Anyone else anti-tatoo?

I was reading other threads about getting a tatoo and it made me think. I think for the first time I'm admitting that I am judgemental when it comes to people covered in tatoos. I'm not talking about having 1 or 2 that are discreet.

I know so many people who have tatoos (my hubby being one of them...he has ONE), but when I see people who are covered in tatoos I instantly think "ick". WHY? :confused3

I have NEVER looked at any tatoo and thought "oh how cool!" I instantly think "stupid move". God knows I would never say that because they are very sentimental tatoos sometimes, but even when my husband got his I told him I didn't care for it. He loves his tatoo and although a part of me likes the "bad boy" image :lovestruc I still don't love it by any stretch of the word.

I just associate tatoos with a negative connotation.:confused3

I think it's because my dad always drilled into my head..."would you put a bumper sticker on a Bentley? NO!" He told me over and over "first impressions will make or break life's opportunities...don't do something to compromise that."

Anyone else instantly turned off by tatoos? Do you feel slightly superior to someone who has them?

I KNOW I am not better/superior but I just look down on people (and dare I say it...especially women who are covered), and frankly I'm embarrassed.

For me? Yes. For others? I think that they make others less attractive and it could cost them a job opportunity, but it is none of my business what they do with their bodies. I certainly don't think they are any less (anything) than me for choosing to get tattoos or piercings. If anything, maybe I am less open minded than them for refusing. :confused3

I am on the other side. I love tattoo's, especially if they are good work and CAN be covered if needed. DH has 9, all can be covered by a shirt, and I have 4 which can be covered by clothing also. There are alot of beautiful tattoos out there. I think it used to be seen as only a certain class of people had them, but now its more accepted.

I met a couple at our BLT presentation when we were in Disney and the lady had an awesome ankle band with Mickey and a tribal type design. I would LOVE to have one of those.

ETA...While I have to agree I do not like the ALL OVER tattoo's. DH and I have always stressed to DD, if you get a tattoo, make sure it can be covered. (Not that we have to worry about that anytime soon she is only 10)

I have six. :rotfl2:

If I'm wearing pants and three quarter sleeves, you wouldn't know I had any.

I do get stopped constantly from people on the street who tell me that one of my visible tattoos is cool.

All of mine are sentimental/personal, no "flash". As to why, it's not any different to me than putting holes in your ears, except tattoos say more about me than any earrings could.

I am not a fan of tatoos either. They do nothing for me. I just don't find them attractive at all - on men or women. Just not my thing.

I always think, "Imagine what that thing will look like when that person is in their 80's" :scared1:

Many people like them, but I don't.

I take it you disapprove of my thread where I thought my sons tattoo was cool. Well it has a lot of meaning to him, it wasn't some quick whim to have it done. It's also in a place that can easily be covered by a shirt.

But, everyone has an opinion and that's cool with me.

I love that quote :lmao:.

T see tattoos so often they just don't bother me any more and I honestly don't think they stand in the way of any opportunities. It has become the norm for people in their 20's and 30's to have tattoos.

roomthreeseventeen - if you don't mind sharing, what's the song, or do the notes spell out something?

It's a song my friend and sometimes writing partner, Steve Schalchlin wrote, for an off-Broadway show called The Big Voice: God or Merman?. The song is called "Why?", and the bridge goes (the bold part is what my tattoo is)

If God has hands, they're your hands
If God has eyes, they're your eyes
And if God is love, it's your love.

Actually, I don't disapprove, I wish I could be more like you! I wish I could look at a tatoo and honestly think "HOW AWESOME!". I think maybe it's because I have so many friends that regret their tatoos now, that I just always wonder whether what they are permanently putting on their bodies today will be as important to that person 50 years from now.

For an example...I will admit sometimes I see these guys with the tribal tatoos around their arms and think "ok...kinda hot"...but then I instantly think..."not gonna be hot when he's 70". LOL :rotfl2: I don't know...I'm clearly too damn uptight!:rotfl:

I dont like them and dont have any.....

However, it's not my (or my kids) body so it's not my place to tell anyone else that they shouldn't have them.

Yup, same here. They may be cute and trendy when you're 21...not so cute when you're 81.

I don't like them. I don't think it is as big of a deal if you can hide them if you want or need to. I see all these really young people getting them and I wonder if they are going to wish they didn't have them later in life.

DH has one on the upper part of his arm that predates our relationship.

This is why I don't have an issue with them. I truly believe that in 50 years from now he will like it just as much as he does now.
Now if it was something stupid then I wouldn't be thrilled. But like I said, he's honoring his roots and his brother.

Yup, I believe I'll still love mine in 50 years. Mine memorialize my birth sign, the first time I sang at Carnegie Hall, my first songwriting collaborator, my profession, and my first love.

Nice. :goodvibes

This makes me believe I'll someday find/think of the right design for me.

I am not anti-tattoo. Seriously, if you like it, go ahead and do it. It's your body. Go ahead and do what you like to it.

That being said, I personally do not like the way they look and would never have one myself. I also wonder "what will it look like at 70?"

I dislike tattoos, as well. I think they look trashy, and I guess because I haven't evolved since 30 years ago when the only people I knew who had them were VERY different from me. I know they are very mainstream now, and I know people of all walks of life have them, and I know they're sentimental and in honor of many things. I even think they're hot every once in a great while, but mostly when I see a tattoo, I think, "Ewww."

***Edited to add*** when I want to memorialize something, I make a scrapbook page about it.
