Anyone driven I-5 to/from Anaheim lately?

I'm so glad you mentioned this sassy*girl! Someone else recommended this route to me, but I couldn't really remember what they said. Could you tell me where 210 meets 91 please? I was trying to map it out and don't see a direct connection between the two. Is there another highway you take from 210 to get to 91. Thanks so much for your help!! DD and I are headed down from Sac on Sunday. Can't wait!!!

Oh I'm so sorry I forgot to list a important step.. I just have a print out of a google directions that this person posted. I printed these back in the summer of 2009 I was going by myself with just my kids so I was scared to death of that traffic on I-5 once you get over the grapevine.

I-210 E then I-605 S then you get on the CA-91 E then on I-5 for about 5 miles. It is really a easy drive and well worth the extra miles for us. We have driven this route about 5 times now and have never hit any traffic.

Interesting! So you actually cross I-5 between Downey and Norwalk but stay on 605 until you hit 91E? It is 20 miles farther but doesn't add more than 14 minutes to my google maps time, and may actually save me a lot more! Is there a certain time of day when you hit these freeways?

We just got back on monday from a 13 day disneyland trip. I think we probably hit the 210 around noon and just normal traffic some areas very light. On monday on the way back we left the hotel around 11am and pretty much the same normal traffic.

Now on saturday the 11th we had to head to hollywood for a friends fashion show. I know we started out on I-5 north around 10 am it was stop and go and it just kept getting worse. We first dropped my sister and kids off at the Grove. Then me and my niece headed to Lankershim Blvd, North Hollywood that drive was just awful. I can't imagine the traffic in that area on a week day.

Nothing like your gps losing signal and you end up by the hollywood bowl in the middle of a playboy jazz festival. People walking down the middle of the cars that are stuck in dead stop traffic trying to sale you t-shirts. LOL!!

Awesome! Thank you for the directions. Everytime I've have come in on 5 there has been major congestion. Christmas was the worst! I'm glad to have an alternative. I also think it would be worth an extra 15 min. going this way. Thanks again!!

I wouldn't care if it took a extra hour I would do it to avoid that traffic. I drive to the bay area all the time and don't mind that traffic. The I-5 traffic in the LA area just seems so much worse to me.

There were signs for future expected delays thru the LA area on Highway for the July 16th - July 18th time period as well.
Avoid driving in LA during that time, might be a good time to be in the Park :thumbsup2

Highway 405 will be closed for the weekend, which will create a traffic nightmare :scared1:

Is 405 closed THIS weekend :scared1:?!!!?? Or are you referring to July?

It was on my list of alternative routes for this coming week, and I might be wanting to use it on Wednesday next week from San Diego to I-5 North....

1 hour to go five miles? How awesome would that be? Living in So. Cal., I can tell you, do not get on the freeways during rush hour or you will honestly be wanting to be able to go 5 miles in one hour.

As for the 405, it will be closed July 16th & 17th from the 10 to the 110, we are planning to get out of town for that one ourselves, traffic will be a complete mess in the entire LA area that weekend, with everyone trying to find alternates for a very busy section of freeway. I strongly recommend avoiding the entire area that weekend.

I'm very interested in this as well, since we're driving there on Saturday.

We are leaving Saturday as well! Have a very safe trip and maybe we'll see you on the road. We have a disney family on the back of our van. Honk if you see us!

Well, leaving in the morning sometime...two kids to deal with by myself. I'll try and report back tomorrow night once we are settled about any traffic nightmares I encounter, if I can stand typing with one finger on the iPad.

Yep, I saw those flashing signs last weekend and thought what a nightmare. It's bad enough when its open.

Sounds like it just depends on what time you hit the lane closure. I was on i5 this past weekened Fri (south) and Sun (north) and it was NOT good. The lane closure at button willow southbound added 1hour 15min to our trip on Friday evening at 5:30. There were two sections in a 10 mile stretch that went down to 1 lane. The back up to get to that portion was stop & go. At this same time there was no back up going northbound. So we decided to come back north on i5 on Sunday.
The delay on Sunday was only about 20min, for the section that had the lane closure. The rest of i5 was EXTREMLY congested, which added another hour and a half to our trip:scared1: (We were guessing it was from all the graduation travel.) We never drove over 55mph after passing button willow going northbound.
Having said all this, our family is taking our DL trip this weekend and we are going to take i5 on Sunday, just leaving EARLY. We figured it would still be betterr than 101, and won't go out of my way to take 99.
I'll let you know how that goes next week:rolleyes1

The 405 closure is NOT this weekend. It is in JULY. So if you're going the weekend of the July 16-17, take out a map and/or extend your vacation:goodvibes

I am driving down to DL on Saturday the 16th of July. i don't have a choice as to the day. Will there really be a good 'alternative' route to I-5 if I-5 is already and 'alternative route' to the closed 405 highway? I'll just have to stick it out and hope for carpool lanes, I guess...

How much traffic does LA normally have on Saturdays around 1 pm anyhow?

Is all the congestion for the weekend of July 16th going to be north of Anaheim? We'll be driving from Anaheim to San Diego on Friday the 15th. Should we expect craziness? Also, can you take the PCH highway from Anaheim to SD? We thought that would be a pretty drive.

Okay, now I am nervous. We've never been out to CA and will be traveling to Disneyland on the 14th and 15th from Newport Beach where we will be staying. Any idea at all what time we should plan on leaving Newport to get to Anaheim by 8:15am?

Why risk being gridlocked on 5? Take a route toward the east.
210 to 605 is carpool most of the way :thumbsup2
210 makes a turn in Pasadena, which can be confusing (check it out on the map).

Another route is 210 to 57.

What time would everyone suggest leaving Anaheim on a regular summer Friday afternoon to return to the Bay Area? We always like to go into the Parks for "one last ride". I can't remember the last time we left there on a Friday. I think we were just planning to leave the area by one or two. Don't really want to leave earlier, but we can.

We've stayed in Newport in the past and the drive was only about 15min. No traffic in the carpool lane. Easy drive.

Really? That is awesome. I just have no idea what to expect because I can't wrap my mind around what the freeway system is like out west. I am accustomed to the NJ turnpike/Garden State Parkway... and I think that might be a bit different. :)

Thanks so much! :goodvibes
