FLY!

I have to fly August 14th to my friend's wedding in Michigan and I am freaking out! I haven't been able to sleep very well for several days. I'm too much of a control freak. If I could know how to fly the plane myself I would feel better, except my dad was an aerospace engineer and he always liked to share stories of mechanical mishaps with us. (See parents- your kids can always think of some deep seeded problem to blame you for.)

I need some pixie dust and a xanax.

I've never flown. It's not so much as a fear of flying as a fear of heights that's kept me from flying.:o

Good luck. ~pd~

I think you should force your dad to go with you and hold your hand on the flight.;)

Yup, I feel your pain. I am flying to Cancun this Wednesday and I dread the thought of it. I absolutely hate take off and any sign of turbulence and I am just about ready to lose my mind. It is an awful fear but good for you for not letting your fear get in the way of having fun!

By the way, it is probably not the most emotionally healthy thing in the world, but I find that a nice healthy dose of Xanax helps me to at least give an outward appearance of sanity on flights.

Personally, I don't think there is reason to freak out and get all worked up like that.

Take a xanax. That is what I do!;) Have a good, safe trip.

I hate to fly and haven't since 1998. DH & I are flying to Disney on December 28th to celebrate, and I've been dreading it since we scheduled the trip. I've already told DH that we're getting to the airport extra early so I can relax with a couple of margaritas. :teeth:

Hope you have a wonderful trip! Good luck!

I have not flown in about 10 years, but I deperately want to visit a friend who lives in Vegas. I live in NJ, which means it would be a LONG flight! I been trying to book airfare for a month but haven't yet, since I just start freaking out and getting anxiety at the thought of flying. It's really starting to wreck my health! I feel queasy, with a gloomy constant feeling of dread that won't quit. :( :( :( I really wish I had enough money and time to take Amtrak, as I really think I can't handle flying. I would be flying alone, so drugs are out of the question since I need to be alert. :(

Good thing is, I can drive to WDW, so that is not affected by my fear of flying! :teeth:

I fly from Incheon International to JFK every three months and it can be very stressful!

First of all it is a 14 hour flight. Sometimes you can see the screen for a movie and sometimes you can't. Then there are 2 of those wonderful airline meals. ICK! (My last flight from JFK, I brought a really good deli sandwich and ate it in place of one of the meals.)
Then there are always the wonderful passengers who manage to sleep all14 hours. Not that that's bad, but I always get the guy next to me who snores!

But fears of the aircraft having mechanical problems never bother me. I worked on and flew in Navy aircraft for 20 years and only lost 2. (Fortumately I wasn't in either one and the pilots in each aircraft that did crash ejected safely.)

::yes:: ::yes:: :Pinkbounc :bounce:

I dont like flying either. We were going to WDW on a Sunday and the Friday before I had a panic attack at home. I couldnt believe it was hitting me already...usualy Im on the plane when I get panicky.
But I did ok on the plane. It was just taking off and those little bumps here and there that get to me. I dont know what airline you are flying but we flew Song. I found having the tvs at each seat really helped me a lot. I put on some Disney tunes and played the music trivia game. There were even times I forgot I was on a plane. I think those are the best things for someone afraid to fly.

Best of luck to you, pixie dust on the way!!!

I am what they call a nervous flyer. I get al ittle anxious during some parts of the flight such as take off and when they tilt and there are bumps.
I fly A LOT during the year because I have to fly to and from school and it is 2 flights just for one way. I have yet to get used to it.

I used to be so scared of flying. Here are some things that have helped me.

http://www.fearofflying.com/

This is a great site. Also, it always makes me feel better to know someone is tracking my flight, so before you go, make sure you find someone who'll promise to track your flight, even if it is us on the DIS or people from the site I listed there. It helps. :)

Pay close attention to children on your flight. There is something very comforting about watching little kids on planes. They rarely act scared and that really helps too.

Xanax works pretty well but check with your doctor. It can make you very sleepy. Does not mix well with liquor so if you are planning on having a few drinks to relax, keep that in mind.

Drinking a glass or two of wine right before you board can help a little bit, but one thing to keep in mind, that the more you drink, the more you will have to visit the planes restroom. Sounds in the restroom can be louder than in other parts of the plane and many people consider the restroom to be the scariest part.

Try to avoid sitting right by the wing. Seeing the way the flaps move can be kind of freaky, even though deep down we know it's supposed to work that way.

YOU DO have control, over certain things. I am a control freak myself, and I hate not being in control of "driving". But remember, you make a lot of choices when you fly. You choose a GOOD airline, you meet the pilots/flight crew before you go on (usually, at least last time I flew I did). You see the other passengers. You can choose to get off the plane before it takes off if anyone of these people ; crew or passengers strikes you as very sketchy. I always scan over the other passengers and tell myself, if someone really worries me that much, that I can always book another flight instead. I never get off the plane but knowing I can helps.

Ask to watch your checked luggage be scanned (depending on what airport you are at. I know at Logan and Orlando you can watch). Watching the baggage screeners made me feel better because I saw a lot of other luggage being screened and saw what a thorough job they do.

Read the fear of flying SOAR site. It explains a lot of what the noises are, and how the plane works. Some things I took from the site that stuck in my mind :

Planes were designed to fly. Pilots were trained to fly. Passenger jets usually do not require much in the way of fancy flying but if for some reason the pilot had to, planes can be manuevered in many ways, very gracefully.

If one part of the plane breaks (like a gage or an engine) there are backups. The odds of all of the backups breaking down are slim to none.

Remember for every "down" bump you feel during turbulence, there is also an "up" bump bringing you back to where you were. It's just like the plane is a car driving over a bumpy road. You just don't feel the up bumps.

Security is a lot tighter now than it was on 9/11. ALOT tighter.

And most of all, let a flight attendant know you are nervous about flying. They are usually great about just making sure you are okay and you get all the attention you need.

Bring things to keep you occupied. I have found that the best thing is to bring a travel book, of my destination. :)

Have a great trip!!! :)

I LOVE to fly, and seriously, for those of you who say you have fear or as some of my relatives say "you'll never get me on a plane", could you tell me exactly what it is that frightens you so much? Just curious....I know we all fear certain things, just wondering what it is about flying for some of you.

I find it no more of a risk than getting into your car and dashing around fighting traffic on a busy day..perhaps more of a possibility of getting in an auto accident than in a plane...just when a plane accident happens, it is big news cause of the amount of people involved at one time.

lightningcoach,

I suggest you call your Dr. and ask for a mild prescription for anxiety. I am a very frequent flyer duing the summer. So far I have done 6 round trips and I have 2 more to go. I just flew home on Sunday from TN and I am leaving for Denver, CO on Wednesday. There are times that even *I* need the little "pill" so don't be afraid to discuss it with your dr. Maybe knowing you will have the option of the pill NOW will relieve some of the anxiety you are starting to feel. Flying IS the safest way to get from point A to Point B!

Focus on the wedding and plan on having a great time! Are you flying into Detroit Metro Airport on NWA? If you are, the new terminal is gorgeous!

Have a wonderful time in MY home state, MIchigan!

I'm afraid of heights and I can't do most rollercoasters, but I love to fly. My DFi and I live in different cities, so it's either a <2 hour flight, or a 14 hour drive if we want to see each other. When you're just doing a long weekend, that 14 hours there, and then another 14 back, sure takes a bite out of your time together!

I always sit in an aisle seat. For one thing it's easier to get to the bathroom if you don't have to climb over 2 people.

I like to lean back and close my eyes during takeoff. I love the feel of the acceleration, and somehow it just seems soothing with my eyes closed.

I always sit as close the back of the plane as possible. Yeah I know it's noisier, but I like it there for a few reasons. One is because I'm closer to a bathroom that way. Another is because (this is a little convoluted but...) I like to put my carryon bag in the overhead compartment. I've noticed that there are a number of people who - despite sitting toward the back - stop around halfway and put their carryons THERE and then continue to their seats. I guess this is so they're easy to identify getting off, as all the others around them would be gone. But to me it's just plain rude, and I hate it when I get to my seat and there's no room for my carryon. So I sit at the back, I'm usually one of the first "regular" people on the aircraft, and I get to put my carryon above my seat.

On one of my last flights there were some business people sitting in various points around me, and one said to the other "I like sitting at the back of the plane, because no plane has ever backed into a mountain."

BTW I usually only travel with carryon luggage (even for up to a week) so I'm very paranoid about where it goes and I don't like to have it too far away from me.

My mother, OTOH, is a very nervous flyer. Whenever we fly together (and she won't fly without me) I'm stuck in the middle seat and she squeezes my hand so hard during takeoff/landing that sometimes I think I'm going to have permanent bruising from it.

I dread flying not because of fear, but because it's a pain in the neck. The seats aren't very comfortable, and it seems like you wait to get through security, wait to get on the plane, wait for the plane to take off, when you land you wait to get off the plane, then you wait for your luggage. I guess I have a "wait" problem;)

yeah, that is the downfall, you are correct! it sure beats trying to drive 2000 miles on a limited vacation time though....

I take xanax when I fly. It works wonders.

get to the airport early or in plenty of time so that if there happen to be long lines at check in our security you don't add to the panic feelings. Just plan to have time for a simple relaxing breakfast/lunch/dinner/snack something after going through security.

I used to be a nervous flyer and found sitting by the window and watching actually helped. Even now, (I fly once or twice a week) on the rare occassion we're taking off/landing in rough weather, I much prefer if I can see out the window, it feels much less bouncy if you can see what's going on.
