that they will not work very well. They did not work well on me or my husband as our pressure point is too deep. The spot it is supposed to sit on is called the NeiGuan Pressure Point (P6) if you want to research that pressure point.

The Relief Band is a sort of watch looking contraption that actually shocks your wrist with a shocking impulse that is supposed to help with motion sickness as well. It is quite pricey and in the same sort of category as the Sea Bands where if they work I hear they work great but if they don’t work well you hopefully have another method with you. Here is a website with what these are:

http://www.reliefband.com/

We found them at a local store for about 70 dollars but ended up returning them as they didn’t work for either of us.

These two options are nice if you don’t want to take any medication but please beware that there is a chance that they will not work and make sure you have a backup method.

The Transderm Scop patch is a patch that contains scopolamine and you put it on behind your ear and wear it continually for 3 days at a time. Can have irritating side effects but, most people complain of a dry mouth. Wear the patch for a day or two prior to going on the cruise to see if you can tolerate it. It is a prescription only medication. Drug clears rapidly from the system - hence the need to wear the patch - so side effects should be resolved in 4-6 hours after removing the patch. You MUST be diligent about washing your hands after they come in contact with the patch and if you accidentally touch it and touch your eye(s) they can dilate your pupils and give you symptoms much worse than seasickness alone! These patches work well for some but have a higher rate of allergic reactions than other forms according to my pharmacist (take that for what it's worth). Their website is http://www.transdermscop.com/site2/
I would suggest that you read the side effects in the patient information section. I didn’t try this out at home before we left on our first cruise and I ended up in the cabin sick with a nasty headache, upset stomach, dizziness, dilated pupils and miserable. Turns out I am highly allergic to scopolamine and didn’t know it! I would suggest if you plan on using this you try it out at home first to make sure that you are not allergic to it. I have also heard that there is a new scopolamine product called Scopace that gives the same benefit as the patch but with fewer side effects. Ask your doctor if you want to go this way if they think it is good for you and your body.

Then there are the over the counter drugs like Dramamine, Dramamine Less Drowsy, Bonine and the active form of Bonine and Dramamine Less Drowsy which is Meclizine.

Dramamine is a dimenhydrinate and it has the ability to make you really really sleepy! I'd suggest trying these methods out at home before you go as well to see how they react especially if they make your extremely tired and if you drink how you react with alcohol. Original Dramamine can be used in small children although not under the age of 2 but can make them extremely tired and agitated. Here is their website
http://www.pfizer.com/do/counter/di..._dramamine.html

Dramamine Less Drowsy and Bonine are actually Meclizine. You can generally buy Meclizine over the counter (although some pharmacy's keep it behind the counter) but without a prescription and the Meclizine is generally cheaper. We get 100 Meclizine tablets for 8.00 where we get 12 Bonine for 8.00 so the difference is a big deal to us! Meclizine, Bonine, Dramamine Less Drowsy are all antihistamines such as Benadryl. We usually start taking this medication 2-3 days before we leave and continue to take 1 pill every morning until we have been home for at least 2 days. Our pediatrician told us we could give a 1/2 of a 12.5 mg pill to our older kids and my dd needed it but my 2 boys did not. They didn’t suffer from motion sickness at all but my 9 year old did suffer. I would also suggest trying this out at home before you go as well. Better to lose a weekend than a whole trip! Here is an online pharmacy (prices are outrageous) but it has some good information on Meclizine http://www.online-health-pharmacy.c...y_meclizine.php

Antivert - Prescription version of Meclizine - no difference in strength/ingredients - just price!

Claritin = Loratadine - Not as effective for most people - makes very few people drowsy

Any antihistamine has the potential to help with seasickness. Remember if you are already taking an antihistamine - start at the lower doses of meclizine - as there can be an additive effect

Alcohol can intensify the side effects of all of these medications!

I have to take dramamine ... otherwise, I can't even ride the darn Disney transport bus!

With that said, I find that when I'm at WDW, I usually take one at 8 am and then, around 2pm, I feel like I could use a nap. If we're at MGM, we'll head to Muppet Theatre so I can take a quick snooze!!!! After I get past the 2pm drowsy period, then I am fine. Go figure! I sleep wonderfully at night ... but we would get to bed late, so after a full day at the parks, I figure that is the cause for my exhaustion!

As for the patch ... when we were on our cruise, I decided to wear the patch over taking dramamine. Huge mistake!!!! I had double vision (when reading), dilated pupils (which caused sensitivity in the sun) and dry mouth. When I came home from the cruise, I was so sick from withdrawal! I had to take an extra 2 days off of work to recover from the patch! I will never, ever use that patch again!

thank you all! i've bought a bottle of meclizine 25 mg at sam's club (100 pills for 5.91!) i usually take the maximum dosage (2 pills per day) b/c i'm a gastric bypass patient, which means i don't absorb nutrients from food and medications as an average person would. i'm going to try one pill, and see if it works.

thanks again!
