I'm not sure how to describe it, but DDIL doesn't speak English, she and her whole family are from Mexico. Her father speaks a little English. When she's here, DS translates since fortunately he's bilingual. When they got married, it was in Mexico, all in Spanish, and DH and I understood virtually nothing (it was interesting, though, as lots of their marriage customs are different from what we're used to). When DDIL comes, she and I can't really talk and build any kind of relationship. Anyone else enduring this situation? It's all a little frustrating, but I suppose I should look at the good part-at least we don't fight this way!

I'm in pretty much the same situation as you are in but i'm the DDIL that doesn't speak Spanish!:lmao: My dh was born in the states and raised in Mexico. He is the only one in his family that is bilingual (ie: the only one that speaks English).

We go to his mothers house once or twice a week to see her and eat her great food!! I don't speak spanish and don't care to learn either. I think we have a very good relationship.

We disagree about a lot of things and I'm am so glad that I don't have to listen to her rant about all my wrongs. I'm also glad she can't understand me either.

This barrier keeps us liking each other. When people ask me if I get along with my MIL all I have to say is, I have the greatest relationship with my MIL. She doesn't speak English and I don't speak Spainish!

It doesn't surprise me that the first response was from someone else in our geographical area. Welcome! DH works in Brownsville by the airport.

After I read your post I thought this has got to be someone from around here too! Sure enough your just about 15 miles from where I live!. Dh is a BP in Brownsville!

Dh has a friend that moved down her and ended up going to equador for two weeks and found a wife while down there. His family is in the same situation as your. I think its very common down here!

It sounds to me like a great opportunity to take a basic Spanish class and then try the language out on a native speaker. It would also be a sweet gesture!

My DH family speaks Arabic. I have no clue what they are saying. My MIL and I get along great, though!
