I just think they are gross and it's a PITA to not be able to put them on until immediately before going in the water bc they don't hold pee. And why are they like pants instead of like regular diapers. They are a pain to take off when wet!

I just use one of our Bum Genius Pocket diapers. Works great! Before water it acts like a diaper and it doesn't get heavy once it's filled with pool water. (I usually use the newborn insert that came with it which holds enough pee to get us somewhere but is really light once filled) Added bonus is it goes on and off easily, changes sizes with DD and has a great leg seal. Even if you dont cloth diaper it might be worth picking up one to use as your swim diaper. :)

I hate them too but because they are expensive, ugly and do NOT work! Our local pool has now been closed twice since Memorial Day due to a kid who had on a disposable swim diaper that leaked poop into the pool. Disgusting and a massive inconvenience for all the families who had to hang for over an hour for the pool to be disinfected.

Our pool has, finally, switched over to reusable swim diapers. They work! They have wonderful leg gussets that form a tight seal and keep the poop in! While they cost about $12-$15, they are much cheaper than buying disposables in the long run. Within one month of the summer, you have made your money back. Imse Vimse makes some cute ones. http://www.cottontailbaby.com/item_55/Imse-Vimse-Swim-Diaper.htm

I am thrilled that pretty much all the pools around here now mandate reusable swim diapers. I think it will be better for everyone in the long run.

Good luck finding an alternative!

what are the shipping costs at cottontailbaby.com and how long do they usually take to get once you order? We aren't going to Disney until October but have another vacation scheduled in July.

I've only used the throwaway swim diapers a couple times, but when kidlet is done swimming, just break the sides and take them off that way.

We used the reusable ones found at Target, iPlay brand, and they were excellent!

Then again, DS could never sneak a poop past me, I could tell from his face what was about to happen (and later, I could tell when he was about to pee), so there would never have been an accident IN the pool with him. And also, I always waited until just after he had pooped to get us ready to go swim...I had no interest in testing the dipes!

Also used a FuzziBunz pocket diaper shell a few times...that worked well, too. But I liked the "bathing suit" look of the iPlay (the "speedo" style was better than the "trunk" style, the fit was ALL wrong with the trunk style!).

The one I ordered is shipping for $3 ~ there are pricier/faster options.

Definitely switch to reusable swim diapers. We used a Bummis (which I think are made by Bum Genius) for DD's swim classes this past winter and it worked great. She never pooped in it, but the fit was good so I'm sure it would've held it. It is a pain that all swim diapers don't hold pee, but I figured we were getting in the pool anyway so if she peed on me on the way from the changing room to the pool oh well.

You also won't need more than 1 or 2 unless you plan on swimming multiple times per day; you can hand wash them between wearings and they dry overnight.

I hate swim diapers too, so overpriced and they just get nasty. What is the point if they don't fit good?

DD's bathing suit has a built in diaper with tight legs but when I use a regular swim suit I use a Bumgenius or FuzziBunz diaper.

It always freaked me out that the pee went right into the pool....so gross, most people don't realize that the swim diapers are basically there to just hold in the poop. When one of the mom's in my dd's swim class got peed on walking to the pool from the locker room she freaked out, then all of the other mommies were totally grossed out having to swim in the pool with all of those babies wearing the swim diapers.

Are you saying you use a regular cloth diaper to go swimming? I use Happy Heinys and never thought to try that. I thought they'd get too full of water. What about the effects of chlorine on the dipes? Thanks!

Don't stuff the diaper. That will just cause the diaper to puff out and get heavy. Just use the diaper (preferably one that is a bit small) without stuffing the pocket.

Pick one diaper that will be the swim diaper. The chlorine will mess up the snaps and elastic over time. So, pick one older one that you can use for this function.

Happy Swimming!

<<<<remembers the days before the throw away swimmies an babies toddlers just went in the pool with pamper or what ever......kid gets out of pool sits down on concrete an the whole diaper exploded an we had silica gel balls every where.

OHHHHHH an just last week I had the pleasure of a 4 yr old gson chokin on pool water an puking at the edge of my pool mostly on railing an the foot tub......Left that mess to his mommy an auntie.

Just what taitai mentioned- We use older ones where the PUL might be starting to go a little so we get even more shelf life out of our stash :) Just use one with good elastic still. If I am transporting her in her suit and worry about her peeing in the carseat then I tuck in the newborn insert which is pretty small and even it's most saturated isnt heavy.
