Anyone else have kids with eczema?

3 of our 4 kids have eczema. I read on the nursery and kids club that they won't let kids stay if they have a skin rash. Have you had problems with them not letting your child stay if eczema is flared up? Should I get a note from their ped. stating they have eczema before we go on our cruise? Thanks.

As eczema is non-communicable, I don't think that they will be able to disallow your kids to go but you might want to have a doctors note on hand just in case!

I think the note from the Doctor stating that this is a non-contagious situation is a very good idea. It might also help if you had some pictures of what they look like during a flare up.

This is one of those things it might be a good idea to contact DCL about so you have all your bases covered.

My DD has excema. We have been dealing with it for ages. I've never had a problem with it and the club. But, I do try to get her 'cleared up' before we leave.

Do you have any 'magical' remedies? I've been through all the standards.... elidel, protopic, lipocream. . . . She hates the 'goopy' feel. I can only do her hands at night.

It is VERY nice DCL does not have salt water pools. I think it is another reason we sail DCL. I'd be bummed if she tried a salt water pool on another line and couldn't get in.

Careful with Elidel. There have been some fairly recent concerns about it causing lymphoma (if I recall).

My twins have been dealing with this since they were born, basically... Eczema is 'allergic dry skin' - according to our Ped, so the key is to avoid what might be triggering the allergy.

We have cut out any detergents or soaps with fragrences or dyes. We use cheer free, and that has been a great improvement over Purex Baby. We use Dove Unscented, but we might try another type of soap if we can find one.

My 9 year old has it on his legs pretty bad. He had no problems in any of the kids clubs, but he is older. The Florida weather actual made his eczema better. the rash is almost gone. For your little one, I would bring a note from the Doctor just in case.

I'm glad you asked this question. My daughter has eczema and sometimes she gets it bad! I was wondering the same thing and I think I am going to call DCL and have a doctor's note!

Thank you for all of your info. I am going to call DCL about the eczema to be safe. I would hate to get on the ship and not be able to take kids to nursery or club. We have 4 kids 5 and younger and we really need some kid free time. I will have to try cheer free. Haven't used that laundry det. yet. We started using dove bar soap for sensitive skin. It seems to work better than baby soaps we had been using.

My daughter also has eczema...and I am concerned about using Elidel! Someone suggested using Eucerin calming cream!...They said that it works better than Elidel, it is sold at most supermarkets and has no side effects!
I never thought about the fact that the children's programming may shun her!Thanks for the warning...I'll make a mental note to get a doctor's note when we cruise in Nov.!

My 10 year old DD has had eczema since she was born. (poor thing had it in a circle around her face as a baby. People would think she was so cuddly because she would bury her head in their shoulder when actually she was trying to scratch the itch.)
Anyway.......we have tried all the usual medicines with no great success. After a REALLY bad flare up on the back of her legs we went to a dermatologist (had to pay $$ - Ped. didn't think it was necessary) What a fabulous experience. The Derm put her on a mild antibiotic for 30 days to clear the excess bacteria from her skin. Everyone has bacteria on their skin, but with eczema since your skin doesn't slough off like it should you get excess bacteria. When you scratch the bacteria goes into your skin and gets infected - 'Flare-up". She also recommended Cetaphil cleanser and lotion. DD isn't thrilled with the feel of lotion, but I try to create a spa experience for her. What a difference it has made !!! We also have a small tube of medicine that we put only on the 'spot'. We do the lotion all over and then the medicine if necessary. Since we started this we have had only minor spots and that is when she is not good about using her lotion.
We also you All Free and Clear detergent and no dryer sheet fabric softener. And all clothes get rinsed twice.

Sorry for the long post, but this has been a struggle for a long time and I am so happy to have found stuff that works.

DD (9) has had excema for years. We've tried everything, all the prescription creams and lotions. What has been working for her is Zyrtec (for allergies and itching), colloidal oatmeal baths, prescription cream for the break out spots, and aquaphor all over. She feels like a greased pig but it's the only thing that's thick enough to protect her even when she swims.

I havent heard about the Elidel problems.

We have a salt water pool at home, and she takes a bath at night with an oatmeal bath additive.

She had no probs with the clubs or anything else on DCL.

wow smatterchu......my son was just told 2 nights ago that what we thought might be ring worm was eczema (sp). Eidel...I dont konw what it is but my son just came off chemo for lymphoma......thank god I saw your post or I may have used that. Sheesh....glad to see it...now will consult with doctor...

Glad to help... We used Elidel for a month or two, and it worked great, but I think we are doing better anyway now. As soon as I saw the info on Elidel, I immediately put up the tubes...

I have felt I am the only parent with this problem - it is so refreshing to hear I'm not alone and get all these tips. I will make sure to get that form from Disney just in case. All 4 of my kids have dealt with eczema, but my youngest 2 1/2 has been the worst. For him, it is really triggered by dairy and absorbic acid (tomatoes, sauce, strawberries). He has only ever had rice milk since I quit nursing him and that helps a lot. For a short time he was on soy formula and the outbreak was severe. I give him Benedryl if he is having an outbreak and stick with Hydrocortisone. I was given Elidel samples by my Ped, but I didn't think it worked, so why spend the money? The info on the lymphoma link is interesting though.

My son had it - and for us it cleared up when we got rid of the cats. It seems to have been an allergic reaction for him.
