Hi everyone!

I just started the South Beach diet today. Is there already a thread set up for those who are following this diet?? I'd love to find others who are doing this diet so I can ask questions. :) Please let me know. Thanks! :sunny:

Yes! We did this diet a few years ago when my father was diagnosed with diabetes. It worked so well that his diabetes "went away" and even his blood pressure medicine was lowered. We have since strayed away from the diet, but are now getting back on it. I know it is alot of eggs and fish. I dont eat seafood so I am hoping to substitute that for chicken or something else. Good luck to you!

I lost 25# last year on SB, but can't bring myself to do that first stage again. I would encourage you to find a SB buddy to help you stay on track during that first two weeks. I still use many of the recipes but within the guidelines of the SparkPeople free website. Would be happy to answer any questions regarding my experiences with SB last year.

Hi and thanks for the replies :) I woke up feeling cruddy this morning, but I don't want to give up on this. I honestly don't know if how I feel is related to starting South Beach yesterday or not, but I've heard other people complain of not feeling great during the initial period.

Anyway, I'm feeling slightly better now, as I sit here sipping a cup of tea made with skim milk and SweetNLow, in my Wilderness Lodge coffee mug. :surfweb:

I guess breakfast will be eggs... I mean, what else is there to have? LOL Good thing I don't have high cholesterol. :confused3

I'll go food shopping later today and make sure to stock up on South Beach diet-compatible foods. lol

Thanks again for the replies :)

Oh by the way, I do have a question! Since the ingredients in salsa is basically tomatoes and peppers, we can have salse during Phase I, correct?? Thanks!

I understand SB is similar to Atkins--After the induction phases. I would love to hear of your journey with SB.

The success lies in making whatever changes you can to make those healthier choices and SB certainly offers that in an esy to follow way. I hope you've found a style that will work for you!

WISHing you a successful journey to making the changes that will work for you.

I'll check out that web site, thanks :) I do have a few SB "buddies" at work. Several of us started on it yesterday, and a couple of ladies at work have been doing it for a while now, so at least at work I'll have support. :)

How much weight did you lose during Phase I? I think if I know that I'll lose a good chunk, it'll keep me motivated during this time. lol

My DH has diabetes and he said he'd do it with me, so I'm hoping to get both of us healthier with this :) I have high blood pressure and I'd be THRILLED to be able to get off medication. I don't eat seafood either! I'll be doing a lot of chicken, turkey, and lean beef. Thanks for sharing your experience! :)

Thank you very much for the support, I appreciate it :)

I've gained about 70 pounds over the last 10 years (although I haven't really gained any weight for the last couple of years), and since I'm not getting any younger AND since I'm tired of being so overweight, I'm taking this opportunity to give South Beach a try. I will stick to the diet the way it's written (in other words, not "cheat") because I want to see for myself whether this will really work or not. lol I've seen some great results on a couple of the women I work with, and a few more of us at work are starting now. I'll keep you updated on my progress :)

I don't rememer exactly but it was a good chunk - maybe 8# or so? Anyhow, I didn't feel funky until days 3 and 4 but got through it with many phone calls to my SB buddy. I also embraced the 75 calories of sugar free treats and added sugar free chocolate to my afternoons. I try to avoid sugar free treats now, but they were crucial to Phase 1 as was the ricotta creme for desserts. I really liked the artichokes benedict but not on artichoke bottoms - rather a bed of sauteed spinach. SB Phase one family favorites that we have eaten today and yesterday include Gazpacho (we eat it with burgers - the family gets a bun and I use lettuce leaves) and the creamy cauliflower soup. We don't digest dairy well, so used the creamy cauliflower soup with mushrooms as "cream of mushroom" which the kids gobbled up last night. Cauliflower makes great potatoes too on Phase 1 as SB mash and can be steamed in small florettes and used in mock potato salad. I don't think I had a recipe for the mock potato salad, but you can just make your usual potato salad substituting lower fat mayo and using cauliflower for potatoes - was a big hit at a pot-luck BBQ. Good luck on Phase 1 - it is tough but worth it to "reset" your system and start your diet with a bang!pixiedust:

Well it's been a full week now and according to my strange scale (it changes every time I step on it, even just a minute later!!! :confused3 ) it looks like I've lost about 5.5 pounds :)

South Beach is each and difficult, all in one. lol Easy because there's not a lot of choices and not a lot to think about; difficult because there are not a lot of choices. lol At this point, I'm feeling great physically, and I'm going full steam ahead into Week 2. :)

Blah..... another day of chicken and string beans for lunch, low fat string cheese and sugar-free jello for snacks, and then some sort of lean meat and veggies for dinner. lol Maybe an egg and Canadian bacon this morning for breakfast. lol

I'll be bringing my scale to work today since it's Weigh-In Day (We're doing a "Biggest Loser" type of contest at work, and it started last Friday!)... curious to see how everyone else has done this week. :scratchin lol

I am trying to start again. I did it a year or so ago and lost about 15 pounds in a few weeks. I tried to start a few months ago and started a WISH Journal and then was sidelined by surgery and other problems. I am ready to commit again.

Have you seen this site: http://www.southbeach-diet-plan.com/forum/index.php ? It might also help you get the answer to questions.

On the advice of my doctor I skip Phase 1 and start with a modified Phase 2. I had severe health problems with Phase 1 when I originally started.

Thank you, I have not seen that site until now! I'll have to check it out, and join, tomorrow! :)

I'm in the middle of my second week of Phase I, and I'm actually really surprised that I don't feel any ill effects. :confused3 I wasn't a big carb person to start with, but I always had carbs, at almost every single meal. I am looking forward to adding a few back in, starting this Friday.

Sorry to hear about your complications and surgery, I hope you're feeling better now. :)

I follow the South Beach and Fat Flush diet, find combining both works great. I have lost 35 lbs in 6 months went from 225 to 185 and I am 66 years old, harder to lose the older you are. I drink a half gallon plus of tap water a day. I use a thread mill 5 to 6 days a week and walk about 2 miles at 3 miles per hour.

Throwing my hat in on the south beach diet. i have gained a lot of the weight i lost back from when i did atkins and nutrisystem. I just can't seem to do atkins again, so I am gonna try this. I am pre-diabetic, and i can tell a huge difference in how I feel when I am off carbs.

Starting tomorrow. Did my grocery shopping today. Lots of chicken breasts!

Hi Mike :wave2:

Wow 35 pounds in 6 months is great, way to go! :cheer2: I bet all of the water that you drink really helps, I do drink a lot of water each day but I know that I need to increase it. So far, I haven't started doing any additional exercise because of some medical conditions I have (rheumatoid arthritis and plantar fasciitis), however at work I walk a lot, so at least I'm not sedentary. :tiptoe:

Hi Linda :wave2:

I just had my second weigh-in today (we're having a weight loss contest at work! LOL), and in my first two weeks on South Beach I've lost a total of 9.5 pounds. That was Phase I, which is the strictest phase, so I'm not surprised that I lost that much. As of today I start Phase II but so far all I've had that was different from Phase I was a whole wheat English muffin. lol

What is the biggest difference between Atkins and South Beach? I've never tried Atkins at all. In fact, I haven't dieted at all in years. I was definitely ready to start this. lol

My DH is diabetic and he's doing the diet with me, so it'll be great for him. He did great on the first week with me, but this past week he's been on a business trip and didn't do very well sticking to Phase I, so he has asked me if I'd do another week of Phase I with him, and I told him I would. Maybe for lunch I'll just add in some fruit or something, but it definitely can't hurt me to do another week of Phase I.

It sounds like you're ready for a great start tomorrow, having gone food shopping today. That's really been the key for me, to make sure that I have the appropriate foods available.

My favorite thing about South Beach is that there's no measuring, weighing, counting, etc. There are foods you can eat, there are foods you can't eat. Simple. lol

If you want, I can tell you what my meals have been comprised of. I don't really do recipes well (I just can't be bothered. lol), so I basically have been making up my own (within the parameters of the diet) and it's been working well so far. :)

Just saw you mention your PF. I thought I recognized your siggy. Didn't you just go and have a cortisone shot for it recently? How is it doing?

Good memory! Yes it was me who had the thread about PF. LOL Actually, just a week and a half ago I had a SECOND cortisone injection in my heel. I totally was not expecting the doctor to say/offer the shot, so soon after the initial one. But I told him that the first shot seemed to be working for a week, until I went to WDW, and I ended up in a wheelchair on the second day of my vacation :( So he said "Ok, we should do another injection". I said "NOW?! I'm not mentally prepared! I don't have my DH's hand to hold...." :scared: He chuckled and asked if I wanted to come back for the shot. Then I realized how I thought that first injection really didn't hurt and opted to get the second injection right then and there. That one didn't really hurt at all either, I'm happy to say. So it's been about 10 days since the second injection and it's feeling better each day. So.... we'll see what happens now. I do trust this doctor and I trust his decision to give me the second injection. I did ask him, and he did explain, that in many situations it's not at all unusual or detrimental to get a second injection soon after the first.

So I have been working, and I'm on my feet a LOT during work, but otherwise trying to take it easy, in order to allow the cortisone to do what it's supposed to do, and that's why I have not started any sort of exercise program. So far, so good. :)

Thanks for asking :)
