Okay I know I'm probably a weirdo :rolleyes1 but......I am scared to fly!!!

We are flying to DW Dec. 3rd - 10th, my initial plans were to just drive the 18 hour drive from Texas but then I decided that flying is actually more convenient for us, and about the same amount of money as driving and it doesn't take 36 hours (roundtrip)!!! So we decided to fly.

Problem is I am little nervous......when I was a kid I lived up north and flew back to Texas to visit my mom (lived with dad) like atleast 4 times a year, no problem......then when I was 16 I had a dream that my plane crashed :sad2: ....and I was supposed to go see her the next week and refused to go on the plane!! And I have flown once since about 8 years ago only a 30 min. flight (San Antonio to Houston) and I was was scared as crap the whole flight.....My job was wanting to send us for some training in Georgia a few years back and I was actually going to refuse to go and I didn't care the consequences just because I didn't want to fly, thank God they decided to train in Houston!!

I am trying to be realistic here......Does anyone have any good advice to slap me back into reality???????

Thanks!

I hate flying! Hate hate hate it! But, living in Washington, driving to Florida (or Europe, my other favorite destination) isn't really an option. So I do fly, albeit reluctantly.

My "trick" for getting through flights without losing my mind is to keep my eye on the flight attendants. Every time there's a little bump in the sky, I immediately look for the nearest attendant. They've felt it all, and they know when there's no reason to be worried. They always look so calm and unconcerned, that it makes me feel calm (well, calm-ish). Only once have I seen an attendant look frightened during turbulence. Scared me half to death, and I was actually crying. Maybe she was new.

My other trick is: the week before flying, I pay attention to every little bump in the road and really try to feel it. I pay attention to shaky elevators. Then, when there are bumps or shakes on the plane, I can tell myself that it's no worse than when we were driving up I-5 last weekend. :)

I have to fly frequently, but I am scared to death of it! (Not of crashing, but of plummeting down while KNOWING that I'm going to.) Betwee that website and an occasional Xanax when I know it's going to be turbulent, I do fine.

These are some good ideas!! I am just so scared that the closer I get to my flight, I will start to have sleepless nights etc..... My cousin and I planned a trip to Vegas this past April (ended up cancelling) but as the date got closer and closer I could just feel the uneasiness of the flight. I was actually relieved when we cancelled (didn't tell her that though).

I am so nutso that I actually looked up the odds of a plane crash as oppsed to car crash....which are significantly lower which should make me feel better but.............well as you can see I still had to post this thread!! Anyhow thanks for the replies.

I'll be flying for the first time next month and I'm petrified. My friend is going with me and she's been on planes dozens of times and keeps reassuring me I'll be fine which I know I will but I'm still scared. I just decided to bring my cd player, coloring book because it's very calming, wordsearches, and a book to keep me occupied. I don't care if the flight is only 3 hours. I'll need as many things as I can to keep my mind off the possibility of crashing to my death.

LOL, when I was younger I loved to fly and now I dont know I guess I just don't like the whole idea of handing over control. I mean really when you are flying you are basically surrendering all control over the situation.

I always wonder the craziest stuff like what if the Pilot is suicidal? :earseek:

Also, I think about the ppl who say "It's the safest way travel" or "Your more likely to crash in a car"

Yea well, if I'm in a car at least there is the possibility for survival, in a plan your chances of surviving a crash are slim to none.

I just pop myself an ativan and watch the fliggh attendents, I too was on a plane where the attendent looked terrified, I didn't cry but I definently saw my life fly by me. wasn't quite as great as I thought either :confused3

Ahh! Can't you tell I am a huge George Carlin fan :rolleyes1

That's what works for me! Ativan is great for flying - Relaxes you, calms your nerves, and when that service cart comes around- a drink won't hurt a bit!'

Must say, I watch the flight attendents too - I thought I was creative and was the only one that did this! :confused3 ah, there's just more smart people like me in the world! :earboy2:

Must say, a prayer or two doesn't hurt either - puts me at ease
