Anyone else find it a little odd...

I typically just listen to the podcast and don’t post on the boards, but something struck me as really strange this week. Did anyone else find it weird that the on a “Disney” podcast there was no mention of pretty cool/big Disney news that came out last week? I’m talk about the “Mobile Magic” park application. If it was mentioned in passing and I missed it, I apologize and you can ignore the rest of this post.

Last year around this time it was mentioned that Disney teamed up with Verizon, and after a year of working on the project, they finally launched the first true wait time application. I thought this was a rather important / big piece of news. This application, if successful and working to its full potential, can change the way you tour a park. Did Pete and gang just leave out this information because it conflicts with their own interest? The E-Ticket app?? That would be strange, seeing as the Disney/VZ app isn’t even for iPhones. I mean, it looks like Disney has finally done something right and there wasn't a peep about it.

I highly doubt they held it back as the two applications do not serve the same platform.

I think they had been away for quite some time from each other and had other important news.

I think to suggest they hold back info because it does not profit themselves is in poor taste.

They had mentioned last month that they were sure Disney was going to release something like this soon and that is why they didn't include this feature in their own app, so I don't think it was a conflict of interest (but even if it was I wouldn't blame them for not mentioning it). Sounds like an interesting feature, but I don't have or use a cell phone, and don't plan to any time soon so really neither apply to me :)

Keep in mind that they had a lot to talk about this week, since they weren't able to do a show for two weeks. They couldn't possibly cover everything that's happened in the Disney universe in the last couple of weeks during this week's show.

I don't think it would even cross their minds to intentionally not make notice of something newsworthy.
As for me, IMHO - I haven't even heard of "Mobil Magic" - but I don't have a Verizon smartphone either.

It's so easy for news items to fall under the radar for a bit

I would hope it wouldn't be intentional. That is why i was saying i found it odd. I mean some of the things they come up with in the roundtable are very random, and sometimes pretty useless information. This is something that has been in the works for over a month and could turn out to be very useful.

You're a perfect example, I'm sure you get a lot of your Disney news from the podcast and it stinks that you didn't hear about it till now. Also, the application isn't just for smartphones...actually it isn't even out for smartphones yet. It's for the standard Verizon phones. And this is something that i could see ending up in the park as something you could rent while there.

People have been talking about this application on the boards. Many people have been trying to get it, but their phone was not compatible.

It does not surprise me that it was not mentioned on the podcast. When the collaboration was originally announced it was mentioned. No one on the podcast has a phone that will work with this application so they are unable to make any kind of review. It seems like the release is pretty much a non-story because it is available on so few phones.

Depending on where you live in the country depends on what phone is the most popular. My hometown for example does not have service for att customers therefore most people there have verizon. I do not know anyone with an Iphone actually. So you might say that the apps. for that are available for so few phones as well. It all depends on where you live and what service is available. Heck I have att and do not have an iphone. The service plan is too expensive for the Iphone. Esp. for as little as we use our cell phone. It is good that there is choice out there for all different needs.

One of the great things about being involved in this podcast is we are given the freedom to discuss whatever we want. There is no 'master plan' or meeting where we talk about what we will and won't discuss.

There are MANY issues we do not cover in any given week. There is only so much time in each show and we each get to bring up what we feel is most important that week.

If you, as a listener, feel we needed to discuss something specific on a show then send an email or record a voicemail asking us to discuss it. However, we also have the personal freedom to pick and choose which emails we want to read/voicemails we want to play.

The other side of this is that if you feel what we did talk about that week was 'pretty useless' information to you, keep in mind that it may be very useful information to someone else.

This falls in the 'you can't please all the people all the time' category.

Where did that Nintendo thing go Kevin? I actually have a DS, so I would of liked to be able to use it at Disney! *sigh*

They had a lot to talk about on this weeks show, it was an hour and 45 minutes long for Pete's sake! (oh aren't I funny with my puns! :rotfl:)

If you think it's important, email in! They are amazing, but I doubt they are mind readers. They haven't picked up on my vibrations to read my email yet. ;)

They launched a mobile site as well, which is available on everybody's phone.

It isn't that I had a question about it or wanted a review of it. I just found it interesting that something that was making the rounds across most Disney sites / blogs / boards was not mentioned.

John, I wasn't trying to criticize the way you format your show. It is your show (and you're a delicate genius), you don't need people to approve of how you decide content.

I also know you can't please all the people all the time. And while I said that some of the information is "pretty useless" it doesn't mean I'm not entertained when listening to it. There is a wide range of demographics out there, and you all do a pretty good job addressing most of them on any give show.

That being said, I simply found it interesting that something that could end up being a very big step in Disney-guest technology interaction -- knowing when and where characters are going to be, knowing what time a fast pass return is at an attraction across the park, knowing what food is around me via my GPS location -- wasn't mentioned on a Disney podcast that has no loss of technology-related contact (Disney or otherwise). I thought this was something you would all be all over, and chopping at the bit to discuss the pros, cons, and potential of it.

I don't think you were critizing the format of the show - I think you were accusing us of purposely not covering something because it may conflict with something were are doing.

I was offering a glimpse into how we look at the content we present on the show.

I must say that as I re-read your original post I am a bit insulted that you would even ask "Did Pete and gang just leave out this information because it conflicts with their own interest? The E-Ticket app??"

I won't go into a diatribe of all the things we talk about that would directly negatively impact our business given the fact that we sell Disney travel for a living.

You are certainly entitled to your opinions and questions about our show as I am entitled to taking great offense at your post and insinuations.

I also live in a town where Verizon rules. I was not saying that lots of people don't have Verizon phone, but that Verizon made the app compatible with very few of their own phones. This thread gives details of all the people who have Verizon phones that won't work with this app.

I don't think there is a vast podcast conspiracy to slight Disney/Verizon, but I wouldn't care if there was.

A lot of tempest in a pot of tea. :rolleyes1
